Many people think the donut bokeh is a downside to mirror lenses, but the above photos show what a nice effect you can get with one.

Was that taken with the close focus 28mm?

Have you tried focusing in live mode where you can zoom in on the image to make sure it's sharp? I usually raise the mirror and use the infrared remote too, not sure if you've tried this. Also, remember atmospheric effects, which can take the image out of focus when doing lunar shots.

Here's a picture of my dog Dexter taken with my favourite lens while out on a walk. I was really pleased with this picture, and the conditions were perfect. I also can not express how awesome this 50mm prime is.

I must congratulate you on a very good web page. I will be doing some experimenting with my mirror lens when I have all the bits I need. You gave me the idea with 2 adaptall tc's (must admit, as I haven't had good experiences with TC's, I thought that might be pushing it, but for a bit of small change, it's worth a go, at the very least it will be a back up for the other tc), so I'll buy another and give it a go, it should give me good reach on a 500mm mirror lens (sturdy tripod at the ready). I have an o-gps1 unit for my K-5, although it has an astrotracer function I think it will be limited with applying it to (before taking into account the crop factor of the sensor) an effective focal length of about 2000mm (if my maths is right). Although the astrotracer gives a maximum tracking time of 5 minutes, that's only at shorter focal lengths, the longer the focal length, the shorter the tracking time; I think if I attempt 2000mm with it, the o-gps1 unit may have a meltdown in protest!

You would stack lunar images depending upon the atmospheric conditions, you may get a great shot in one image, but it would be many times better if you took several shots and stacked them, I have seen tonnes of moon pictures, you can bet that most of the decent ones are stacked. The atmosphere can disrupt your ability to get a sharp picture for different reasons, for instance at night heat radiates from the ground into the atmosphere causing distortion, also pollution plays a part too. Generally speaking the colder the better, especially for mirror lenses.

I use DeepSkyStacker - Free it's free to download. Basically it improves the picture quality. This sight will explain it better: How Image Stacking Works . Most good astrophotography including star constellations, nebulas, planets and of course our moon will have been stacked. Even the data from the hubble telescope gets the images stacked, a good example is the deep universe image that showed galaxies towards the outer reaches of the universe.

I haven't had much joy with tc's in the past either and my vivitar 2x tc is useful as a paperweight, although I seem to get ok results with it connected to my sigma 135-400mm apo. I read good things about the adaptall 2x tc and seen some awesome results with it on adaptall lenses and on mirror lenses too. I'll be boring my wife to death with it I'm sure next week.

Well, it will be fun to find out. From some of the mirror lens pictures I've seen some look pretty sharp. Also I always shoot in raw format and I'm pretty good at photoshop ha ha! I've just bought an adaptall 2x tele-converter 01f, so it will be an interesting comparison, as well as stir up some healthy debate.

Cool, I've just bought a Tamron adaptall-2 2x tele-converter 01F as well, so it will be interesting to see the reach that I will get. Good job I have a very sturdy tripod!

Just bought my first mirror lens and managed to pick up a Tamron 55B SP 500mm, looking forward to posting some images, I enjoy astrophotography so I will most likely post lunar shots. I'll be interested to see what I can do with my o-gps1 unit that I have mounted to my K-5. I'll test it with my 2x tele-converter too, although I'm not that optimistic to be honest. Also it'll be interesting to see how it compares to my Sigma 135-400mm APO 400mm lens. Might be worth shooting some comparison shots with and without the 2x tele-converter.

Well one of the many reasons I chose the K-5 is all the old legacy lenses I could use. As soon as I ordered it I researched some lenses, with the help of this forum I might add, and bought the Vivitar 28mm F2.8 close focus lens, a Pentax-m 50mm F1.7 lens and for mainly astrophotography a Sigma 400mm F5.6 lens, I bought my camera with the 18-55mm kit lens and the 50-200mm lens too and are both weather resistant. I love shooting the moon so I've got my hands on a Vivitar 2x teleconverter, I know it reduces the amount of light coming through to the sensor, but seeing as the moon is such a bright object I'm not too worried about this. I'll put some sample images on when I get the chance. The weather is absolutely crap here at the moment.

Hi, I've recently purchased a Pentax K-5 and loving it. I'm shooting with my camera nearly everyday and I'm looking forward to posting some of my pictures on the forum when I've produced something that is worthy enough! I'm just playing around with it at the moment and trying out different settings. I much prefer to use the camera in manual mode as I love the ability to set it up for what I'm shooting. I love taking landscape images, street images and some astrophotography too.
Regards Stu
