Thanks for the support info, about where I would have guessed at price, and now I'm sure the K10 is not going to be repaired. I did play with the camera yesterday, turns out the reason I was getting black images has to do with the lens, my other lenses seem to work just fine, so I may have lost a 16-45 f4 in the fall as well. What really scares me is that I had my Tamaron 70-200 2.8 in my backpack bag on my shoulders when I went down, the focus sounds a little louder than normal, I'm hoping that it has something to with the focus motor in the camera body and not the lens. K30 is looking like it might be next camera.

Need Repair Advice

I havn't done my homework yet but thought I would make a post and see if anyone has experience and or advice. Using my K10 today with a Metz 48 flash mounted on it, managed to fall off the back of a golf cart. I'm fine but the K10 not so good. The flash seperated from the K10 by basiclly ripping the flash mount right off the top of the camera, leaving a gapping hole with some wires hanging out. The camera turns on, shutter still works, but images are completly black.
So my question is : Based on what I think the cameras value is (was), about $200 including grip, would a Pentax factory repair make any sense? or is it time to upgrade? are there any other repair sites to consider?

Try this if you've got ten minutes to kill, CNN has an article detailing image capture with different types of cameras, the story itself is not worth the time to read, but they have this interesting "test" to see if you can tell if an image was taken with a cell phone or an SLR. heres the link,,, I scored 5 out of 10 :(

Capture of Artist J. Seward Johnson sculpture "God Bless America", inspired by Grant Wood’s iconic painting “American Gothic.
Pretty cool if you get a chance to see it, currently its down at the Indianapolis fairgrounds, but it does travel the country.
With my limited PP skills this was the best I could do to recover the shadows and highlights, the blue shift in the sky was not intended but I kind of like it.

CC welcome and apreciated

Need help with K10

My K10 is acting weird.
I have the camera set on center point focusing. In the past, as expected, I only ever saw the center dot illuminate in the view finder, up until last week that is. Now I see the center dot as well as the dot above and below (3 dots in a row straight up and down).

I've tried for week to figure this out, been through the the manual twice, up and down the camera menus more times then I can remember.

Is it operator error? most likely. Here is what happened between the times it was a single dot and the now triple dot display. By the way the camera still appears to be center focusing.

I was hurridly changing lenses during a timeout of my daughters basketball game, each lens has a diiferent focus bias that I use with the K10 in debug mode. One lens requires much more than the other, so much more that I need to go to the AF adjust menu twice to reach the offset. It never fails that when I try to do this quickly I always inadvertantly end up in the wrong menu, cancel and start over. I think this time I may have mistakenly enabled or disabled a "feature" while in one of those menu screens.

I've switched the lenses back, no luck (didn't think it was hardware problem anyway)

I played with SEL focus, works great, works just like the manual says it should.

Go back to center point focus, three dots. ?????

Can anyone help?

Thanks Ash, shooting any lens wide open goes against everything I've ever read or experienced, this lens lets me get away with being a rookie .

Thanks PentX Girl, Those shiny and bright red uniforms certainly help, one more year of those middle school colors then its on to the high school team colors, white (home) and black (road), I guess I could PP them back to red:D

Thanks Stratman, when I first viewed that picture on the back of the camera, small screen, without my glasses, raindrops on the display, it looked really weird, much like it was filled with high ISO noise, I nearly deleted it.

Thanks roentarre, I appreciate the comments

All set for my first "under the lights" game only to have a heavy downpour force me keep the lens under my coat for most of the game. Didn't much like the shots at first, but they keep popping up on my screen saver and catching my eye. Thought they may interesting enough to post, let me know what you think, thanks.:)
Lens: Tamron 70-200 2.8

ISO:500, Aperture:2.8, SS:1/500, FL: 200mm
Lights just starting to take effect.

ISO:800, Aperture:2.8, SS:1/160, FL: 140mm
The rain made it nearly impossible for this lens to focus

ISO:800, Aperture:2.8, SS:1/160, FL: 70mm
What looks like noise in the upper left is still the rain coming down.

ISO:800, Aperture:2.8, SS:1/160, FL: 122mm
This might be a better shot if there was a soccer ball involved

News Country Flags in Profile - New Feature!

Adam, no complaints on the new flag "feature", but I might add that its implementation is not exactly "idiot proof".
I logged on today for the first time since Friday, blew right by the "global announcements" went straight to the forums, one click later and I was re-directed to the "you must enter the new field to your profile page" which then directed me to my profile. The default country appears to be United States, so as I look at my profile, nothing is missing. I went back and forth a few times doing this (never did read the global announcements) before simply "saving changes" (although I made none) , at which point I regained access to the forums. The problem was created by my haste in trying to get in some quick reading over lunch, but may I suggest changing the default country to "add/choose country here".

Nice shot. Years ago (before the highway was complete) my wife and I used to travel the connection from Rt17 to I90 through this area. The trip is much faster now, but I sure miss this detour through paradise.

She sorta likes the this shot, I agree the dress looks a little too "wind blown" but it does remind us of the weather that day, could have tied a string to the dress and flown her like a kite. I may try cropping it just above the shoes at the base of the dress

Actually, Yes that looks prettty good, thanks

The camera was set on Auto, but looking at the raw file I see that the temp was at 8K and the tint was +93. I adjusted these to 7750 and +66 but that didnt seem to effect the dress

I'll look into the sensor issue, that would be interesting to know. I've made subtle changes in the past with hue slider in PS, but wasn't sure if that was the correct tool for this job. thanks

No, I stopped using them after reading many of the posts on the forum discussing the negitive (as in "bad") effects of inexpensive filters. Oh, and BTW, I lied , this shot was taken with a 50mm 1.4 lens, I was having "self-induced" issues with the kit lens that day, and I also wanted the shallow DOF for these shots.

This is one of many shots taken of my daughter and a "purple/violet" prom dress. Upon viewing these pictures later I found that fabric of the dress, a very shimmery silky texture, had induced some very strange effects. The shots shown below were created from the DNG file by elements 3.0, but the jpg's created by the camera looked the same. First of all there seems to be a shift in color, in the first picture if you compare the dress to the color of his vest, they should be the about same, but the dress looks nearly blue in comparison. Secondly there are areas of the dress that produce a CA effect ( see second image) which look very bad when printed, but these purple fringed areas are what color the dress is supposed to be. These were taken with a K10D and the kit lens. Should I or could I have prevented this problem with filters and or a better lens ( though I've used this lens enough to say I didn't feel as if I was pushing it past its limits)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

AF Question

I generally shot the 50mm above 2, maybe not as high as 2.8, but I assumed close enough to disregard the difference in DOF.

Before I read your post my thoughts on the wider field of view with the 50 vs the 70-200 were completly opposite of yours, but suddenly it hit me, your right. I assumed that as I zoomed in I would be "increasing" the amount of area in my desired focal plane that was landing on the "dot" or focus point. Actually because of the size of the "dot" as I zoom in, those extra areas in my focal plane ( the other players) are moving outside the perimeter of the "dot". What is increasing in area is the contrasty stuff in the background. Does that make sense?
I think the next time I go I'll try shooting at different focal lengths just to see the effects.

Thanks Marc, I'm feeling alot better about the money I spent on this lens

AF Question

Thanks for all the input, I guess I didnt realize how many situations call for MF. I should order my split-prism this week.

This sounds like a good idea, I'll give it a try sometime. Before I bought the 70-200 2.8, I took all of my indoor Bbal with a 50mm 1.4, and I don't remember having any problems. I think I'll do this test comparing the two lenses. Thanks

I did a quick search before posting, I'll have to dig a little deeper

Oh, and she'll only accept that answer if its accompanied with dinner and flowers:o

not that cute? ouch

I see your point, I'll have to give it a try. One of the more important shots I missed that night (senior night) was a mid-court introduction of a graduating cheerleader and her Mom and Dad. From my angle, what I saw behind them from the mid -section up was very busy, lots of stuff to confuse the camera, from their mid-section down (towards their feet) was simply the court, I think the camera AF would have done fine with that advice, thanks

Mouth guard, one of the few that night to wear on, dad must be a dentist.

yup.

AF Question

Ok, first off I apologize for the poor attempt at humor in my previous post (free focus test), but I now ask for your opinions and assistance regarding some auto-focusing issues I am facing.
Question: If I use AF center focus, how large relative to the "red dot" or even relative to the frame should the object of my intended focus be for reliable auto focus? Does that focus area change depending on focal length of the lens? distance from the lens? I just recently bought a Tamron 70-200 2.8, while I have had no problems in the past with other lenses ( although under different conditions), I have really noticed with this lens that my subject must be nearly 2-3 times larger than the "red dot" to focus correctly. The lens focuses quickly, just not correctly. Based on the DOF calculations, its not that its close or back focused, its clearly focused on the objects directly behind my subject, with a DOF that correctly matches the calculations. The reason I posted the "free focus test" was that at one point I questioned whether the camera or lens had failed, but when I snapped that referee shot it was obvious the problem was clearly operator error. Here are a few more examples
EX1: I could focus all night long on subjects that filled the frame to this size,
EX2: These shots were hit or miss as to correct focus, notice the subject is much smaller that in EX1. More often than not I would be focused on the cheerleaders behind the players (try and explain that to your wife)
EX3: I had a heck of a time trying to focus here, am I expecting too much in this shot, the subject itself has very little change in contrast while the surroundings are filled with vertical lines. Thanks in advance for any advice

Free, no-cost focus target (not including the cost of admission).
Of the shots I took in the gym, the camera locked focus more quickly and accuratly on these, could it be the great HS gym lighting, or..... possibly the contrasting verticle stripes

K10D Battery Grip

I normally turn the grip off when not in use as I also have "mis-fired" with my palm. Once while at a soccer game, I handed the camera to my wife to hold "just for a second" (she is not a camera person) and she simply cradled it in her palms, sure enough I left the grip turned on and had the camera in continuous shot mode. Her facial expression was priceless as she rattled off 7 or 8 shots.

Thanks for the WB info, does that mean that the shots with the "rainbow" are throw aways?
