Using my K-r with Tamron 90mm

Well, I am glad you asked that question. That spurred me to go back and mess with the A setting. I thought it was just stuck at f32, but then I realized that you have to turn the dial to change the aperture. I didn't realize really what the A was for, not having any instructions and not being very techie, myself. Well, I feel like a dummy, but hey my problem is solved! Thanks so much! Now I can go enjoy my new lens!

Using my K-r with Tamron 90mm

I just bought a Tamron 90mm f2.8 DI used, but from a reputable company with a 30 day warranty. It did not come with an instruction manual. The lens appears to be perfect and the aperture blades seem fine. In the camera's Manual Mode the lens appears to work perfectly, although the screen shows F-- when I choose an aperture on the lens and the EXIF data shows up as f0. All the other modes on the camera revert to Aperture Mode when this lens is on. But in Aperture Mode or any of the other modes, the camera seems to choose the aperture itself, rather than using the aperture I choose on the ring. It doesn't matter if I set it on f.28 or f32; it will usually use f2.8, although occasionally it has used f8. The screen shows F-- but the EXIF data show up whatever aperture the camera chose to use. Also when I set the aperture ring to "A" it will only use f32. I haven't had any trouble with the kit lenses on my camera, but I'm kind of a newb so any help you can give me would be appreciated. I don't live anywhere near a store that carries Pentax.

Using manual focus lens

Okay, thanks, this is very helpful. Actually it is an f2, not a 2.8. It is an SMC Takumar 1:2/55. I bought an old Honeywell Pentax SP1000 at an auction a few weeks ago for $5 and this is the original lens that was on it. It's certainly a lot more trouble to use than the kit lenses, but it gives a nice sharp picture when I do it right. :)

I have a K-r and I recently acquired an old 50mm Takumar f2.8 M42 lens that I have been playing with. I have figured out that to get a sharp focus you must get the little green hexagon to show up in the viewfinder. This works like a charm until I get past f8. Then the hexagon refuses to show up and there is no way to focus except by eyeball and sheer luck, which usually doesn't turn out too well for me. I've tried all sorts of settings and combinations to get it to work, but it will not. Is this normal and is there a way to work around it?

Oh thank you! No. 16 is my son, so I have had a lot of practice on him! A lot of them were softer than I would like. I don't quite know how to always get them super sharp yet. Just need more practice, I guess!

Well I was blessed with an overcast day, and I used many of your suggestions. I bought a reflector which was invaluable for the individual shots and the group shots turned out okay. Not perfect, but not bad for a first try and the kids were all pleased. I posted an album here if anyone would like to take a view: FHE Swim Team goes to the Prom | Facebook Thanks everyone for your advice! It helped me so much!

Thanks everyone, for the helpful advice! It was exactly the kind of help I was looking for. I feel a bit more confident, now, and I will let you know how it goes. In the meantime, I have a couple of weeks to practice. :)

It is really a group shot. It's his swim team, actually. They are going as a group, not as dates. I might do some small groups (the girls, the guys, etc) but I'm not too worried about those. It's just the big group that I'm concerned about. I don't want them too dark against a dark background. I don't want to highlight them too much with flash. I don't want to end up with awful shadows on their faces. I'm not sure how high I can bump up the ISO without it becoming too grainy. I'm not sure reflectors would be very helpful for a group that large. And I know they are going to be hyper and I'm going to have to work quickly.

I've been asked to take some prom pictures for my son's friends in a couple of weeks. We're doing it at a local historical site which has gardens, trees, and old historic buildings. I've scouted out the area and taken my son and daughter out there for some test shots. But I'm going to be doing a group of about 16 kids and I just need some advice about settings, posing, etc. I have a Pentax K-r and a Mecablitz 50 Af-1. I have the two kit lenses and an old 50mm manual prime. That's it as far as equipment. The shoot is going to be at 3:30-4:40 (can't change it) and the sun is pretty harsh and high. I've looked at shady areas. Most are dappled and the ones that aren't are really deep and dark. I wanted to use f8 for depth but it's giving me a really slow shutter speed in deep shade. I am not sure using my flash will work for that many people although it seems to help with just the one or two people that I've done test shots with. I am a beginner and I'm not getting paid, and it's only a prom, but I would like to do a good job and gain some experience. If anyone has any helpful advice, I would be most appreciative.
