Thanks all, good advices here !
I think the lens performs well at any focal lenght... but I will have to try a 400-500ish as suggested
So now I have to test the bodies, the FL, test what the CPL filter can do or not... How this will affects filling the frame to leave room for the corona...
Hopefully here will be sunny days without coulds coming, because they are not frequent nowadays... (especially during the weekends )
Good idea trying to LV Focus peaking zooming on the sun spots !
So far, I was testing with older bodies I had (I was a bit scared of damaging the more recent, so I tried first with K100d, K10D), and none had Focus Peaking... Now I am confident, Next time I'll try with the K-1/K-3
My filter holder is a 6"-to-7" 28ga galvanized increaser (like this) That I'll fix on the lens hood with some foam (i had to do that, because the filter I bought is too large :(... I bought a 135mm diameter, but my bad I didn't realized :asleep: 135mm was for the FIlter diameter... not outer diameter (OD), so with the frame, it makes the OD 170mm. Anyways, the way my DIY mount works is great. I can easily remove the front filter for the full eclipse time... (I'll try to make some photo to share asap)

Interesting thread...
Can you explain how you set the focus ?
I guess in LV with the Focus Peaking aid would be the best ?
But for those camera body that don't have LV,how would you proceeed, for example with an older K10D (I might want to try also with a CMOS sensor to compare)
On my side, The gear I intend tu use is below
Lens : SMC FA*250-600 F5.6 @ 600mm Filter thread is 112mm... Not many options on the market, and pretty expensive. I chose an over the top filter. I plan to use this cheap solar filter bought on AliExpress. They say it's like Bard film is that the sun looks red via its, Via traditional Bard film looks like gray. It's Membrane Lens PET-coated / Aluminum Foil Film... Hope it is all right for that type of photography.
However, I had questions about the possibility to use the Drop-in case for a solar Filter ? Does that exists ? Is it recommended ? (I read that the solar filter, whatever model, should be the 1st element facing the sun for complete safety.)
Anyways, I saw some example of Solar ND 100000 Drop-in filter exists, so wondered if I could use and find one for my lens... Should be much cheaper than a large 112mm ring filter.
Otherwise, I also wonder if I would put the CPL filter in the Drop-in case ? It notmally reduce light by 1 stop... Would the Polarized filter help in any way for getting more details ? I havent heard anything about that yet...
I have constructed a DIY holder to hold the solar filter on top, and as close as possible to the front element. The distance between the two is about 2-3 cm
Body: Not sure which one I'll use yet... K-3 III or a K-1 / K-1 II... and the K10D. I guess the more reach the better? (so, 600mm*1.5 = 900mm with the crop factor magnification).
I plan to use AV mode with Bracketing 3 or 5 steps ± 1.3 EV.
Shutter speed I have in mind is 1/1600s, ISO as low as possible.
Sturdy Gitzo Tripod and Benro S8 Video Head.
My first test with that setup and the solar filter seems to work ok, but it was a bit cloudy and I wasn't getting sharp images.
So many questions still to answer here...
I need to make more tests.

Yes! Agreed!
It's not an easy lens to play with, but I get a reward each time I am using it... especially with the FF camera K-1 or K-1 Mark II, it is when it delivers the most beautiful shots !
You got it... One piece of robot for you ! (never-mind about that... It's local expression in QC... )

Yes we were lucky.
Same thing here in southern Québec, south of the St-Lawrence River, not many were reported in the last 2 years...

Thanks...
Actually, I had trouble with AF using that 2x TC... I checked in LV, and AF didn't really had the subject nailed, so I switched to MF in LV.
This is definitively not a big year for Snowies again (like I said, I didn't see any in our area last year...
Apparently, I heard that 2 years ago (or so), they had an issue reproducing up north (I can't remember why atm... but low reproduction rates could also be due to cycles with lemmings populations up north... that's part of a natural "normal" cycle of the predator/prey population theory), and in normal circumstances, we often see more juveniles than adults going down south first in the winter season.
Most of the ones I saw on eBird or in the social media lately were adults like this one... so what I observe this season is in line with the statement above (that they had a low reproduction success lately).

Ok, thanks for the info !
That is really too sad... My copy is great, but the other day, I struggled a bit with its AF on the first shots. Seems to be better after a couple shots... Especially with the K1Mk2
If someone knew how to fix that one, I would maybe take a chance to convert it.

Am I the only one who own and use an FA*250-600 here ?
Anyways, Couldn't post this one in the 300mm+ thread, because it was shot @ 250mm, so, here it goes !
