BigMackCam, thank you so much for your tutorial! It looks like really the best way of converting negatives.
However I'm not familiar with Raw Therapee and GIMP. Is there a similar to Colour Toning tool in Photoshop?

Replacement focusing screens now available for K-1

It's well-known that the AF points of K-1 are rather big and it's almost impossible to achieve accurate focus on distant subjects that are not very big. So now I'm choosing a focusing screen that could help me in evaluating/correcting AF when it is needed. I narrowed my search to two screens: Canon S-type and Canon Ec-B.
Usually, people buy the S-type screen. I also like that it is plain. However, some say that it is not much more comfortable to use than standard screens, there may be miss focusing. Has anyone tried both of these screens? Which one is better?

KX-Digital, I guess your assumption onl focusing screens, relating the K-1, is wrong.
What I found in various posts on different forums is the following:

Pentax K-1: 38,25x26 mm
Canon Ee-S: 38,5x26,3
Leica R4-R7: 37x24
Pentax LX: 35,2x25 (36х25)
Pentax MZ-M: 35x24,5
Nikon F6: 38x27
Minolta X-700: 37x25
Zenit 19: 37х25

A few days ago I replaced the focusing screen of my Z-1p on the screen from MZ-M. Their dimensions are absolutely the same. Then I compared the spare screen with my other spare screen from the K-1. The K-1's focusing screen is visibly larger.

Steve, can it be that your knowledge on mounting a focusing screen may be not correct?
I found another post where it is said that a focusing screen should be placed with a matte side facing up - split prism focusing screen for Z-1p / PZ-1p - PentaxForums.com

Some say that some focusing screens from different generations of Pentax cameras are perfectly interchangeable. I'm wondering, maybe a focusing screen from LX or MZ-M could easily fit my K-1?..

Does anyone know the actual price of the Distagon 35/2 in mint condition? It turned out, that now I have two of them :)

In my opinion, photos shot a "new" Ektachrome 100 could have looked better in terms of color. I hope the images will shine with a better scanning.

K-1 + 50/2 Makro @ f2.5, 1/8, ISO3200. Do you see some sort of clarity and 3D-pop in this image that 50/2 Makro is so famous for?

Thank you, guys!
BigMackCam, you've got a cool Avatar! :) I tried to adjust the sliders in the Camera Calibration section in Lightroom. It does help but still, the adjustments are too rough to my taste.

TonyW, I guess, your advice on trying the Adobe DNG Profile Editor really can help. I looked through the .pdf file you linked and noticed that the adjustments can be done very precisely. I should give it a try. If it works, I'll have to stick to the Lightroom or Photoshop with its ACR. Although I don't like them very much, it'll be OK.
As for the Silkypix, I would really like to use it more. Sometimes it seems that only minor adjustments should be applied and the colours will be 100% equal. Alas, it looks like there aren't corresponding all the sliders so that I could make the correct adjustments. At the same time, there is a very interesting instrument - "Contrast center" (along with the ordinary "Contrast"). I suppose that Pentax also uses such an instrument in its OOC jpegs but all other converters, except for the Silkypix, lack it. Also, the sharpness in the Silkypix is phenomenal!

Well, you're right. Generally speaking, there are more than just one sharpening method in the Lightroom. However, if we're talking just about the global sharpening in the Develop module, there is only one method. Using this method, one can move 4 sliders: Amount, Radius, Detail, Masking. On the contrary, in the Silkypix there are 4 such methods:
1. Unsharp mask (Amount, Radius, Threshold sliders) - practically, the same method as in the Lightroom, but without the Detail slider.
2. Normal sharp (Outline emphasis, Detail emphasis, False outline contr. sliders) - somewhat ordinary sharpening.
3. Pure detail (Outline emphasis, Detail emphasis, False outline contr. sliders) - for the extraordinary amount of small details.
4. Natural sharp (Outline emphasis, Ringing artifact contr., Bokeh preservation sliders) - this is a new method that appeared in the 8th version of Silkypix.

The fourth new method is just phenomenal! The sharpening is really done in a very natural way and images look very-very sharp and with almost no visible noise (even at default settings)! The Lightroom sharpening looks very mushy in comparison.
Also, in the Silkypix there is another global sharpening method which is called "Demosaicing sharpening". It can be used in conjunction with all other methods but it is something different. I don't use it at all. Nevertheless, you can see how more advanced the Silkypix is regarding the sharpening issue.

where to buy CLA-ed Jupiter lenses

Jupiter 9 is a very good lens but why don't you buy a Jupiter 37A instead? Jupiter 37A is a "modified" version of Jupiter 9 and it is considered to be an overall better lens. It also has a rounded diaphragm (12 blades!) but it is a bit faster (f3.5 vs f4.0) and sharper. The images shot on a Jupiter 37A are just incredible! Surely, as most old Russian lenses (including the Jupiter 9), images shot on a 37A do have a little bit of initial blue cast. However, after a minor PP, the colors become very vibrant! Also, the images from the 37A do have a distinct "3D effect" and incredible clarity.
I have many * and Limited lenses but after a few days of using the 37A I was blown away by it! It's like a 135mm limited lens! It's very compact and built as a tank as well. Now I almost don't shoot with my FA*80-200 at all.
After a time I began to think that I want a similar lens but with a normal focusing length (I have a 43 Limited and *55 but they are different). The only alternative I found was a Zeiss Makro Planar 50/2 that costs much more :) However, I bought it as well )
By the way, if anyone is interested, I have a very rare version of 37A for sale (in almost LN condition). It is an "MC-H-30" and it is considered to be the best of all other versions. At a time they were sold, it cost 120 roubles, an "MC" version cost 100 roubles and an ordinary version of 37A (without MC) cost 55 roubles.
Look for yourself how sharp a 37A is - 37?_PixelShift.jpg / ?????? Mail.Ru (pay attention at a flower bud at the upper right corner and also at a flower trunk at the lower left corner).

Yes. I also never use focus peaking. I use siple 10% and higher magnification for manual focusing. In the video mode, in contrary, this feature would be very handful.

I'm almost sure that FA* is a better all-round lens. It has a very special colour rendition. I also think that it is a rather sharp lens. However one should always have an open mind. It's interesting to me wether D FA* is really better or it is not.

Thank you for your photos, Colton! They are of a very high standard! It also seems to me that you are a good person and many Pentaxforums readers (including me) are really grateful for the acquaintance with you and your work!

As for the scanning, my opinion is a little bit different. I, personally, don't want to make images from scans. I think that when we edit film scans too much we loose the benefits of film. So far I prefer good Noritsu scans to scans from other scanners (even Nikon 9000). I find Noritsu's color rendition to be the best.

K-3 delay when using the flash

I had K-5 IIs and now have K-3. I would take K-5 IIs over K-3 any day when a flashlight is needed. Almost always P-TTL with K-5 IIs was spot on with a bounced speedlight's head.
P-TTL with K-3 is almost unusable to me due to the long delay.

Swap FA* 85mm 1.4 for DA 70mm 2.4 Limited?

I have DA*55, FA77Lim and FA*85. They are all great lenses but only with the FA*85 almost every image comes out to be a masterpiece. Only FA*85 delivers some sort of FF experience. Objects pop out from images! Also, the lens somehow alters the colours so that human faces look extremly well.

Here, I think, one can find good examles of what FA*85 is capable of (as well as DA*55) - [AF] Portrait bonanza with Pentax FA* 85/1.4 and DA* 55/1.4

K-3 in camera HDR (Dynamic Range)

How one should handle K-3's RAW HDR files? Do I understand correctly that the only way is converting a combined RAW HDR file into 3 ordinary raw files? If it so then it is not that advantageos to the usual way of making HDRs from 3 single raw files as it was before.
