Remote shutter release

Well, I'll be dog goned! It appears to be a firm solid fit, but I pressed on it and it worked perfectly. I'll look for a better fitting jack at Radio Shack. Thank you, Tom

P.s., I just measured the barrel diameter of the jack. It is 0.098", so I presume the nominal diameter is 0.100". I would have thought that being undersized only 0.002" would not have been a problem, and actually I don't think it is. It appears that the length is the defective dimension. The barrel fits snuggly, but pressing straight in causes the device to start working.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Remote shutter release

Hello Folks,

Awhile ago I purchased a Vello wired remote switch for my K-5. It didn't work and I set it aside, thinking I would just get another sometime when I placed an order with BH. Today, in a moment of idle tinkering, I took it apart and checked it with a continuity tester. The device works perfectly. So I tried it in the camera again, with the same result, nothing.

Is there a setting I am not aware of, necessary to allow the remote shutter release to function?

Thanks, Tom

Thank you, everyone.

Slowpez, I viewed your cloud collection, thank you. I too love clouds, and have always; most of my photos are skyscapes. I'm also planning to add night skyscapes to my repertoire, as time and atmospheric conditions permit. There was a good article on this subject in the most recent “Sky and Telescope.”

Shutter speed was 1/100s, which is not one of the drop-down options.

Hello Folks,

I've seen a lot of photos that have the sun in the image. Is there danger to the eyes of the photographer when taking these shots?

Thanks, Tom

Hello Folks,

Can anybody please tell me if Samyang 100-500 mm Auto Zoom 1:5.6-7.1 is a high quality lens? If it is, then perhaps I will keep it to use for planetary astrophotography.

Thanks Tom

What is backfocus? Also, what is, and how does one obtain calibration?

Thanks, Tom

Do you guys consider the DA 18-135 to offer a big step up in image quality and color rendition over the 18-55 AL? Also, for shooting landscapes, would you consider the DA 35 mm F 2.4 AL to be an improvement over the 18-88 AL?

According to Photozone the 18-135 also has an SDM drive motor. Do the 18-135 and 17-70 have different SDM motors?

Perhaps I should consider the SMC Pentax-DA 16-45mm F4 lens instead (besides which, it is $100 less).

Hmmm. The reviews mentioned an occassional difficulty with AF, but go on the say it is unusual and corrected under warranty. What more can you tell me, as I reconsider the lens (thankfully prior to purchase)?

Hello Folks,

I’m going to order a Pentax-DA 17-70 mm F4 AL [IF] SDM lens from BHphotovideo, and when I do I want to try to sell some of my existing lenses. Could someone give me an idea of what I should ask for them?

1. Pentax DA L 18-55 mm F3.5-5.6 AL
2. Sigma UC Zoom 70-210 mm 1:4-5.6 Macro 1:4.7
3. Vivitar 100 mm 1:3.5 MC Macro
4. Samyang 100-500 mm Auto Zoom 1:5.6-7.1

These lenses are all in very nice condition. They are not scratched up, they do not have any fungus, they have been stored indoors in an air-conditioned home, and they have never been dropped or abused. The Pentax was purchased new in May, 2012 along with my Pentax K-5. The Sigma and Vivitar lenses were purchased new in the 1990s for use on my K1000; they are not auto-focus. The Samyang was purchased used from a friend who sold the lenses of a deceased friend as a favor to the widow, also in the 1990s and also used (only once) on my K1000. I paid $100 for it, but have no idea if I got a good deal.

I’m going to spend $500 on the DA 17-70 lens, but am not under the illusion that I’ll recover that much from my older lenses. If you will help me evaluate them I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you, Tom

We're planning to do both the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway. From our home it's about 160 miles north on Rt. 17 to Front Royal, where the northern entrance to the Skyline Drive is located. We'll then proceed south at a leisurely pace, stopping often, and camping in our trailer nights. We'll leave the Skyline Drive and pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway, and travel all the way to Asheville, NC. I expect to take a week or two. Needless to say, I'm already excited.

When I was a youngster I wore a winter coat from the Civilian Conservation Corps, the outfit that built the Blue Ridge Parkway. Grandmother gave it to me, but I don't know which of my cousins or uncles worked for the CCC.

My wife and I watched a PBS special on the Blue Ridge Parkway a few nights ago. We're well familiar with the Parkway, as I grew up in the Virginia mountains. We've driven sections of the Parkway over the years. But watching the documentary inspired us, and we're making plans to travel the entire length with our travel trailer in one fell swoop next summer. We'll go slow and spend lots of time, and of course I'll take lots of photos. Like you, I love the mountains of Virginia.

So, does that mean that the Pentax-D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR will have an effective focal length of 150 mm when mounted on my Pentax K-5?

Hello Folks,

According to the lens review page here, the image circle of the Pentax-D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR covers the full 35mm film format. My understanding is that the CCD chip in my K-5 is smaller than 35 mm. Does this mean that the image will be cropped in the camera?

Thanks, Tom

Hello Folks,

I've noticed that my K-5 has what appears to be a visible-light green laser range finder. When I'm using the 50-200 WR lens it only comes on when the lens is set long, at or about 200 mm. Why?

Thanks, Tom

Hi Folks,

I have some lenses that I'm not using and would like to sell (to raise money to buy another lens, of couse). However, I have no idea of how much they are worth. Is there a place on the forum where it would be permitted to describe them and inquire as to how much I should expect?

Thanks, Tom

Faster?

Hello Folks,

As a relatively inexperienced amateur I have been taking lots of photos and post processing them in Picassa 3. My camera is the K-5 with 18-55 DA L and 50-200 WR lenses. My subjects are typically landscapes, skyscapes, and wildlife. I try to compose each photo in the camera, and use zoom to exclude things that don't add to the image. I find that many of my best photos are shot at 200 mm, although when I’m away from man-made clutter, I use shorter focal lengths more often. I depend on Pentax Green mode for the technical details, but have been using P mode more and more as my education progresses.

When I load a photo into Picassa I hit the “I’m feeling lucky” button to see what happens. Usually the result is an improvement, making the photo more pleasing. Almost always Picassa lightens the photo, and enhances the contrast. Is this an indication that I would see a benefit from a faster lens?

Thanks, Tom

I'm finding P-mode to be quite enlightening, thank you. Like everything else we learn, answers generate more questions. It appears that Av and Tv modes are but subsets of P-mode. Are there any intrinsic advantages to them that aren't present in P-mode?

Thanks, Tom

Does green mode affect a wired remote shutter release? I just got one from BH, and it works haphazardly. Sometimes it won’t do anything, more often it releases the shutter without engaging the autofocus. Sometimes it works correctly. I’m handling the button correctly. Turning the camera off and then on again seems to help, as does unplugging the remote and replacing it. All in all, it’s very frustrating. Could the wired remote be faulty?

P.s., also frustrating is the text editor for this forum. It deletes some spaces, so words are frequently justaposed with others. I then have to edit the post and insert spaces where they were omitted.
