The Future Q -- what's your take?

Kind of the opposite, sadly I have decided to sell off my Q and lenses. I was thinking about a selling the Q at Christmas but decided to hold off because it's such a dam fun camera, and I really do like it.

I was desperately hoping Pentax would release new lenses but alas no, the Q system sadly does not have the lenses (Only 4 with autofocus!) and I am not sure Pentax is fully supporting the system any more, so I not don't believe I will ever see the lenses with the focal ranges that I want.

I bought into the Q system for the ability to have a tiny camera with interchangeable lenses and it's great, but the 02 just makes it too big to pocket, and keeping the 01 on it all the time looses flexibility for me. I know people who love extreme telephoto appreciate the crop factor but I've never been in to that.

I am off to pick up a Panasonic GM1 with the 12-32, I certainly don't think it's better than the Q system I am under no illusion about that, the Q system is without doubt the most fun camera I have ever used, but I found the GM1 more pocketable than the Q + 02. and as pocketability/flexability was my main consideration in buying the Q, it's sadly never really fulfilled that for me (we all have different needs).

Now micro four thirds have a selection of lenses that are only slightly larger, and some even slimmer then the Q lens equivalents. I can get a similar setup. But ultimately I wanted a slim zoom and a 35mm pancake to suits my needs.

I suppose I am saying this out of frustration, as the Q was very nearly the perfect camera for me, just so dam frustrated the system never got the support it deserved.

Now no longer owning anything Pentax ill probably not be visiting this site that often, so ill just like to say thanks to all and keep rocking those Q's guys.

P.S you know as soon as I press post Pentax will release 5 new lenses and a new camera just to spite me :)

Why do the Q?

The Q's in a tricky position, It's a great camera but it's not getting the reignition it deserves. Its a wonderful concept that I still feel is let down by the lack of lenses compared to the competition.

And now the competition has lenses and body's the almost same size as the Q's, Pentax really needs to step up the game.

Pentax/Ricoh still seem tight lipped about the future of the Q I really hope it's not going to become a dead system, I know they have said they will support it, but
I cant even find any recent rumours let alone facts about its future.

Come on Pentax give us some love.

Lens Hoods

I think different manufactures use different bayonet mounts on the front of their lenses, I am pretty sure a hood from a 52mm Nikon lens will not fit on a 52mm Canon lens etc.

Also hoods are usually designed to work on specific lenses and can cause problems if you use them on other lenses i.e. if the hood it too deep it will cause vignetting or if the hoods too shallow it wont shade the lens so it will be pointless.

Saying that you can buy universal hoods but usually they don't works as well.

If I remember correctly TheCameraStoreTV did a rather good explanation about hoods on Youtube.

Interesting to read different peoples ideas how to process the images.

Here's mine.

Set camera to JPG.

Done :)

Would be nice to see some before and after shot's so idiots like me can see what they are missing not shooting RAW, I just never got around to shooting RAW from my Q!

I would truly love to see that. Although the IR sensor in the button grip might be problematic depending how it was wired.

For me I hated the button grip on the S-1.

I could hold my original Q all day and not even notice it, the S-1 felt so uncomfortable for my hands, it has lots of pointed edges and my fingers would get sore no matter how I held it.

I sent mine back after just a week. I was hoping they would make some type of snap on grip that could attach around the circle, but that never happened.

I suppose if you knew how much it squashed the image by you could get an image editor to stretch it back by the same amount.

It's a real shame Ricoh did not carry on with their GXR concept. They had a Leica mount for it, I cant imagine it would have cost too much to develop a K and a Q mount for it.

Now that would have been one hell of a flexible camera system!

Fast Q primes in our future?

More prime lenses would be truly wonderful, especially if they can keep them to around the same size as the 01. Although I am more of a zoom shooter something about the Q and the 01 feels so nice.
Hasn't there been a rumour floating around of a macro prime being developed?

CWRailman - Your right about the shock of the 08 price, for a ultra wide-angle zoom it's very well priced, but compared against the other Q lenses it does seem expensive.

Don't know if it's any coincidence but I've noticed SRS Microsystems who generally stock a lot of Pentax gear here in the UK and have always supported the Q are now running out of stock on almost all of their Q lenses and they are selling the 06 for the amazingly cheap price of £109!
Might just be awaiting new stock, or maybe they are clearing it all out for some other reasons.

Oh dear pratarok, you have really have cheered me up, I might ramble on but your just as bad as me :)

Fair enough we have a difference of opinion, and forums are great for having a rant, but your just becoming rude.

And for that reason I am not going to engage with you any more.

Woh Patarok, sorry I've rattled you so much!

Firstly, I did say I would like weather sealing, hell I would love a weather sealed Q, but I cant see it happening.

The PS3 comparison is a bit pointless as game consoles make a massive loss and make their money back from selling games and subscriptions. As far as I know the camera industry does not do that, which is kind of my point. Pentax has not spent much money updating the Q system, it's not that popular outside of Asia, so I doubt they will want to invest in producing weather sealed body's and lenses when it will up production costs for little gain. Of cause it will increase cost and production time, can they afford to do it?
Their rivals don't have it and Pentax needs to keep competitive if they want to compete, pricing is critical.

And you cant really compare it against their SLR's as there are loads of weather sealed lenses already out and have been for years.

As for your last sentence, the people on this site are a small but very passionate minority of the amount of Pentax cameras owners out there, Pentax needs to appeal to us its fans, but it also needs to appeal to the masses if they want to make money.

The weather sealing will probably never happen. The cost of weather sealing will rise the price too much as the Q is a cheap to manufacture camera it does not make sense.

I would like it, but seeing as none of my lenses are weather sealed there's no point and I am not going to re-buy the same lenses again, Nikon tried with the AW1 and it never took off. Like the Nikon, I can see people buying a weather sealed Q putting on the 02 lens then complaining when the sensor gets soggy.

The competition for cheap micro mirrorless cameras is hotting up, and all manufacturers are starting to produce tiny but advanced cameras.
The real strength was in the Q's lenses being so much smaller and lighter but they have pretty much lost that advantage with the new Panasonic and Olympus lenses. Pentax has not bothered to produce any more lenses and now people are going to the shops looking at the Pentax and no longer thinking it's that small.

For the Q to survive it need a feature set to go against the competition like the Panasonic GF7, Nikon 1 J5 or the Samsung NX500.

It's great news for Pentax/Ricoh, but I agree there has always been something a bit shifty about the TIPA results. I cant put my finger on it, I just can't seem to be able to trust their opinion.

I broke my 03 lens and now it works better!

I was trying out some time-lapse photography in my office last week with my original Q and my 03 using one of those ‘Super extreme sports it will never fall of EVER’ suction cups. I stuck it firmly on a nice clean window about 7 foot up and 20 minutes later it fell off, I tried it on a nice clean metal sheet about 3 foot off the ground and again it fell off!

To my dismay I noticed the lens is now a bit wobbly and no longer in focus, over the weekend I took it out and had a play and noticed in fact it does focus but now the focus ring needs to literally be set dead centre rather than the second tick on the left like most of them.
It’s now much easier to set focus on the lens, although I feel it may be a just tiny bit softer now.

Being dropped twice must have shook it up pretty bad, no idea how long it’s going to last, my Q seems no worse for it, although I noticed it shut itself down once but that has not happened again.

I agree changing the sensor size again would not be practical.

And completely agree on a 20mm f1! . Why not just go for it and go crazy, they could have fun releasing lenses under their 'Toy lens' range. How about a 50mm f0.95, if its a Toy lens they don't have to worry about the image quality as much and just have fun, if its cheap people will buy them.

Although I still wish Sigma would release their 60mm DN in a Q mount.

If you ignore the amount of mega pixels, smaller sensors still have less dynamic range and worse ISO performance, and they are important factors in image quality.
But I have a PC connected up to a 37" TV and when the screen saver goes off its starts flicking through my photos, and I honestly can't tell the difference between shot's taken with the Q or an SLR or a Mirrorless.

I do think Pentax needs to up the megapixels, as too many people turn their noses up at a 12 megapixel sensor nowadays, and that's going to start to damage sales. But I would rather have a decent 10 megapixel sensor with better ISO and DR!

Ricoh GR with the wide angle adaptor would give a very sharp 21mm field of view, plus its small enough to easily carry around.

I doubt it would cost much at all, most likely the lenses from the K and Q mounts work the same way, all they would be doing is connecting the contacts from one side to the other. Olympus, Panasonic, Nikon, Samsung and Sony all have adaptor mounts that can do this, and give full control, so there is no reason not to.

Size inst the issue, both Sony and Panasonic have proved you can put an electronic viewfinder in tiny cameras, and probably all the camera manufacturers have managed to put tilting screens in tiny a small camera at some point.

The Q's are cheap and it may add a bit of extra cost, but these features are starting to be excepted as standard, and for good reason.

Completely agree! If the tiny Sony RX100 or the thin Samsung NX mini can do it, there is no real excuse. It's better to have on and add and extra millimetre to the size then not have one.

If only they remade the 03 04 & 05 lenses to the quality of the 01. Although I am not really a prime shooter, I agree the Q system needs more small primes. Even the Samsung NX mini has 2 primes compared to the Q's 1! ( I am not counting the toy lenses).

These 'Loupes' are an interesting solution but they are huge! not very practical when walking around as it kind of cancels out the point of having a compact camera, but using with a tripod I can imagine they give people a good advantage.
