My 55-300 zoom was always noisy focusing and it would rack in and out hunting for focus, especially at the long end. I discovered that using spot mode on my K5II corrected the problem. It would focus quickly, even in low light with no hunting. It is like a new lens.

I don't think that most of the comments made here are bases on experience with current technology. EVF's have vastly improved in the last few years. I don't have any problems with my Pentax OVF or my Sony A7 series cameras. I did pull my K5II out the other day, to update the firmware. The finder seemed so dark in my office, compared to my A7II. It took me about a week to get used to progressive eyeglasses. Maybe this is the case with some folks, Or maybe they are just to old to accept new ideas.

The dslr version of the A7RII sensor would require a major rework and a complete new series of engineering samples to start mass production. It takes time to debug a new process with the related lower yield and increased cost. I know that it will happen, but it isn't a cost effective route for Pentax's first dslr FF body in my opinion. I base this on my eighteen years in semiconductor fabrication with Sony.

It has worked with the A7 series, because just about any lens ever made will mount on it. It is a different story with the old lens mount concept. I really enjoy my A7x camera, because they accept all of my legacy glass including Pentax in FF or aps-c format.

If you could find a 42 millimeter die with the correct pitch, you couls chase the threads to clean them up. It could be done by hand with a swiss file, by a good craftsman. After cleaning up the threads, I would suggest mount a K-mount adapter permanently. I looked at my 17mm and the threads are very fine.

I agree with you, people who complain about EVF's haven't used the new models, like my A7R. They are fantastic. You can see depth of field and exposure before you shoot. The focus peeking for manual lenses is amazing. I'm almost 72 in a couple of months with glasses and love the hi-res EVF.

Even if Pentax came out with a FF soon, your primary lenses won't work with a FF, since they are DA lenses. Wide primes for the asp-c camera are expensive and they usually aren't fast. A used FA or F28mm 2.8 makes a nice standard lens on asp-c and isn't to expensive. It would give you a 46.4 degree horizontal field of view, compared to 27 degrees with a 50mm on asp-c. I really like my F28/2.8 on my K5.

There aren't any hassles shooting with 36mp. Image transfer is fast with the newer fast cards and the pixel size is the same as a 16mp asp-c camera. I don't find shooting my A7R any different from my K5 II. I think that the K3's smaller pixels might make a difference. I really think that the 4.9 micron pixel size is perfect for me. :) ---------- Post added 10-27-14 at 01:47 AM ----------
Samsung is using a 28mp BSI sensor (back side illumination) Sony has used BSI in their high end cyber shot cameras, since 2009. BSI helps keep noise down on smaller pixel sizes. I don't think that it would help much with FF until the density increases past 70mp for FF. ---------- Post added 10-27-14 at 01:57 AM ----------
If you want better IQ, FF is the answer. Check out DXOmark tests to see the improvement of larger pixels, while retaining the mp count. Of course you have the size and weight penalty if you go with a dslr.

I see a lot of people passing judgement without watching much of the video. It just shows that it is very hard to change your views after having them for so long. It is just physics and math. Neither of these is really up for debate. They are what they are. It was thought provoking though.

Everyone is hung up on FF image superiority and the lack of need for it. Many of us want a FF so that our collection of legacy glass can be used as designed. I'm old and I don't have time to wast waiting for Pentax or anyone else to produce a dream camera. I will buy and use the equipment that meets my needs now and that I can afford. I have been using Pentax since I could afford one. It has the feature set that appeals to me and the right price. A couple of years ago I bought a used Canon FF for legacy glass use. I found that having both formats was a big plus for me. Now I have a Sony FF and it compliments my K5 II beautifully. Also I wanted to play with my fifty year old Canon 50mm f0.95 range finder lens, so now I'm happy. That is what it is all about, enjoying your hobby and spending time with friends with the same interests. :)

Like I said the A-mount bayonet throat diameter is to small to accommodate any of the other brands bayonets, so mirror clearance is mute. A few wider M42 lenses have clearance issues, such as the Pentax 35/3.5,28/3.5 and older 50/1.4 lenses. It has been my experience that if you can find a 5D for less then $500, it will usually be in well used condition. I'm either going to sell mine or give it to my daughter along with EF lenses. It is still a fantastic camera. My A7 fills the need for mounting legacy glass now.

Sony added a full frame mirrorless camera to its lineup and it is a big hit. people are leaving Canon and Nikon for the A7/R. It is a real FF compact body. Pentax could make a better A7, with better ergonomics and longer battery life. It would be $1000 cheaper then a conventional FF DSLR as well. Adapters are no more ugly then a teleconverter. Most of my adapters cost less then $10 and weigh less then 4 oz. This is a hobby or profession, not a religion. These are tools and they should allow you to be as creative as possible. That is why I have a Alpha 7 to compliment my K5II. I have been using Pentax since 1967 and I will always will have one. :) ---------- Post added 06-23-14 at 09:35 PM ----------
No one has a stabilized FF sensor yet. It would require a larger body and a bigger battery. We might end up with a camera bigger then a Nikon D800. Pentax needs a game changer, not just another FF body.

Full frame mirrorless is the way to go. If you haven't tried a hi-res EVF, you are really missing something special. Focus peeking with image zoom in the finder is incredible, you even get to see depth of field in real time, before shooting. If you ever tried to view your shots in bright sunlight, you will appreciate viewing them in the EVF. The production costs are way down, due to only one moving part, the shutter. I paid less then a $1000 for my Sony A7 FF 24mp with 28-70 kit lens. The employee discount helped a bunch and they didn't lose money either. The cost of making a conventional DSLR is much higher. It takes all of my lenses with inexpensive adapters and it is small too. Whats not to like. The K5 II is still on hand for birding. :)

Actually the A7 24mp version is a better design. It has a quitter shutter and better battery life. It has better low light performance and faster auto focus. It is also a $1000 cheaper. It also produces better performance when using third party wide angle lenses. Enough said.

So Pentax can't compete in the lens quantity department, so lets try a new approach. Third parties make lenses for the main camera manufactures, Pentax could make bodies for the Canikon lenses. Sony A7/r accepts every bodies lenses, so this isn't uncharted territory. We all know that Pentax makes the best camera bodies, so offer them in a K,F and EF mounts. Instant lens availability. I think that the patents on these lens mounts have expired by now. Nikon F 1959, Canon EF 1987 etc. I love this Idea and the EF mount will accept adapters for many other mounts. Thats why I use a Canon 5D FF for my Legacy glass.

I believe that it is a fake. These usually have a flaw. In this case it has a DA half frame lens mounted. A real full frame body would use a FA or other full frame lens. Or is this just another crop body.:hmm:

Hi David,
The lens registration distance for the Lieica R is 47.0mm and the K-mount is 45.5mm. This gives us 1.5mm difference, which isn't much. I am considering changing the mount flange on a couple of my favorite Nikon lenses to K-mount. It would entail replacing the existing bayonet with a K-mount bayonet with a flange. Some of the lenses have compoents attached to the inside of the bayonet, which must be reattached. The existing mount, once removed can be used as a template to drill the required mounting holes in the new mount. Shims would be required to restore the correct registration distance. Of course the auto diaphram may not be useable. If the Leica lenses are not spring loaded to the closed position, you wouldn't be able to use them without reversing the spring. All metering is stopdown of course. The opening in the K-mount is 44.5mm, so if the Leica bayonet is somewhat smaller a removeable adapter could be made in that case. Good luck.
