Pentax DA SMC 50mm f/1.8 toughness!

Hi Everyone,

Recently I had a pretty significant yard sale and sold a couple of camera bodies, some DA* lenses and LTD primes as I'm cooling it on the photography front for a while as I'm engaging in some further study.

Not wanting to give up completely, I did keep my K-r, kit lenses and picked up the cheap DA SMC 50mm f/1.8 and DA SMC 35mm f/2.4 AL lenses to supplement the kit with a couple of plastic fantastic primes with great image quality.

Well, the image quality of the DA SMC 50mm f/1.8 and DA SMC 35mm f/2.4 AL certainly lives up to expectations, but I commonly read about people being concerned with their 'cheap' plastic construction.

I can say that sure, they're made of plastic, but it's good quality plastic and the fit and finish on both lenses is superb.

The point of my post though is to add a little testimony to their toughness (which is something people seem concerned about because of the plastic construction). I was covering a bass playing workshop of an international artist last week for a local music distributor with my little K-r and the DA SMC 50mm f/1.8 and DA SMC 35mm f/2.4 AL. Everything was going swimmingly, getting nice shots in low light and really enjoying it... that is until it happened!

I was at the back of the crowd (the workshop was in a large music store), and the floor was polished concrete. Smooth, but HARD! I had the 35mm mounted and was getting some shots from the back of the crowd of the whole scene, and I had placed the DA SMC 50mm f/1.8 on top of a stack of amplifier boxes. The lens was about 4 feet from the ground.

Sure enough, I turned around and bumped the lens with my arm from the top of the box and sent it crashing four feet down straight on to hard concrete!

Of course, my immediate thought was 'it's a gonner!'. It made a horrible noise when it landed, and the lens cap popped off and went scuttling across the floor. My only consolation was 'oh well... it's wrecked now, but at least it was a cheap lens'. :(

Guess what?

It survived! After getting over the embarrassment of dropping a lens on a concrete floor during a quiet passage of music and having everyone hear it (what a klutz! :o ), I quickly picked it up and jammed it in my pocket. Once I'd regained my composure I pulled it out again and had a really good look at it. I could not see a single mark ANYWHERE on it. No evidence whatsoever that it had fallen. How could this be possible with a plastic lens dropped four feet onto concrete? I was thankful that it didn't have any cosmetic evidence of the fall, but sceptical about its operation. I mounted it on the camera... mounted fine. Fired the camera up expecting to see an error... none! :D Tested autofocus... fine! Banged off some test shots... perfect!

The lens is operating perfectly and has no evidence whatsoever of the fall. At around $159 and $199 AUD respectively for the DA SMC 50mm f/1.8 and DA SMC 35mm f/2.4 AL these lenses are a no-brainer! Cheap, great optical performance, great build quality and tough too!

I'm converted.

My K-r has recently begun exhibiting this problem. Very disappointing for a two year old body with less than 2000 shutter actuations!

Only the Pentax DA40mm f/2.8 LTD lens left now folks. I've discounted it for the final time... the price is really quite silly now.

Grab it while it lasts!

Hey Rob, yes it's still here and I'm in Doreen in the north east of Melbourne. I work in the CBD so I could bring it in to work with me if that works too.

Cheers,

Luke.

I've just applied some further price reduction to these items folks.

Just remember the 50-135mm, K-01 and Sigma 10-20 are all in brand new condition. The DA40mm is in very good second hand condition, so these are all a great opportunity to secure some fabulous items at great prices.

Greetings everyone,

I've decided to sell all of my gear except for my little K-r kit to take family snaps. ;)

I'm so flat out with everything at the moment I don't have time to pursue any serious photography and I've just committed 3-4 years to undertaking a new course of study. As it's going to be at least 4 years before my time is my own again I'm reducing distractions around here and my photography gear is one of the hobbies in the list.

All of the gear described is in excellent to mint condition. Any visible marks are stated in each item description, otherwise it's absolutely as new. Except the DA 40mm and DA 70mm lenses I purchased all equipment new and have taken extreme care of it since. It has all really seen very little use. All equipment is in the original packaging and includes all original accessories.

SOLDPentax K-5 body: As new condition. Used with low shutter actuation of 5844. Latest firmware installed and in excellent condition in every way. LCD screen is blemish free... a protector was fitted from new, and I will include a spare genuine Pentax battery. $400

SOLDPentax K-01 body (black): Only 467 shutter actuations. Absolutely as new; would suit a new buyer. $300 $290 $270 $260
SOLDPentax SMC DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 lens: Again as new. A recent purchase bought new in 2013. Only a few hundred shots with this lens. Perfect aesthetically with no marks at all. $750

SOLDPentax SMC DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 lens: Again as new. A recent purchase bought new in 2013. Only a few hundred shots with this lens. Perfect aesthetically with no marks at all. $750 $730

SOLDPentax SMC DA 40mm f/2.8 LTD lens: I purchased this lens second hand in 2013 from Sandy Hancock. I believe he had a slightly stiff focus ring and had it serviced. It's been perfect since. Some slight scuffs on the lens cap, but otherwise excellent. Clean body and glass. $350 $320 $300 $290 $270

SOLDPentax SMC DA 70mm f/2.4 LTD lens: I purchased this lens second hand in 2013 and have used it little since. Lovely condition. Very clean body and glass. $380

SOLDSigma EX 10-20mm f/4-5.6 lens: I purchased this new in late 2013. Absolutely as new. Less than a dozen shots through it! $320 $300

All prices are in Australian Dollars (AUD)

I am very happy to accept Paypal payments, or for Australian buyers direct deposit is preferred.

Additionally, I am happy to ship worldwide. Australian shipping will be AUD $20 per item for registered shipping with tracking and insurance, or alternately, local pickup is available in Melbourne. International buyers please PM me for a shipping quote.

:D

Shipping discounts for multiple items apply.

Many thanks,

Luke.

Yes, this is true but I've promised myself to get off the buying and selling G.A.S. wagon, and only buy gear once I've saved up enough pocket-money to afford it. If after the purchase another piece of gear becomes redundant I can sell it and put the money back into the pocket-money pool, but I'm sworn off selling gear purely to fund another purchase. It's very difficult when deals like this pop up, but I'm trying hard!

Hi All,

We've returned from our holiday and had a wonderful time; for any Aussies considering the Gippsland Lakes region I can highly recommend it - especially aboard a cruiser! We were blessed with picture perfect weather every day and saw some beautiful locations!

Having said that, I think I'm more tired now than before we went away... I need a holiday to recover from the holiday! Add to that that Christmas is looming and I have my work cut out for me on that front, I have a lot of shots to process from the holiday and from our karate presentations this morning. As a result of the back log, I just don't think I'm going to be able to complete the challenge this month :(

I could probably get a few shots up, but I really don't think I'll have the time to do the commenting any justice which isn't really fair, so I'm going to pull out for the remainder of this month... sorry about that!

I look forward to returning in January or possibly February.

I'll keep checking your work with interest though, it's always lovely to see!

I'm off on a family holiday today... :D

We'll be spending five nights and six days cruising the Gippsland Lakes, so I'll be totally offline until Friday (or Saturday) next week.

I'll still be shooting when I'm away and will upload and catch up on comments upon my return, but I won't be able to put anything up or comment while we're away. I'm still a little behind commenting, but will endeavour to catch up before we leave.

Cheers,

Luke.

I know the feeling!

... Sometimes inspiration is tough. I find it very difficult to sit and think of something to shoot, unless it has appeared to me during the course of the day sans camera and I've made a note to come back to it or something interesting happens and I'm able to run and grab the camera on the spot. Usually I just wander with my camera and something invariably leaps out at me...
