*PETITION* Lets put an end to the crazy online Pentax lens prices in the US!

In my opinion, Pentax should also take into account that when it comes to some of the accessories for studio work, and other types of light modification, companies like Pocket Wizard (for example), and many others have a scant few, if any products for Pentax users to take advantage of. I realize that is a choice each product manufacturer makes, but it definitely has an impact on is Pentax really worth the investment or not.

I'm not a marketing guru, however, I can say that the bottom line is that Pentax equipment still has a way to go before it can afford to push around its customer base in such a fashion.
Canon and Nikon's equipment on a comparative level is still just too good and affordable for Pentax to do what it is doing. This has me looking at them.

Count me in. Bring these prices back down to a fair and reasonable price.

The disproportionate increase in many of the great Pentax lenses available of late is not only a poor decision, but bad business.

Dear Pentax,

Pentax DSLRs have started to really come into their own and for that I thank you and am grateful. I shoot with the K-5 and enjoy great results. I also realize Pentax is now owned by the Ricoh Company and I believe this is the impetus for the recent and sudden increase. If this is the way they are going to conduct business, they are really starting to make me think twice before I invest another cent in Pentax.

How to push the Pentax Full-Frame Idea and get that FF out faster...

To TJK911, Your comments are well said.

A point to ponder: How many people on this thread realize the quantum leap in price increase the consumer will incur for all the R&D, complete redesign of the camera itself, building lenses to accommodate that sort of sensor? Because if one thinks that the great Pentax legacy glass from the film days will work on a new FF sensor and give great results, one is sorely mistaken. Now, take into account the new experimentation regarding having or excluding a low pass filter, it takes it to a new level of design issues.

Here is the question: Is one able and willing to pay a substantial increase in price (prices on par with Canon's 5D MK III, Nikon's D800, and the appropriate glass to make it work to its fullest potential) for such a leap in technology in Pentax's line up of cameras, and is it fiscally sound for Pentax to take such a leap of faith in the hopes that it will be a hit for the Pentax market?

I look forward to what people have to say.

Which software do you use to import and process RAW files ?

I import (copy and paste) my images manually from my camera's memory card into the appropriate folders on my second hard drive. then I immediately reformat my memory card in the camera.

I shoot RAW only as a DNG. I edit my RAW/DNG images with DXO Optics Pro 7.5, which supports both PEF and DNG formats, as well as most other RAW formats. I have Capture One, Lightroom and ACR in Photoshop CS5, but I find DXO Optics Pro a better fit for me. I then edit images as a 16 bit TIFF in Photoshop and use Topaz DeNoise to tame noisy images.

Hope this helps.

Don

Yes, you are correct. Pentax never has created their own sensor. Good catch. Food for thought: For Pentax to maintain its individuality and breakout and away from the pack, I would like to see Sigma's Foveon sensor evolve into a great full frame sensor and collaborate with Pentax to include it in a FF Pentax camera. That would be a worthy endeavor for R&D if Ricoh/Pentax and Sigma can strike an equitable agreement. The Foveon chip is remarkable, but Sigma is doing very little with it I can see. I wonder why?

Cheers,
Don

Hello rawr,

DeNoise is pretty straight forward to use. Not that complicated at all, however, to make the most of the program, follow the directions exactly as shown. If you use DXO Optics Pro like I do, zero out and turn off all the settings except the lens modules (I made a preset for that), then, the first thing you will do when you open the TIFF in Photoshop is to go straight to the DeNoise plugin and run it. I like to use it manually, but it is also possible to make presets for each ISO setting for your camera as a starting point.

Here is a link to a YouTube video webinar given by Nichole, demonstrating the complete workflow of DeNoise 5:

You Tube

The tutorials on the web site by Dr. Yang are also very good.

I also spoke with Nichole on the phone regarding workflow and she is very knowledgeable and a great person. She is a photographer herself, so she is in a very good grasp of the product and its capabilities.

Also, there is a 30 day free trial that is fully functional, so there is nothing to lose here.

I look forward to your thoughts,
Don

Right now, the Nikon D800 has the best FF sensor on the market. So good that supply can't keep up with demand. Pentax has made great strides to start competing with the "hotshots" and if Pentax really wants to get in the game for real, they really need to get their digital noise under control and create a Full Frame Sensor that can rival the Nikon D800. Granted, that means they will also have to develop a whole new series of lenses to keep up, but this is the direction the industry is going. I have to believe this is in the works at Pentax and they will continue to be tight lipped until they produce something worthy of releasing to the consumer. It will have to be stellar, so I look forward to what they come up with. Lets send out the good vibe.

How were you able to get that cool looking Pentax K20D and K5 proud owner avatar to show up on your post? I would like to have that on my posts too.
Thanks,
Don

I agree with Adam. Shoot RAW. No in camera Noise reduction. I shoot with a K20D and above 400 ISO it is really noisy, even with the "exposing to the right technique." Try the 30day free trial of Topaz DeNoise 5 (topazlabs.com) and follow the tutorials on the website and YouTube. I am still in the trial phase of the software and am very impressed with its performance and ability to retain detail. It has some really great features that makes it stand out from the other NR programs on the market. It also beats the pants off of Photoshops NR routines. This is the first thing you will want to address before continuing on with your workflow in Photoshop. I use DXO Optics Pro 7 as my RAW converter (great program), then when I bring the TIFF into Photoshop, DeNoise is the first thing I do. My only criticism is that it is a plugin only and does not have a stand alone program. Their reasoning is that it keeps cost down for the consumer, but upgrades are free, so I guess I can live with that. Also, the K5 is so much better with noise reduction, but there are still times when one needs industrial strength NR.
I would love to get opinions from others on this subject.

As some of us know, Pentax DSLRs can get a bit noisy at higher ISOs. I have a K10D (retired) and currently use the K20D. I am wondering what people are using to deal with noise reduction in their workflow and what NR programs are being used, if any.
I have been trying Topaz DeNoise 5 on a 30 day free trial and am really excited about the results it is yielding.
Thanks,'Don
