Thanks for the kind comments.

The pictures come off of the camera rather dull, but I cut out the subject(s) with magnetic lasso and use high pass filter and unsharp mask to sharpen them, then I adjust the color cast of the background and the subjects seperately to enhance the color and contrast (the on-camera white balance just never quite seems to get it 'right').

With ISO over 800 on the K10D, you pick up a lot of noise, especially in the under exposed regions of the photos.... so I usually contrast the image a bit to try to lose some of the dark area noise by clipping it black... from there you just have to be careful not to go overboard w/ sharpening.

Here's a blow-up of #2... still not full size, but as large as flickr will allow me to post.

You can see there's a bit of motion blur in this one as well, 1/125s for this shot was just not quite enough.

I was using ISO1250 on my K10D. I did a lot of massaging and smart sharpening in PS though to eliminate the noise, and shot in DNG of course.

I'm not really sure that a tripod is the answer. I do a lot of cheerleading photos for my sister-in-law at night and the key to getting good action shots is achieving adequate shutter speed. I use a tamron 70-200 f2.8 for the most part and use Tv mode, with the shutter speed set to 1/125 - 1/200 sec depending on the lighting conditions. I also set auto ISO 100-1600 (I have a K10D, yours will go even to ISO3200)... With that high of a shutter speed, a tripod does you little good (except tick off the guy sitting in front of you).

The pop-up flash does you absolutely no good unless you can get close to the cheerleaders, but I like the suggestion from Captmacq of getting a hot-shoe flash if you're able to get closer... that'll really help.

Here's another one for the series. I couldn't resist myself for this one because it was just too funny. My father-in-law (to be) loves to yell at the referees so this one is for him.

Bigben hit the nail on the head here. If you're going to use your lens without the hood, do yourself a favor and go buy a decent UV or 1B filter. Better to scratch a $40 filter than the front element of your $700 lens.

Hey all,

I just got home from the PIAA semi-final game in State College PA where Bethel Park defeated Wilson High 38-35 in 3 overtime periods. What this means to me is that I'll be headed to Hershey PA for the PIAA Final game next weekend.

Here's a few shots:

Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Di LD @ 200mm f3.5 1/1600s ISO 200

Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Di LD @ 200mm f3.5 1/1000s ISO 200

Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Di LD @ 160mm f3.5 1/1250s ISO 400

Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Di LD @ 108mm f3.5 1/1000s ISO 200

Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Di LD @ 140mm f3.5 1/800s ISO 400

This last photo is the game winning field goal, booted after 3 overtime periods to seal the 3 point victory.

Pentax SMC F 35-70 f3.5-4.5 @ 55mm f5.6 1/125s ISO 400

Hope you all enjoy these as much as I enjoyed taking them. The weather was a balmy 29Deg F. though.... brrrr.....

You all see now why I'm working on fake backdrops here.

@Mike - I straightened and sharpened the prints. That was an original that I posted.

Thanks all.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I did use a feather for cutting the selection but looking back at it I probably should have used more. There are some hard edges.

@Gary. The mothers did get what they asked for. These photos were done in October so they've had their prints for a while now. I'm just doing this for my own collection.

Here's a de-res'd original.

Ok so I've got some great photos that, unfortunately have horrible backgrounds. They're all portraits from a homecoming dance about a month ago. Unfortunately the mothers insisted that the portraits take place in front of the family room TV console, so everything in the background looks like cherry and AV equipment.

So, with that in mind I've been working on cutting the couples out of some of the portraits in PS with the idea of making a background montage. The problem is that I'm not good enough w/ PS to conjure up a background that doesn't look horribly fake. Case in point:

Does anybody know PS well enough to give me a few pointers here?

Thanks much,
