Abstract A willing subject

A few years ago, I was in downtown Boise, trying a little street photography. They have a popular alley where they allow local artists to display their artwork. I was busy, trying to get a feel for the scene, composing and focusing and this young lady came walking by, and paused for me to finish my photo. I asked if she would like to be part of it, and she agreed.

I got her email address and sent her a copy.

Black & White A-1 Skyraider headed into war

The A-1 Skyraider was one heck of an aircraft. A very big airplane, with a huge radial engine. It could carry more ordnance that the plane itself weighed. In this photo, he was loaded with 500 lb. bombs. This was taken in late '66 or '67.

Black & White Landing gear issues.

This was taken in 1966 aboard the USS Ticonderoga CVA-14, somewhere in the South China Sea, off the coast of Vietnam. The Crusader made a fly-by and they confirmed that his port side main landing gear did not extend. So, they raised the barrier and had him basically make a belly flop landing.

Pilot was fine, plane not so much.

A barrier landing is not so bad when the plane isn't carrying bombs or missiles. Then, things get real dicey. We had a hung 500 lb. bomb tumble off the deck once, and a air to air missile fall off and go skittering down the deck till it went over the side.

These photos were printed off of negatives from a KE-28 motor wind camera mounted above the video camera I was operating at the time. When something "special" happened, I would push the red button on the operator's handle and it began shooting 3 frames per second, IIRC.

This was taken somewhere in the South China Sea, off the coast of North Vietnam in 1967. The F-8 Crusader coming in for a landing got all haywire and the guys in front were heading for safety, thinking the plane was going to hit us. Things happen fast when the plane is going 140 MPH. A very tense few seconds, I can assure you!

I've always liked this image, but every time I look at it, I moan over the lack of depth of focus. If I had stopped down another stop or two, it would have improved it a great deal. But, it might have messed with the bokeh. Would'a, should'a, could'a.

Although it's very simplistic, I thought this lone, sun-lit flower presented a very pleasant scene. I've learned to love this lens. So versatile, it's almost like magic. It will shoot very sharp 1:2 macro from 3 feet away..... and in seconds I can shoot photo of elk on a hill 100 yds. away.:D

Nature Magnificent Bird of Prey

This is a Ferruginous Hawk, the largest of the broad-winged, buteo hawks. My falconer friend Dave had her for a couple of months, then released her back into the wild. This was one of the most interesting encounters I've ever had. This bird is very large, with a wing spread of about 5 feet and the talons are big and very sharp....and intimidating. Her stare is out of this world. Not really evil, but..... scary to say the least.... and she never took her eyes off me the entire time I was shooting her. This breed of hawk is know for having extremely large leg muscles, which are hidden by the full feathers all the way to the toes. Dave said that their talons will actually pierce an entire rabbit's body, and actually touch each other during their very forceful grip.

I didn't get to see him actually "work" her, with live bait, where she is out on her own and returns to a lure Dave swings in the air. When she returns, he tosses a live Starling into the air.... and then the the real fireworks happen! I've seen it before, and it's one heck of a thing to witness, real time. She comes in at an incredible speed and snatches the Starling out of the air in a heart beat. Then, she takes it to the ground about 100 yds. away, and immediately clips the back of the neck, killing the little bird instantly. Then she will feed.

This is such an amazing sport that takes a lot of patience and a certain feel for nature that is really something to witness.;)

One of my friend, Dave's birds. I got to watch him work her one afternoon. My first experience, and it was totally amazing. He has long since released her into the wild. He also once had a beautiful, large Ferruginous hawk. He also has a large, one-winged barn owl named Angus he's had for over 7 years.

Yes, there was, Mike. They posed a very serious problem with deck hands, especially at night. When they are turning at night, depending on the lighting, you can't see them. We lost a young man to that very reason. You get used to the noise, and always have ear plugs and "Mickey Mouse Ears" on.... which only adds to the confusion. The flight deck, when in full operation, is the most dangerous place on earth to work.... but I'd give anything on earth to spend just one more day there among all that noise, smell and danger. What a rush.

Nature Angus, the pet owl

Here's a couple more of Angus. As you can tell, his left wing is missing. I'd guestimate his talons to be close to 4" across. I do know that when he hisses.... it will get your attention immediately. It's very evil, sinister sounding.

Thanks for the kind words, Les. Unfortunately, I'm not able to venture out and about like I used to do.... so all the photos I'm posting are from files from the past. I'll try to keep it fresh.

Nature Angus, the pet owl

My friend has a pet owl he rescued from the high desert in Idaho. It had an injured wing, and the vet had to amputate it. Dave took him home and has had him as a "pet" for the past 7 years. Dave said, "I don't understand it.... I fixed his wing, treat and feed him like a king.... and the SOB STILL hated my guts!"

These birds can be very dangerous. Dave told me of a story about a local utility worker who was out in the desert, removing owl nests from high tension towers using a bucket truck. While he was in the process, a pissed-off owl swooped down and slashed the guy's neck with it's talons and he bled to death before help could arrive.

That's the reason I used a 300mm lens when I shot these! That's me in the reflection in Angus' eye.

I always encourage my students to crop their subjects more than they might be used to doing. There is no need to show their feet or even their entire face, for that matter. I've often used this photo of my son and granddaughter that I took some 25 years ago as an example of what I'm talking about.
