Is there any reason that I shouldn't buy a K-5?

I lived in suburban Detroit until the economy died in 2001. I did mostly industrial electrical work and commercial if I had to. Then I went to DC, ended up meeting my wife there and stayed for ten years. Then I got black listed by the contractors assoc due to an accident (slip and fall, blew up the bottom 3 discs ) so I came out to Vegas when the boom was on in 2007. That's when I decided I wanted to retire out here. I love the dry weather, less pains, except July and August although June was pretty hot this year too.

I have not as of yet. I've only been retired out here 18 months so far. I would really love to go to Utah and shoot the rock formations there. :-)

If you kit it up you should go with the 18-135 WR, it is sooo quiet. Also, for you 50mm equivilent the Sigma 30mm f1.4 is very nice, extremely fast and fantastic in low light, a bit heavy though.

You might add the DA 55-300 lens to your arsenal. Here is a link to a shot I took of a hummingbird with it reached out to 300mm.

Sigma lens damage

I have experienced some slight damage to a Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens I use on my K5. One of the threads for the lens hood on the "barrel" of the lens is seperating from the barrel and the hood no longer snaps into a "locked" on position. Can anyone suggest a repair facility in the Las Vegas area or close by to ship to? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Todd. I'm still concerned, don't get me wrong. I didn't have a focus gizmo so I just shot our license plate from different distances and different focal lengths with my Sigma 10-20mm and at differing F stops and checked "her out" on my software and still working fine (with fingers crossed). I'll run up to the camera shop later and get one of those focusing kits to check it out but, I think it's going to be fine. It only fell half the distance yours did and like I said it landed on the hood of my Sigma 30mm prime which I shot at a bunch of apertures the day of the mishap. I know 3 feet doesn't sound like much compared to your accident but it is a precision instrument. Also you said you had two mishaps and I also checked airbag deploymeny speeds and 8-14 mph is the typical deployment speed in a frontal impact. no way did it reach 8 mph (which I highly doubt you were going at when you hit the deer or I think you would have just used the brakes). And the other thing is it was a Nikon, JUST KIDDING. :) I've watched Youtube demonstrations of tablets getting dropped to see what height the screen broke. Was very interesting. Seems 5' and above was the limit. Not saying this is anything like that but that I'm pretty confident the plastic hood acted as a shock absorber as it was cocked. Even the hood did not get scratched, mishaped, nothing. I think for a while I will be shooting with this in the back of my mind but I have decided to keep my K7 as a backup should this develop into an issue.

canajuneh , I feel that's a bit like Apple users like my stepson. He loves Apple (but of course he doesn't want to cough up for their products) , and is a REAL fanboy. I love building pc's and overclocking the heck out of them. I don't care for Apple's proprietary requirements or their inflated cost. I got back into photography a few years ago. I used to use a Minolta X700 back in the days of film, and when looking at cameras was leaning towards a Canon or Nikon because I didn't see any Pentax's being offered in the stores around DC. A friend I made on a pc forum who taught me how to overclock suggested I look into the K7 which I did and purchased. I now find Pentax's products to be excellent pieces of equipment. When I held the other two brands I found what most do, they feel plasticy and cheap. Not so with the K7. That's really what brought me to the fold. I didn't know anything about digital photography a few years back but the FEEL of the Pentax fit my hand like a glove, and now I find that they can take a beating although I don't recomend it. :) I'm willing to bet that you would find exactly what you described about the toughness of C and N products.

The ironic thing is I was getting up to get some scissors to trim a display protector for the rear LCD .As I said, I will be doing my viewing and editing in the 2nd floor office I've created that has my rediculously, incredibly fast yet expensive desktop pc that I should be using for editing instead of at the dining room table.

James, thank you for your reply. You are the first person to post a positive incident and I appreciate it. That is exactly what I thought after my heart stopped racing but I had to prove to myself by doing some quick shooting. One tough rig. I was starting to think that the K-5's might be a questionable expenditure from reading the posts of all the issues people have had with these cameras. You and I are proof that they can take a licking and keep on ticking!!

Wow, I never thought of insurance. I might look into that, but the reason I posted this (as I cross myself looking skyward) is I had an incident today with my 5 day old K-5. It took a plunge off the dining room table onto a tile floor. I was scared to death as I picked it up anticipating at least some kind of damage. I saw that it landed I presume first on the lens hood of my Sigma prime 30mm and the hood was cocked. I turned it on and had an error reading the SD card. No broken glass or plastic was evident. I removed the card, the battery and the lens and put them back and turned it on and all was fine except for a speck of dust showing through the viewfinder so I did a shake and blew off the sensor and the dust was gone. Still not trusting what I saw I took it out and shot about 50 images through several lenses and all was good.I'm still claiming divine intervention as I can hardly believe how lucky, or blessed I was. I suspect that the Sigma lens hood took the brunt of the impact, Thank you Lord and Sigma! Since I have not gotten a favorable reply, I think both are responsible for my good fortune. I had just retired here to the Vegas area one year ago and pulled my K-7 out to shoot the beautiful scenery we have and was disappointed with the images I was getting hence the move to the K-5. I was going to sell th K-7 but I'm thinkong I will hang on to it just in case.I must admit I saw a world of improvement with IQ using the K-5' I really was starving for something to get me out of the house more often and since I don't gamble the awesome desert and mountains were begging me to photograph them. I can't reccomend anyone else try to duplicate what I have done. From now on I will be doing my viewing in the second floor CARPETED office!!

Thanks all for trying to help. I'm almost glad I'm selling the K7. I swapped out the kit lens for a Sigma and after shutting it down and reinstalling the kit lens the lens correction function is working. Very strange.

Pardon me Adam, what I am asking is how to ENABLE the lens correction funtion as it is "greyed" out in the menu and is not accessible. Should someone wish to purchase the camera with that function unavailable could it be something wrong with the firmware.

It's doing it with the kit lens in jpeg and I actually just noticed it. I haven't seen any real problems in my photos it's just bugging me as I'm wishing to sell the unit to a friend and wish to know how to correct this if asked to.

Hello fellow Pentaxians. I'm having a bit of trouble with my K7. For some reason I have set something that has blocked me out of the lens correction function in the menu of my K7. Does anyone have any idea of how to get it back? I feel so silly having to ask this as I just upgraded to a K5 and apparently I didn't learn how to operate the K7.:)
