Of course, I did mean 1/8 to 1/4, had a couple of beers at the footy. And I missed your edit in your earlier post where you explained that. I reckon I've got it. I'll get hold of the yn 560 ii, practise, practise some more, then some practise until I don't even need to think about it. Cheers guys.

Excellent. That makes a lot of sense to me, and backed up what I'd like to do in practise. If I adjust the aperture and ISO to my preference, then my only variable would be flash output depending on distance.

One more question I'd just thought of, if anyone could answer. Is the power output from a flash constant with an f-stop? For example, if I were shooting at f8 and stepped down to f5.6, would it be as simple to change the flash output from 1/8 to 1/4, or is this a whole different variable?

Rondec,

Great captures, fantastic colours and very tastefully done hdr. Welcome to the club. I love the details in the corn (?) The buildings in the background and the stump in the first shot. Fantastic composition and good post work.

@jeztastic,
Thank for the words. The fill flash was hard to get right on this day. It was a very bright cloudless spring day at about 2pm. Not the best conditions to try to show some mood. The bear is back light and I'd used a diffused flash to fill the bear. There were some shots with the bear more exposed, but to me they looked wrong because the bear was too harshly lit as the flash was far too close and far too strong even with a small octagonal softbox on it. I may try this concept again when it's more overcast, being in Melbourne won't be too many hours away.

Thanks maxfield, I did look at the Metz, or maybe even one of the previous iterations, which are quite a bit cheaper. I think I would prefer to have the adjustable power on hand. I'd like to be able to very quickly take a second shot if the exposure is not quite right. I hadn't thought about using the aperture. Not being experienced flash, and I've only used it on still subjects, I expose for the ambient light then set the flash to full or half and just keep moving it forward/back til it's correct. I was hoping to use similar, but adjusting flash power rather than distance. I would hope I'd pretty quickly know which flash power to be using.

Elliot,

That was a very fast reply. I had a look at a video of this one in action, I reckon this would be perfect. It seems to be highly recommended by a lot of people, I think the adjustments would work well, thank you.

Are these generic flashes, or do I need to get one specific for Pentax?

I'm definitely getting one from ebay. In the stores in aus they are $175!

Hey guys,

I know very little about flashes. I would like a decent flash to use off camera manually, but something which can have the power adjusted manually and quickly. I've a friend who wants some shots in his bar of bands and patrons. I'm thinking the simplest setup would be camera in one hand (k-5) and hand held flash in other with some sort of diffuser (not decided which type yet). I'd like to be able to quickly adjust the power output of the flash depending on the distance of the subjects, maybe a dial or sliding thing. I've tried reading reviews, but most discuss the automatic benefits of the flash and don't mention how manual adjustments are made. I own a pair of cactus v5 and a sigma 610 (not super) that only has half and full power settings, not the range I need.

Which flash would be best for me? Oh, the cheaper the better, of course!

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Disco, love the red/orange/brown. That's not the colour cast from the nd filter?

I've tried to do something different here. I've tried to express some sadness with an unusual subject. C/c welcome.

Finally, I'm also a member to this club.

Here's a one from this evening. It was delivered too late to be out during the day today, so I'm really tempted to give work a miss tomorrow, and spend some time with this beauty.

Ubiquitous Melbourne over the yarra shot (minor pp and straighten the verticals in LR)

It's nothing real special, just out trying to get used to the focal length. I think this lens may really help to improve my photograph. Composition is very unforgiving with this wide FL, even a slight movement of the camera makes a huge difference.

My efforts,

A couple from a trip to the hills:

and a different perspective, I used a 52mm reverse ring for these 2, 18mm and wedged the aperture open with a piece of card.

This is a close up of the illustration on an AU$50 note.

@panoguy Quite agree, it's very far from perfect and a lot still needs to be done, but it's very impressive what can be done very quickly. I'll check out that web page whenever I get some more time, there certainly seems to be a lot of information there!

I just tried out this new feature and it's quite incredible.

Here's an example of a room a friend needed photos for. It's 3 images aligned and blended. This is just using the kit lens @ 18mm, so it isn't wide enough to capture the entire room.

The distortion in the shot is not really ideal, and would normally take a very long time in altering the image to straighten the lines.

This is the shot after using the adaptive wide angle filter, only taking a couple of minutes work.

I find this result amazing given the effort the user needs to put in. It's just drawing a few lines!

This guy has done a very simple tutorial for vertically stitched images, but the same principles work for horizontal too, except I found the results best by not locking a layer for the others to be aligned with, but let photoshop choose the alignment. This would probably be better done with straight on pictures.

@Joe.penn Thank you, your comments are very flattering. I'm so hyper critical about my shots, I've never really been comfortable in displaying them. You've given my confidence a nice boost.
@Ron It's Aussie rules footy, played on an oval roughly 165m in length and 135m in width. Compare that with a soccer pitch which is 105m by 68m, it's huge! Also, thank you for the encouragement.

I know these don't compare to any of the shots on this thread, this was my first time out shooting sports. I Think I've learned a lot from my first time out.

Only have a sigma 70-300, but kept it around 200mm, it gets very soft after 200mm. A footy field is very large, and 200mm only gets you so far, so a lot of action is missed from the other side of the field. I think I'd need to more concentrate on the emotional side of the sport, it seems these are the better photos, the celebrations, or the disappointments involved.

Put in the one with the rain, not because I like the shot, but to show the K-5's capabilities. It was very, very dark. There was a storm approaching and most of the crowd left soon afterwards, but I think the shot is still usable.

Hey,

Saggsy from Melbourne here.

I've been reading this forum for probably over a year now and have learned soooo much from you guys. Thank you. I find with the knowledge and experience and immense talent on here, I don't have much to contribute, but every day I learn.

I began (photography) life with the k-x, my life lovely girlfriend sent me on a beginners evening course, and now I'm hooked. I now have a k-5 paired with the 18-55 kit lens, a sigma 70-300 and a sigma 50 1.4. So some more basic lenses, which cover most of the bases, and I'm getting better results every time shoot.

I'm looking to take the next step up. The da 15mm limited and the fa 77 limited are in my sights. I'd probably have both right now if Pentax hadn't changed their us pricing policy, lenses are a touch overpriced comparitively in Aus.
