I don't have anything constructive to say, as it has already been said. I just wanted to say: lucky!
you will likely take tons of photos, Japan I'm sure is fll of wonderful details you'll want to capture. A laptop or portable storage device would probabyl be handy, ie a Wolverine or Hyperdrive Space

this probably belongs more in a general photography forum, but thought I'd share it here anyway. it was taken by an unknown photographer in 1937. this is an interior shot of grand central station in nyc, and one of my personal favorites. not only is it a good piece of history, but in photographic terms, it is simply gorgeous. |

I was taking some practice shots, and notice what appears to be a reflection of the computer monitor is over his shoulder. I wonder how that happened. Any theories? Image taken with aperture wide open. |

Earlier I made some posts about being indecisive. Well, today some free money (holiday bonus) came to me and I strolled on over to B&H and spent the mojority of it on the K100D, a Casio Exilim point & shoot, and a couple of UV filters. I'm still learning how to operate this little beauty, but here is a shot from my first test set playing with the camera. BTW, the image is not meant to be completely sharp, so no comments on the soft focus! Taken on my beloved manual 50mm/f1.4. Oh, and if you haven't been in, and happen to be in NYC, i highly suggest a trip into B&h. it's a candy store for photo/video lovers. |

thank you! the food was more of a quick 'snapshot' of my friend's 'food sculpture' than anything else, not much thought went into any of it as i hit the shutter, but i do like how it came out. :)

harder - how so? or just more rare?
i suppose it depends on where you post the images. in an art community one isnt nearly as likely to get those comments as it would in a more general photography community.

I know there has been a post asking about the K100 and the elements, but how about humidity? how much does that affect it (or any camera really)? I live in NYC and the air gets quite thick in the summer, it's so awful sometimes you can practically swim in it! I would still carry the camera in a bag and only take it out for pics, so I am thinking it shouldnt be too affected, right?

OK, here is my dumb question. I'm not clear on what it means when people say "stop the lens down". It might be something I already do, and just didnt know people called it that, or if it's something new!
But good to know I can use the camera for metering.

Thanks for the input. I only saw this just now. I am definitely getting the kit lens. i am just so frustrated with my digital "high end" p&s' limitations but also with how expensive film processing is. this purchase will allow me to marry both worlds.

has anyone used fully manual lenses on a K10 or K100 yet? when i brought mine into B&H I was told I would need to use an external light meter since those lenses can't communicate with the camera. I found you just set the aperture ring to the one you want and then enter in the shutter accordingly. the 'aperture' field in the lccd is blank since it cant read the lens. then you focus and snap the pic. kind of like how i did it on the K1000 but without a meter. anyhow, has anyone done this with a handheld meter or just bracketed? me, i tend to have a vague idea of what the shutter/aperture should be and i will probably just bracket (i'm just a hobbyist/experimenter, not pro). when I purchase my camera (still have yet to decide) I will have kit lens to learn all the auto aspects, and 50mm/1.4, 28mm/2.8 manuals.

this doesnt really answer the question, but hell, i love the softness produced by wide apertures for artistic/experimental reasons. they are great for producing dreamlike images.

I am NOT a wedding photographer by any means, I am a hobbyist who mainly does abstracts or experimental photography. My cousin got married recently and I decided to take some pics, to offer something different than what the aunts, uncles, cousins, etc would be giving her (snapshots or portraits of different combinations of posed family members). I think they turned out good, considering this is not my strength and my light meter was dead and I guessed all the exposures.
Taken with Fuji 400H film on a Pentax K1000, a few samples:

I strolled into B&H on my day off today, to torture myself by playing with the K10 and K100 models. Well, my other purpose was to see/get a feel for these cameras in person and try to make a decision. Anyhow, I STILL can't decide! I brought my SMC-M 50mm/f1.4 lens and both models were awesome. I am young and poor, have rather small hands, and megapixels arent my concern, so K100 sounds like the better choice, but I can't decide how much I really feel I need the weather and dust resistant features. I would like to go back to carrying my camera with me daily to capture everyday observations, but I'm not sure if the extra ~$400 is worth it. My other worry is that I might want to move on to K10 in a year or two, but on the other hand, I have been using my good old K1000 forever and never felt a desire to upgrade in the film world. Opinions or advice, anyone? Thanks!

How is the kit lens on the K10D? I prefer primes but won't be able to afford other lenses for awhile once I make this purchase. The pancakes look lovely but they are too expensive, and I would rather stick to Pentax lenses only. I already have the SMC-M 50mm/f1.4 and plan to purchase a SMC-M 28mm/f2.8 while they are still cheaply available on ebay.

my budget is much more on the K100 rather than the K10, but the weather and dust resistance would be really good. decisions, decisions.

thanks for all the responses. megapixels aren't an issue with me, I think might go for the K10 for the weather and dust resistance! i am going to iceland next summer so that will be handy.
by "mathematic" i mean anything technical, like reading histograms. a friend of mine is a scientist, and recently got into photography, and it's so interesting to watch her post-process using technical prowess.
i don't exactly have any budget for either model, since i just got myself a shiny new imac, but i will find a way to obtain a new camera.

Hello all. I am new here. I am trying to decide if I really should get the K10 coming out, or get a K100. I am going to wait until reviews (professional and user) come out of course, but I wanted to get your opinions.
I am an amateur and currently use a Pentax K1000 and a Canon S2 IS, which means my experience is either with full-manual film or higher-end point and shoot digital. I have yet to invest in a dSLR because I love using my manual focus 50mm/f1.4 lens. Now I see this camera that accepts my favorite lens that will also allow me to save money on film, AND it has weather and dust resistance. I am more of an art photographer - I shoot in available light, usually abstracts and landscapes. I hardly ever do portraits or action. I avoid using flash whenever possible because I don't like how it looks most of the time. To see a sample of what I do, my website is at http://potatostar.com.
How much more complicated is it to use dSLR? Is it basically combining the knowledge I already have? I am a visual person and have never been able to do post-production and exposures mathematically, I just eyeball my adjustments in Photoshop.
