A big thankyou to everyone's input on this subject. I was walking around with a crow bar at work today that weighed in a 1800 g, same as the DFA*70-200, (+ including the K-5) just to get a feel of what to expect. Moving around was fine, raising at shoulder height was awkward. I would need a Monopod if I was to go ahead with it

The DA* 60-250 looks like the better choice with less weight to lug and with the slight longer focal length. I still may consider buying a used one now that I'm aware where to take the DA* 60-250 for repair if the SDM fails on me. Thanks garywakeling.

An upgrade to a used K-3II or K-3III including the DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 PLM looks like a nice option. I just hope the menu layout on the K-3's aren't to different to the K-5's?

I will give this some thought. Cheers

I am considering on upgrading to a newer body for the exact purpose which you mentioned. Either K-3II or K-3III. Although, I can't help but stare on a K-1 with low shutter count at an incredible price  Maybe another time

Hello

I am trying to decide on a zoom Lens to add with my DA 15mm Limited, DA 40mm Limited and DA* 55mm on my K-5. I also have a Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC (my latest Lens) which I've been testing lately but, it lacks both sharpness and the rich colours of the primes and I find it uninspiring.

So, I looked at the DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 PLM (love the FL) but just found out that it is not compatible with the K-5 OR the K-5 iis
I checked out the DA* 60-250mm F4; liked the reviews, sharp IQ, great colours and weather resistance. I looked at a number of used DA* 60-250mm Lenses on ebay and was just about to pull the trigger on decent priced one in Japan and then, I read info on SDM motor issues and replacements!

If I'm to buy the DA* 60-250mm, then I'll have to buy it new but with the hefty price tag, especially in Australia and there's always the possible SDM motor failure risk down the track. Last week, I was looking at reviews and pics on the Pentax D FA 70-200mm f/2.8 and stumbled in to a used one this week, in mint condition and at a similar price to a new DA* 60-250mm. Hmm, a FF Lens on my K-5; am I better off with the heavy D FA 70-200mm? I've read that 70-200mm FF FL is equivalent to 100-300 mm on APSc?

I am far from an experienced photographer, not very knowledgeable with technical camera terms and I have not taken many shots as of late but, due to Covid19 and these ridiculous lockdowns in Melbourne, I need something to do outdoors and I am finding photography a great way to escape these unsettled times and which is inspiring me to be creative after noticing some incredible sky and cloud formations, distance sunsets on higher ground in the last few months. Oh, and low moon. I need the right tool/ lens to capture such pics and more

What are your thoughts on these two Lenses or suggestion on other kinds of Lenses?

Thanks

50mm 2.8 macro lenses for Weddings?

Hi

I have a wedding in over a months time & I am having a hard time trying to decide on which portrait Lens to buy for the occasion. I am still quite new to DSLR,s and in that short time have bought a DA 15mm & DA 40mm lens. One lens that I have in mind for portraits is the DA 55mm 1.4. There's a lot to like about it but my main concern on the lens is the busy Bokeh & can be a little harsh from pics that I've seen. The sharpness & detail of the subject is fantastic but I can't seem to find smooth Bokeh pics with the DA 55 (sorry if i may seem a bit picky or carried away with this). I have selected a list of 50mm to 85mm lenses a few months ago, which have great ratings & positive reviews on this forum and 60% of them are 50mm 2.8 macro lenses. Some of those lenses include:
D FA 50mm 2.8 - FA 50mm 2.8 - F 50mm 2.8 - Sigma 70mm 2.8

I had a look at three pics which have been taken by Adam, with the FA 50mm 2.8 & I absolutely love them. Sharp subject with smooth bokeh, just what I'm after.

My main question is, are 50mm 2.8 macro lenses ideal for wedding portrait photo's or am I better off going for a wider apeture, F/1.4 for instants?

I'm open for suggestions of other lenses which are sharp & have smooth Bokeh.

Cheers

The Lens is a F 50mm 1.7, "auto" lens from the 80's I believe.

Hi

Their is a Lens on Ebay which i really want. My only concern is that the Lens does have a little oil on the Blades. Is this something I should be concerned about? Would this be a costly repair job?

DA 15mm or 21mm, so hard to decide

My main aim/ goal at the moment is to get three Lenses with the best possible IQ, a wide lense which as you may already know is a struggle for me, I already have a DA 40mm which is great and last is to get a portait lens in which i will have little trouble deciding on, possibly the DA 55mm. I am trying to achieve this by late October, mostly for a Wedding. I will be looking into the Voigtlander 20/3.5 which Frogfish suggested but i have little understanding with older third party lenses, can you mount them on K mounts? Do they require adaptors?

Hi 123jippo, i agree with you that prime lenses do have better IQ and most primes will out perform a zoom lens without a doubt. But when i compared DA 21mm images to DA 12-24mm images, some feedback on owners of these two lenses, reading reviews & analysis reports, most of that information favour the DA 12-24mm for what i want to acheive in wide to moderately wide pics from my understanding

A big thanks to everyone for all your tips & advice. I love prime Lenses and their compactness but the DA 15mm is too wide for more than 50% of shots i will be taking, though i really love the IQ and flare resistance and for the DA 21, IQ is not as sharp as i would like but the FL is very good. The only option for me would be to buy the the DA 12-24mm which should cover my needs. Although, i don't know how well i will handle the bulk of the 12-24mm climbing rocks :hmm:

DA 15mm or 21mm, so hard to decide

Hello

I am one of a number of photographers who has (or had) trouble trying to decide on which wide angle lens to choose, Pentax DA 15mm or DA 21mm. Both lenses have their pros & cons from what I’ve read and because I really can't decide (or afford to buy both) which one will best suit me, it might be best if I allow for Members of the Pentax forum who have had experience with both of these two lenses to help decide for me.

I have a K-5 + DA 40mm f2.8 lens and i have had both for only 4 months. Before that, i had a MFT (Micro Four Thirds) Olympus EPL-2 and a Panasonic 28mm (35mm film terms) f2.5 prime lens & i really loved the FL sharpness, contrast/ colors I got out of it which is why I've taken so many shots using it. Most of the photo's i took with the MFT where portrait landscape, landscape, sunsets, buildings, street shots and group photos. 80% of pics I take involve people/ subjects and are mostly outdoors.

DA 15mm

I really love some of the images that I've seen of the 15mm in this forum, they look pretty sharp, flare resistance and starburst effect is fantastic as well as low distortion

The major issue for me is the FL. It may be too wide for a majority of the pics I take and being quite a wide lens, will it stretch or make people look a little abnormal in the picture?

DA 21mm

FL is just about perfect, mainly because I've had some experience using this FL in the past, and f3.2 is decent

The images that I've seen of the 21mm are also very good but not as dynamic and not quite as sharp as the 15mm and has more distortion. I'm not sure if I've seen starbursts on any of the pics with the 21mm, maybe it's just not as pronounce as the 15mm

Does anyone have the same image used with both lenses to make comparisons?

Some suggestions from what i have read would be to get the 15mm and then i can always crop down to a 21mm if need be and that way i get best of both worlds. If i get the 21mm, i can smart sharpen it on photo shop (i have very little experience in that field), and another suggestion would be to get a wide zoom lens, DA 12-24mm (how does that compare to the limiteds?) or a Sigma 15-30mm.

I am open for all suggestions & opinions. I realise their is no perfect lens out their and i have to compromise and learn to work around things. In a nutshell, it comes down to IQ vs FL, which would be the better choice for me?

A first lens for my new K-5 body

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions & advice, i am really considering buying a zoom lens to start off with. I'm leaning more towards a Tamron 17-50mm, or a Sigma 24-70mm than the Pentax 18-55mm kit lense. The advantage i get out of the kit lens is i get to try one out in a camera store where as with the Tamron and Sigma i will have to get them ordered. I'm unsure with the Tamron, i hear you may receive one that works great but you can also receive one that's a lemon! Mmm, a bit risky

A first lens for my new K-5 body

Hi all

I've bought a K-5 body over a month ago and during that time I've been patiently reading reviews and checking out photo's on lenses (mainly primes) and trying to decide on which lens to choose for my first DSLR K-5 body.

I have an interest for a range of styles of photography which means i will need different kinds of lenses but i have decided that i would like to start off with a lens that's based around Landscaping, Architecture and street photography, a wide lens for preferably

Money is a bit of an issue at the moment, so sadly i don't think FA 31mm will be a first lens for me but i have been saving up for the last month and my limit is between $600 - 800 (AUD)

Image quality means a lot to me so primes are probably the way to go for me but their are also some zooms that are also tempting

Their aren't a lot of Pentax mount lenses around stores in Melbourne Australia to try out (or not that i know of) which makes my choice on a lens hard to decide on, so i have to rely on peoples reviews/opinions on this matter

Some of the lenses i had in mind include Pentax da 15mm f4 - da 21mm f3.2 - F 28mm f2.8 - 12-24mm f4 (second hand) and Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.

The focal length of the da 21mm is just about perfect but there are mixed opinions about the lens, in a nutshell, it's good but not great and is on the bottom of the ltd's in IQ (even though on the database it seems impressive)

The da 15mm seems to do better on reviews and looking at some of the photo's people have taken with the 15mm on this forum are breath taking. I love taking sunsets, cliff beaches, mountains but it is very wide, especially if you like having a subject in the picture about 70% of the time. I use a 28mm equivalent lens and at times makes the subject/subjects look tiny.

F 28mm is not exactly wide but it seem's good for street photo's and is very sharp but very difficult to get a hold of

The zoom lenses are versatile and ideal for the kinds of photo's i like but i don't believe the IQ matches the primes

So i would like to ask for some suggestions/advice or recommendations on a lens for an ameture like myself, weather it's a Pentax lens, a third party lens, prime or zoom, even older manual lenses with good IQ, your help and advice is important to me

Sorry if i seem a bit picky about this but i would prefer to buy right then buy twice, I've made this mistake to many times in the past with musical instruments

Cheers

Hi wizofoz

I have no lens at this stage, just the K-5 body and it's not even at my place yet!

I have an Olympus pen which I'm using for now with two reasonable prime lenses, so I'm still taking some nice shots for now

I've made the mistake in buying two kit lenses with the Olympus pen which are just sitting in my room collecting dust so i want to try and make sure i get a Pentax mount lens which I'll love and use, so taking some time in researching and also saving some $ for a good quality lens is worth it in the long run. Not to say that the Pentax kit lenses are bad, i have read that they are descent but i would prefer ltd's, fas's etc

Say wizofoz, is this a collection of your lenses if you don't mind me asking? - FA 31, 43, 50, 77, DA12-24, 15, 16-50 18-55WR, 21, 35, 40, 50-135, 60-250, 100WR, Sigma 150-500,

I am still trying to decide on my first lens which I'm finding difficult, but with a little more reading, even possibly some advise if i get stuck, I'm sure I'll come to a decision soon enough

A big thanks to everyone with all their helpful advice and comments :D
