Hi Kind Folk,
I am still using my K5 and am trying to find a way to get a shot in practise, but I'm lost in here. I got some good ones of the transit of Venus. But now I don't know what I might be doing wrong.
I remain stymied. I can see the sun through using the flash pop up, and then can point the camera. I leave it off at this point. But, when I try to look through viewfinder I cannot see a thing. I cannot see anything with Live View, nor with the view finder and the filter in place. Not even w/o the filter (I got from Thousand Oaks), and advice to sight the sun first and then turn off the camera and place the filter on.
Just can't seem to get it right.
Any advice?
Thanks, Folk... Still believe I can do this.

I had one of those, I now run with a 18 -200 Tamron lens for my K-5. Good lenses and a nice fit for the Pentax.
Could be misremembering, it was stolen a few years back. I do like the 18- 200, and then my Opeka 1300 w/ teleconverter that I'll use this summer for the Solar Eclipse.

Hi there Kind Folk,
I'll be near Jackson Hole, WY for the Eclipse and have my Pentax K5 and solar filter from Thousand Oaks. Just looking for good advice for positioning camera to get a good sighting and hope for grand photos.
I have my Solar CE glasses to help me with orienting the camera and, of course, the remote for that magnification. Just wondering if anyone has good feedback for getting the best shots. I fly in August to do this, and have lots of opportunity to practise. Will likely take it out today to practice.
Kind thanks for any comments about best practice.

Hi there,
I'm using a K-5, with an Opekta 1300mm with a 2X. I also have a Tamron 200mm. So, I'll efectively have a 2600mm lens for the shoot. I have a very good tripod and will most likely use the remote for stability with the shots. I recall chatting with you about the Venus eclipse. I only had the 200mm, so did not get any good shots of Venus, but did get a few interesting ones.
I have a rear teleconverter, and know that I need a good solar filter up front to protect the entire outfit.
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. It is this August and we will be in Jackson Hole for the event.

We've had our reservations for some time. And our plans are simple. Just looking to get a few good shoots from the project. All the folk there are wishing me well.
This will be my first Solar Eclipse so fully expect a learning curve of some caliper.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'll be out to photograph the Solar Eclipse this August and I would like some suggestions for what filter(s) I need on my telephoto lens for getting good shots.

We have a transit of Venus across the sun that will not happen again before 2117. I have a K-7 and a neutral filter. How do I step down the aperture so as to get good photos of same? thanks to all for any input. I am in So.Cal and want to get this shoot on the 'morrow.;)

Just one shot came out, and not that well. The ones I compose for the moon reflecting off the solar panels comes out pretty good anymore. I got some fun shots of the crescent sun refracting through leaves onto our back door, or the cat box.
Thanks for all the ideas, I now have a much better idea on how to proceed when Venus crosses the sun.
See: Transit of Venus .org, which won't happen again until 2117.
Cheers!:)
