Thanks for this; great info. I'm going to try the "loosening" one or two of the screws under my battery door and see if it makes any difference. It seems as though this is really more of an annoyance than a sign of a real problem...but it's extremely annoying and destroys the illusion of solidity.

I was extremely impressed with the 24-70 on my recent trip overseas; extremely versatile range, good performance wide open and very sharp when stopped down in good light. AF is accurate but not what I would call lightning fast. As others have said, 70mm is too short on FF for typical sports; you really want a 70-200 (I have the Tamron 70-200 which is an incredible bargain for the quality).

How difficult is it to remove the shell and DIY some filler shims?

I'll give it a shot; it's too easy NOT to try it, but seems like a bizarre "fix". I wonder what Pentax does to solve the issue if you send it in for service? Does it come back again after the "official" fix?

My brand new K-1 Mk II started to exhibit this creaking/ clicking issue while on vacation in Greece. I was using the body+battery grip and 24-70 lens (heavy but by no means a monster) with the Blackrapid strap and it was working beautifully. We were on a day trip to Olympia so I was taking tons of pictures and it started creaking about half-way through the day. At first I thought it might be the IS system moving but realized that it was actually the grip area making the "clicking" sound, like the grip finish surface had come slightly loose from the body structure underneath.
At any rate, it's really annoying and makes the body feel cheap IMO. It doesn't affect performance of the camera, at least for now, but I'm not sure if this is an issue that will get worse over time or if it will be worse with longer, heavier lenses. Is it worth getting this "fixed" under warranty (purchased body in late April). If so, what exactly IS the fix that Pentax service does to prevent the issue from returning?
I haven't tried the screw loosening trick yet, but loosening screws seems to be a counter-intuitive and extremely sketchy solution to this problem.

I don't know why the D850 is lighter, but I like that the K-1 is substantially smaller than the D850 in most dimensions, especially height. This is great because if you use the K-1 with older MF primes, or basically any Pentax lens prior to the D-FA beasts, it's not much bigger than APS-C bodies and actually very manageable.
If you want to mount the DFA lenses like the 24-70, 70-200, or 15-30, you can certainly manage but the handling is FAR superior with the battery grip. I own the 24-70 and the old Tamron 70-200 and both lenses benefit tremendously from the battery grip...not required, but easier to hand hold for a longer period of time despite the additional weight of the grip itself.
When I want to "go small", I remove the grip and mount my 43 Limited and the K-1 II is a completely different camera. I like having the option and keeping the camera body smaller was a smart choice by Pentax.

FWIW, 24mm is (for me) the perfect vacation photo focal length. For that reason, the 24-70 2.8 is a great, though heavy option. You could buy a used FA 20 prime, which would get you a sufficiently wide angle without getting too crazy.

I’d go with the 15 and definitely bring the 100 macro; it’s a wonderful portrait lens and useful for short telephoto landscapes as well in addition to Macro work.

I have a K-1 Mk2 now, but I really liked the K-30 with my Sigma 17-50 2.8...very sharp, quick and silent focusing and versatile. I have several manual aperture lenses that I can use (43 L, A 50 1.7, M 135 3.5, Vivitar 70-210 3.5) but manual focusing is a drag on crop sensor cameras...I would really prefer to do the DIY aperture block replacement but not if the problem will return again!

My K-30 died about 2 years ago...same issue. My K-x still works well. I've been looking into repairing the K-30 with the ebay solenoid parts but haven't gotten around to it. It's too bad since I really like the styling and performance of the K-30.

I have a K-1 Mk2 and have previously used a K-1 when it was first released (rental). If I owned a K1, I probably wouldn’t pay for the upgrade, but I chose the MK2 model for further firmware support and the promise of slight AF improvement. The K-1 Mk2 seems ever slightly more decisive when focusing, and I think it’s a subtle but noticeable difference. Whether that’s worth $550 is up to the individual...it really is a tough call for people upgrading.

I also took a look around various portions of the RAW images in the central 1/3rd of the frame at ISO 100 for maximum detail, then at ISO 1600-12800 and I agree 100%. The colored string looks a little less detailed than the K-1, but it's more of a contrast issue than any actual reduction of details. Hilariously, the K-1 and K-1 II both look better than the A7R3 and match the D850 in most areas of the image at any ISO from 100-12800 (again central 1/3 only).

The reshot scene is up now...score updated to 80%. Still not a recommended camera by DPR, but that’s not shocking. Time to pixel peep again :)

Yes, of course. If you exposed properly in the first place, even ISO 25000 images can look decent. But nobody is going to (or should) pixel peep those images because they are severely compromised on any camera. The differences between brands is minimal to non-existent at this point if you are printing images. Your subject matter, lighting, composition, and post-processing technique have far more to do with the quality of the end result than the tiny differences in sharpness. The megapixels don't even matter anymore for 99.99% of images; heck, cell phones do "good enough" in most conditions at this point, with zero processing required after the fact. The point is, the entire issue has been blown out of proportion and has nothing to do with photography.

How big are you printing these ISO 6400 images? Bigger than 36" wide? If no, then it doesn't matter one wit whether you take them with a K-1, a K-1 MkII, or even a K-3 frankly.
For me the few images at that ISO that are taken are extreme low light candids inside dark restaurants, clubs, outdoor cafes at night, which are pretty much relegated to use on social media/ personal use.

The high ISO images out of the K-1 MkII are more malleable in post- better color saturation with less NR required to make them usable. If you are shooting ISO 6400 you are most likely not planning on making 36" wide prints from those images. When you zoom out to even 100% level on a nice monitor after typical post-processing, the K-1 MkII images are more pleasing.
This entire "issue" is being blown way way out of proportion by the pixel-peeping crowd, as per usual, since we have been at the point where image quality stopped being a limitation back when the K-5 was released.

I've never used the DFA 50 Macro, but I have used the 100 and the 77 and have always felt that the 77 at F5.6 is about as sharp as possible. I'd put it up against glass from any manufacturer at that setting. I'm very surprised and still have doubts that the DFA 50 Macro is sharper in the center than the Limited; it just doesn't make sense given the design intentions with typical macro lenses vs. other lenses (max resolution in center for Limited, corner to corner emphasis for macros at the expense of a smidgen of resolution in the center).

The FA77 has few peers in the center of the frame, especially at around F5.6.
As long as they base their image quality assessment on the central portion of the frame and use the exact same settings across the board, we might finally learn something useful. :)

Firmware v1.00 is final release firmware if they follow industry standards. Pre-release beta is labeled .98, .99, etc.
V1.01 is a firmware revision; an early one but a revision nonetheless. Again, if they followed standard software naming...
