Thanks Zafar. I just was just reading about focus peaking in live view. I always just assumed it was a lazy way to not use the view finder so I never bothered with it.

Thanks Adam. I will check that out.

Edit: After reading it. I'm by no means saying I even have the issue, was just curious as of what I could do to make sure I didn't have this problem. Might look into making a target or something to test it.

Looking to take that step from beginner

Please excuse the topic jumps as it went from me asking a topic in PP to a topic about further my photography. So I apologize if this is in the wrong section since I've moved it around a few times before deciding to just post it here.
This topic jumps from asking about proper Post Processing to growing as a photographer and trying to find your niche to asking how to achieve photos worth selling.

I'm still a beginner in terms of shooting and PP. I bought my k-30 when it came out last summer and used it every day or edited every day to keep working and growing daily. With picking up more jobs in November I lost time and eventually stopped shooting / editing all together until recently. I still remember some stuff in PS but I'm far from knowing every must do / basic editing technic.

What editing is a must do? I shoot in raw so I play with the images in the raw editor for PS (the most recent edition).
How do you know when an image is "done" and achieve PP rivaling that of top images.

From temp/tint to exposure-black balance and even clarity. How much is too much? How much isn't enough?
Levels, sharpness, curve, hue/sat, clarity, bright/contrast, histogram balancing. How does it (and then some) all tie into making the image what you desire?

Looking back at old edits and file info of how I've taken shots I see things I've done wrong and how to shoot better and edit more effiently. I'm trying to take myself to the next level from just someone with a camera pointing and shooting to get lucky shots to someone who knows how to take the shots of the scene/subject that they desire. I've done a lot of reading online from tutorials on how to edit to articles of different technics and what not. And my next thing is trying to go from always shooting in AV to M. I used to try shooting in M when I was borrowing a Nikon d60 before my K-30 and even though the exposure bar would be balanced the images would be burned out or blown out so I turned to just shooting in aperture mode for most of my shooting other than astro.

I love shooting astro photography as I've been doing that as to slowly get back into the swing of things. I was only using some image stacking software in PS to stack the images and attempting to make the images acceptable. I have a terrible problem with light pollution so I'm un able to get jaw dropping images of the Milky Way and was just reading in a post about a program called Iris that supposedly takes care of light pollution. But I dont know of this works with stacking images in making startrails at all or if this only works in single shots.
I've been trying to figure out what iso is best. I used to shoot at 100 @10s but reading into it now looks like I should be trying 15s @ 800-1600 for startrails. I also read in a thread here talking about iris to also shoot a frame or two with the lens on to balance out Dark Frame Reduction which I've never done before and I'm sure there's things out there I dont know about or just aren't doing right.
I also have a celestron telescope that I bought a t mount and k mount adaptor for but when I went to use it last fall I realize I'm missing a piece to allow the camera to focus and I'm not sure if I need to buy an actual lens piece or what.
I also I'm curious if anyone here has the Pentax GPS1 and uses it for long exposure astro photography. How long of exposures can you do and is it worth purchasing?

I mostly shoot landscape / macro and looking back on my old images to edit I noticed my attempts at framing and "thirds" was spotty at best. Some things were "okay" or lucky and others needed framed a different way or some of the image cropped. Be it too much to a side or space on the bottom of the subject that needed to be gone. Or even the guilly hotizen down the middle of the frame. This also includes astrophotography and trying to find a suitable foreground.
I would like to start working with people but I'm not sure how to pose models and convey to someone how to pose. These would be friends an family willing to work with me but I'm not trying to waste their time or mine with having no idea what I'm doing.

I guess all in all. I'm trying to improve from just the guy with the camera pretending to take good photos ad wasting his time taking them all and attempting to edit them into something decent. I'm at the frustrated from overload on where to pick back up from and how to grow as a photographer stage. I want to better myself and my photography with what spare time I can get. But I'm unsure where to start and how to challenge myself without looking at images and seeing them as intimidating. There's so many talented people out there with beautiful images that are inspiring that make me try getting that compisition in camera or PP edit later that night that makes it intimating to try and sell or even post online for critiques.
There's nobody that's a bigger critic than yourself and I way to over come that to post some images I have to see what I can do better without just hearing how awful it is, when I'm already saying that to myself to begin with.

I apologize for such a long post. It started as a simple thread to better myself in PP and a thread about astrophotography to all of this. I know the post jumps all over the place and is vague at times as writing this on down time at work probably wasn't the best time to ask for help hah. Also wasn't sure if making a bunch of different threads for each subject was smart or this whole thing
I thank who ever reads and is able to give me some advice on how to move forward and grow as a photographer.

I bought my K-30 with the 18-135mm lens

My question is: How do you know if your camera/lens is front/back focusing? Is there a true perfect focus/ sharpness?

Not sure if I would get my question better answered in the k-30 or lens section.

Thanks everyone! I'll definately get the kit along with the smaller rocket blower. If these don't do the trick, I'll have to take it somewhere.

Thanks jax! A big help like always. :) I hope the rocket blower takes care of whats on it, what bothers me the most is this hair looking dust that looks like this ~. It shows up in every light / solid color image.

Any advice on how to load this image to show this gnarly piece of dust?

I rather not touch the sensor as long as I don't have to. I'm still a little cautious about the pentax cleaning swab thing mentioned above, but if it works I can't really argue.

So to be sure I should just buy the rocket blower and a dust brush? Does the rocker model matter? I see there are different sizes. And as for the sensor dust brush what would be a good brand that I'll know will work? I rather pay more for something that will work than something that wont // something that will ruin the sensor.

I've been putting up with the dust on my k-30 sensor for about as long as it's been out, finally fed up with all the ruined shots because of it. So I ask of the comminuty, what is the best way to clean off the dust? I didn't want to just go ahead and cotton swab it or air dust it and potentially ruin the beautiful sensor. I'm uploading an image to show most off the specs on the sensor. Any and all advice is graciously appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Image uploaded. The top left one drives me insane.

Camera Bag

I was orgingally looking at a lowpro I think the 250? or 350? I can't remember. I just want something for My k-30 with the 18-135 and my k1000se with a few lenses. Of course to be able to have filters, cleaning, film, battery packs things of that nature.

I've been using a shoulder bag (nikon) which holds the k30 and the filters and I have an over shoulder for the k1000 with a bunch of lenses and film crammed into it.
I like the accessibility of the shoulder bag to just grab filters and change them out (and access 1/2 future lenes) but having to carry two shoulder bags gets in the way of switching lenes for the k1000.
My friend hates his backpack and idk if a "messenger" bag will solve what I want to do/carry.

Screen on while shooting

Why doesn't the k30 have a senser to detect that your face is up against the camera? Is this something Pentax have never done? Upgrading from a Nikon D60 this camera is tri-fold better, but it t's me off when I'm in low light and I have the screen on and I'm un able to see through the view finder until I click the shutter to focus. Is there any setting to fix this? or is this the reason pentaxians love the top lcd screen? I've never got to use one but I can see its use now. :hmm:

Interval Shooting

I noticed you can't use it in blub mode which is a bummer but oh well. I'm not sure if this has something to do with the cameras way to prevent over heating but... I set my camera up to do astrophotography and have even tested it, at 30" at 999 shots, it will shoot 50 of those and stop. I'm able to watch it and keep telling it to re run the interval but only last the 50 shots for 25ish minutes. Its not like the battery dies or turns off, it just...stops? Its a major upgrade from my Nikon D60 and having to shoot every single 30" shot but if it gives the option to shoot "1000" shots at 30 seconds why doesn't it? I'm curious if anyone has tested this or will and can give me an answer. It just sucks having to set a timer and go out and reset it ever 20 minutes.

Thanks in advance.

PSD files on windows

I use widow gallery to browser through pictures for viewing when choosing what photographs to edit. The computer Im currently using Photoshop on doesn't have excess to the Internet and I'm trying to find a way to view psd files. On another computer when I had the CD6 beta I was able to upgrade windows gallery and view psd files but on this computer it won't let me do the update for it without an Internet connection. I haven't found any other fixes online other than codec files that cost 20 bucks. Any advice or suggestions of better programs to view photographs is appreciate.

Thanks

Lamp issue with 18-135

I've noticed in low light situations the lamp light at curtain focal lengths (i dont know off hand atm with my 18-135) it blocks part of the lamp light and creates a black circle in the lower left corner of the viewfinder. Which in return correct me if I'm wrong because I didn't play with it much affects the AF system with AF spots on the left of spot center.

Any one else notice this? Or have this issue with other lenses blocking the lamp?

Thank you everyone for your responses. I remember reading how to do it and tested it on the camera and tested the method without film in it and every time it would advance to the next frame. I dont know if this was because it wasn't loaded? or if I was doing it wrong (I'm sure the latter).
I'll try what pez mentioned and see if that does the trick.

I currently have 2 pentax 35mm bodies, A3000 and K1000Se. The A3000 was my fathers and "A" mode probably appealed to him back in the 80's, I prefer the manual use of the k1000. In the manual for the K1000 it tells you how to do double exposures but at the cost of losing the next frame or completely screwing up. I haven't tried this yet in fear of wasting a roll/potential shots. I just want to know if there is an easier way to do this on the k1000 (any tips/tricks?) or if there is a camera that would make double exposure taking a lot easier. I noticed when rewinding the film in my k1000 as apposed to the A3000, it doesn't show you how far you've rewound to say I've gone from frame 24 to frame 23 again or even being able to rewind to frame 1 and shoot the roll again.

Whats the best way to go about it, take 1 shot "rewind" take it again. Take all the shots, rewind and reshoot the roll again. I'm open to any advice to try out!

Thank you everyone, you all have been a BIG help. I like the idea of the 18-135mm and maybe getting the 55-300mm a little later down the road. I see it this way, the 18-135 is about 150 bucks cheaper. If I get it with the k30 and if by some chance I don't like it I can also sell it and potentially get the 18-55 and 55-300.

Thanks again everyone! last question I can think of, 135mm is it plastic or metal? I've read the DA-L's are plastic bodies and I can say that doesn't sound too appealing. I don't mind it with my Nikon, but I do prefer my metal 35mm lenses.

Thanks for the comment. I was thinking the 18 55 WR and 55 300 but as mentioned about sounds like the 18 135 out classes? So I'll have to do my research on the lens review section.

So the 18-135 kit would be the best way to go? I'll have to check out the lens section when I get a chance. Thanks for the info
