old but I hope this helps somebody...
just recently I got my K-1 and I couldn't connect to my Xperia Z5.
After try many different ways to solve it, I found that the app worked perfectly when the phone was charging, then I realize that the problem was how the phone manage energy for wi-fi connection.
For Sony Xperia there is a mode called "stamina" that allows you to extend the battery life.
In my phone, that mode was always on except during charging. I disabled it and Image Sync worked with no problems. So any time that I need to use Image Sync, I have to disable stamina mode.
One problem solved but this app needs many improvements.

Hi... sadly I'm having the same problem since few weeks ago. I bought my K-30 right after was released here in Japan (in a fancy green matte color), so my warranty is expired.
SN is 4357868
Manufacture Date: 2012:06:24
and I started to have this problem after 19k shoots.
It is sad because with no warranty I think that the reparation will cost a lot or a big fraction of a new one. if it is a factory problem, maybe there is some deal to solve this problem.
I will go to the Pentax square here in Tokyo and ask for some solution.
