Why I'm glad I have a Pentax System

Well you're wrong about Sigma - they're offering plenty of K-Mount lenses.

Their current version is the 70-200 f2.8 APO EX DG OS HSM - but at $1409, I'm very glad I don't need OS - and that the non-OS version was still for sale.

A few weeks ago I wanted to buy a 70-200 2.8 with HSM/USM - I was again really glad I chose Pentax as my system 41 years ago.

I found that digitalcamerawholesale still had the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG HSM Macro for Aus$549 ! But only in Pentax Mount. No, digitalcamerawholesale are not grey importers.

The EX indicates it's their premium range and DG indicates it's Full Frame capable !

They would have sold more of these lenses, if they'd correctly put them in the zoom category rather than fixed focus !

If I'd owned a Canon or Nikon system, I would have paid a LOT more for equivalent OS functionality -

Canon - Sigma Lens 70-200 f2.8 APO EX DG OS HSM $1409
or Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM $2769

Nikon - Sigma Lens 70-200 f2.8 APO EX DG OS HSM $1409
or NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II $2869

The lens is still available but for $599 - still an amazing bargain.

Since I have a good set set of lenses for my K20D, I was elated when I read that the K-01 had an excellent APS-C sensor and I could use the full image and full functionality of all my lenses - and not need OS/VR lenses. Sure, the K-01 body is on the large side - but below are the disadvantages of having a small mirrorless body.

After reading about the Nikon FT-1 adapter that allows SOME Nikon DSLR lenses to be used on Nikon Mirrorless cameras, I was ecstatic that I haven't invested in Nikon lenses.

Here are some quotes from Extension Tubes, Bellows, Adapters - Nikon FT1 Mount Adapter (Tested) - SLRgear.com!

"The adapter . . is available now for around $200" - and it doesn't even have any glass in it ! So I've saved $200.

"Nikon warns that when attaching a lens weighing over 380 grams (around 13 oz), the user should not lift the camera / adapter / lens combination from the camera, as potential damage to the lens mount could result" - so I don't risk breaking my camera when using the 70-200 or 50-500.

" autofocus will work, where it will not work with lenses which are not AF-S compatible" - all my AF lenses work.

" the camera operates at the selected aperture, so if you are stopped down to ƒ/8, you may find the image quite dark, and a little difficult to focus, as there isn't the tight depth-of-field delineating where focus begins and ends. The solution for this is easy - just stop up to the widest aperture, focus, and then stop down to take the photograph." - no worries, I won't miss out on any action shots doing that !!!!

K-01 = Faulty disaster?

If the AF Drive Motor is broken, the camera will just keep on supplying power and wait for the lens to achieve focus.

The camera will only display MF if the switch or the lens is telling the processor not to drive focus.

TV sets used 20,000 volts to accelerate electrons toward the screen - LCD display use 5 volts. Chalk and cheese.

Then how come the replacement body worked perfectly ? Is it impossible to accept that a Pentax product was faulty ?

My early testing is showing a similar focussing fault - I'll post when I've had a chance to do definitive testing.

I'm amazed Pentax didn't learn from what made Nokia grow huge - the 5510 was the first phone with interchangeable covers and people bought it in droves and it sold for years.

It would have been easy for Pentax to make the K-01 colour panels user-changeable. Look at the incredible range of iPhone covers and you can imagine what sort of covers photographers would be producing for the K-01 a few weeks later.

Best price for K-01 in Sydney

On Monday I went in to digidirect.com.au in King St Sydney, planning on buying a K-01 Body with Sigma 17-50. A search had shown them to have the best price, although ryda did match them, but had no lenses.

They didn't have the Body-only in stock in black, so they offered me the kit with 40mm for $728, normally $754. That's only $57 more than their Body-only price - so I've ended up with the 40mm kit. This is $51 cheaper than the digitalcamerawarehouse kit !

Then came the second pleasant surprise - they actually had the Sigma 17-50 EX DC OS HSM K-mount in stock !

Then the third surprise - they were still selling it at the old price of $659 ! This is the price digitalcamerawarehouse charge for the Canon, Nikon and Sigma versions - but the Pentax mount costs $731 ! I assume this is because dcw still have stock at the old price for Canon, Nikon and Sigma.

The great thing about digidirect is is that you can actually try out the lens and camera in store - digitalcamerawarehouse's policy of not starting up the camera in store has to be unique among camera stores.

So far I'm very happy - it even autofocusses at 250mm in good light using the Pentax(Tamron) 18-250.

I'm busy preparing to work on the Wild Endurance 100 Marathon so I won't be posting any photos until Monday - but this weekend will be a great opportunity to try out the low-light capabilities - the event continues from Saturday morning until Sunday.

K-01 Firmware update wishes!

I find it hard to believe there aren't any User Modes in the K-01.

The Canon G12 compact camera has 2 User Modes directly accessible from the dial

User Modes COULD be added in a Firmware update if Pentax are serious about this being an enthusiast camera.
