$564.64. including return shipping. A bit much. I gaff tape my pop up flashes (neatly) on my K5, K3 and KP so they don't open by mistake, so I decided to gaff tape the lcd down so it cannot be pulled out. The camera is great, I just don't want to be paying for a repair like this again. I also don't trust the camera in rain or ice as this is more a consumer level camera.

I had to send in my KP for this very issue. Not a cheap repair and there are no 3rd party parts. You can see the hair line crack when this happens. Took over 3 months to get the camera back.

My KP had a flex cable failure. I am assuming that this is a common failure with this camera as I hardly used the flip out LCD. The flex cable forms a crack as it enters into the LCD. You can see the hair line crack. Unfortunately there are no 3rd party suppliers. You will have to go directly to the official repair center and pay the hefty price to have it fixed.

Seems that way. Pentax is a small company and does not have suppler network like Canon, Sony.... If you own a KP, hope it don't break. It's a great camera otherwise.

I will keep them in mind for next time. However, don't be surprised if they cannot get the parts either. Thanks!

I have tried other shops but the part is not available, only through a authorized repair service. That explains the high fee: Have them repair it, or your camera is a door stop.

Precision camera is charging $564.64 to replace the flex cable. Debating whether it's worth it or take the money and invest in a mirror-less.

Your right..that was and still is my goal. I can hand hold with flash , no problem. Decent daylight, no problem. The lens I have is really nice but has a top speed of f/5.6. I have been looking for a faster 135mm but have yet to find one I like. I don't much care for the Wollensak/Graphlex 135mm f/4.7 lenses which I do have. I am looking for something a little more modern. In the mean time the lens I have will do. Still, The Polaroid 900 makes a compact camera and I don't have to use a cloth to focus even on a tripod.

You got me :) I could probably get away with shooting down to 30th or 15th of a second if I held my breath, otherwise I don't seem to get as good of results.

Yes, wide open (hand held) can be a bit sketchy unless you have it dead nuts on.

Hey, you don't live in the North West. ;) Sunny days (when we get them) I can stop it down or when we have light overcast. I usually attach a flash so I can stop it down then too. Works great on a tripod though.
Shot hand held with flash.

Custom built 4x5 range finder - made from a Polaroid 900. Shots cab be hand held but the fastest speeds are f/5.6 which tends to make it work best with a tripod.

Quote: An other example with 27mm tube + FA 75mm @f/3.5 The 645D is pretty impressive. So is the nice use of the short DOF affect.

Even a 6.1 mega pixel camera should be able to do a decent 5x7 print. I did a few prints with my old Pentax *stDs and got pretty nice results. It does not take a lot of megapixels to make a nice looking photo on Flickr or the Internet in general. If you plan on making big prints or even be taken serious these days you need at least 10 mega pixels.
FF does not hurt but it is hard to believe you cannot get reasonably nice images at 8x10 with APS-C. 35mm film can handle 8x10 with no issues so APS-C should be able to do the same. I am sure a really sharp lens does not hurt either.

I was, I think I need to click reply, not post. Lol. What you say makes sense. I think I was on another tangent regarding bouquet and crop factor.

I had the K 28 f/2 at one time along with the 85 f/1.4 but I got rid of it all for a pittance back in the 90's when I bought all my 6x7 gear. I am still kicking myself for that.
I own about four 50mm f/1.4 lenses. two m42's one K and one M. Had even more of them but gave a couple away.

I know... Pentax tends to pride them selves in compactness. And I tend to like all there lenses too. Pentax had a 35mm f/1.4 prototype but it was never put into production.
Their 85mm f/1.4 is one of the best.

I am a little confused about this. As I understand it, the crop factor is just that. a cropping of the image. The lens is still the same distance from the film plane (err...digital plane ;) ) The focus and DOF should be identical in both FF and 1.6x or 1.3x.... It is just matter of cropping down the visual area. Saying that a 50mm is a 62mm (or there abouts) when a crop factor is added is a little miss leading because there is no magnification involved as would be when you extend the focal length.
How do you like that Sigma 30mm f/1.4. It's too bad that Pentax has always been a little conservative about making fast lenses

I would not think it would make any difference with FF vs APS-C either from reading but I have no way to compare. thanks for the info.
But then again, I am using primes like the 50mm f/1.2 so I probably would not pick up on it.
Shot done with a Auto Takumar f/1.8 and a old *stDS. Looks like plenty of creamy DOF here |
