Lens prices and our channel strategy in the U.S. - Ned Responses

Thank you for your response....well put, clear, and direct.

I have to agree with your line of thought...I believe Pentax is making decisions that they believe will ultimately result in their long term success. I wish Pentax long term success. But, are we not allowed to simply disagree with their choices? No, I would not bet your life or mine that they just might not get this right. And you are certainly correct that we can buy Pentax or not. That drives the message home to Pentax more so than any of our banter. Short term, though, my, and others, incessant whining is meant to ensure that Ricoh/Pentax is getting an earful. God bless capitalism. We do have a choice in our purchases and our brand loyalty. I have to be honest...I am most aggravated because I really had my heart set on two Pentax lens purchases: the 70mm and 60-250mm. Literally, a day too late. Taken from my grasp...especially on the 60-250. 70 jumped too though. Point is, the market is simple. We can bring in all the in depth analytical economic evaluations and business models we wish, but it's really simple. Supplier boosts prices ridiculously. Consumer not happy(borderline pi##ed off). Consumer complains, sucks it up and purchases, or goes elsewhere. Global market complexities be damned. I am zeroing in on some Sigmas and Tamrons...guess I"ll be the tiny, unheard voice in the wilderness. But, I'm A OK with it....well, that's bull, I wanted those Pentax lenses.

I do respect your position. I will probably stop complaining and move on at some point...have patience.

Side note: Thanks Smeggypants for supporting freedom of speech point. I am very impressed with the integrity and smartness of this forum. I think I will just focus more on just enjoying my new camera. I readily realize I can't have a major effect upon Pentax's future, but I reserve the right to chime in...it's the American way.

Be good to yourselves and your families...

I see from the detailed response that this horse has been beaten to death. And the thread should be closed until the 2nd quarter 2013 in a wait and see mode. Ned, or the Bosses Back in Japan, shouldn't have to experience any more negative feedback. Why not? Why shouldn't they hear what their customers are continuing to say? Might it affect a more positive outcome sooner? From the well laid out response, probably not. But, it can't hurt, can it? Might even have some small benefit to provide Pentax continued feedback so they might, might just listen up? I'd rather continue providing them reminders than going silent until 2nd quarter 2013. I understand your frustration with less knowledgeable and informed persons, but, truly, you don't need to read the feedback on this topic and waste your time responding in the future. I meant no offense.

Nothing Ned has to say justifies the lens price increases we are experiencing. I note in the Forum threads that the people calling for calm, and "just wait and see" are the same people that have an established inventory of lenses. I imagine we are too simple to understand the economic currents and the new "channel strategies" that will result in a brave new world for Pentax. Bull. I bought the K5 researching a great camera with IS that also presented the added benefit of lenses that were top notch and didn't cost an arm and a leg.

Ned, myself being an old Navy man, you are the Captain of the Ship, and you are responsible for the Pentax ship's welfare and success. You are also culpable for its failures. You answer to shareholders. And ultimately, us, the consumers. We run the ship.

You should consider decisions that will alleviate the angst the Pentax consumer is feeling. Get off your high horse. You believe that you have a successful business model, a vision, a great strategy....but you are alienating a host of people that placed you in the saddle in the first place.

I am not so naive to believe that Pentax's business strategy will be altered. But are there measures that Penax can take to address the recent draconian lens price increases? Hmmm....are their hands really tied? I think not.

My sincere apologies to the loyal and devout Pentaxians out there...I mean no disrespect whatsoever in this thread. Reading the forums and gleaning such great advice and thoughts on photography, I have nothing but respect and thanks for all of you. I hope this issue is resolved in some manner expeditiously.

Considering purchase of Sigma 50-200mm lens for my newly purchased K5. My question is concerning the HSM used for the lens as well as the OS. Is there any integration problem with the HSM drive? I don't believe so,but I thought that Pentax used a screw drive. Also, the K5 has OS built in so is there a problem, or advantage, with going with Sigma?

Well, since I'm at it, any opinions on the Sigma 50-200 vs the Pentax 50-200? WR aside, the Sigma has a much better price point($159), than the Pentax($249), especially since Pentax lens price increases have left me cold. Originally was saving up for the Pentax 60-250, but no way at $2K! Anyways, I thought I'd buy cheap and sit back to see if this cost increase mess sorts itself out.

Might strech it to $429 for Pentax 55-300mm if someone can convince me it would be major improvement over either. I noted that photo zone suggested 55-300 over 50-200.

Geez, I'm all over the place, but any and all input is welcome! Thanks!

I think I started spewing my frustration about the price increases and then started to find my alternate solutions, but this particular thread is focusing, and rightly so, on the new price modeling. I'll find another thread, but huge thanks for your input...very grateful. This forum is very helpful and I appreciate the patience with a newcomer.

Thibs,
That's the 3 choices I've been considering. I like hiking trails with good lighting(not early morning or dusk), and enjoy capturing wildlife photos. I've read there is not a great deal of difference between 200mm and 300mm so I figure the 2.8 Tamron or Sigma might be better choice. Good price point on Pentax, though....

What about the Tammy 28-300? Not the sharpest I imagine, but compared to Pentax 55-300mm?

Thanks for all of the valuable input!

Thanks for response... I do love the camera, just significantly annoyed that I didn't' make my purchases prior to these huge increases. Prices may settle down, but I would have to wait which makes it even more aggravating, with no guarantee of a better outcome.

In the meantime, can anyone suggest a good medium to long zoom at less than $1K? Tamron or Sigma glass better?

Just bought K5 with hopes of good small prime and 60-250 purchase...now considering sending back. $2,000.00? Really? Feel I've been ambushed...should have went with Nikon or Cannon. And I don't give a flip about market corrections and welcome to the "real world" commentary. The price increases were severe at any consideration, and it's certainly difficult for a new Pentax user to develop loyalty when he's shafted out of the gate. Bet that recent K5 price reduction a couple of weeks back wasn't related at all to this lens price jack. Paranoia must be getting the better of me.
