Oh oh oh, I get what you're saying! It may look like he's bracing off the bottom (might be the perspective), but I can assure you he is not.
And yup! You got it! You basically described the fish tank I submerged to get the shot! Nice work! How could you tell?

You're almost there, though this is a pool with concrete sides so there's no glass wall to shoot through.

Those angles are super cool. I dig how some of them make diamonds. The simple background in contrast with the organized lines really makes for a pleasing image. Nice shot!

That lighthouse is gorgeous! I like the "Gritty and Pretty" theme here: the bottom of the frame is super grunge and the lighthouse is very peaceful and perfect. Also along that line is the tones. I like the dark to light as it goes from grunge to pretty. Good shot

Yeah, I can answer your question from my own experience. I have a filter holder, a big lee stopper, and a B&W polarized filter. These are square filters and run pretty hefty prices, but what you can get with these is the ability to do things you can't do in photoshop. The most important filter to me is the polarizer: not only does it reduce glare, but it lowers the exposure by about two stops! Next the Big Lee Stopper will slow a 1/30th to 30 seconds (or around there because it's 10 stop ND). During day time or bright sunsets this filter allows for insane exposures: it will blur cars in direct sunlight...

Pentax Info: Pentax K5, Sigma 10-20 @10mm f/5.6 (large DOF) iso 400, 1/1500 handheld. I set it to AV and with the exception for only one portion in the sky, the whole DR was retained. I would have liked to shoot at Iso 100 because there was some noise when i post processed.
Post: Lightroom: settings: Highlights to the far left, Shadows 3/4 to the right and a small amount of saturation/ vibrance before importing to photoshop. Also I should mention i used corrective perspective to make the tracks even out vertically.
Photoshop: Using luminosity masks, i brought back highlight and shadow detail even more. I used Luminosity masks to also bring contrast to the tones. Using dodge/ burn I added contrast to the outcroppings on the horizon. A little bit of warmth and coolness to various parts was added to bring more depth/ contrast.

The best results come from the best lenses. After lenses, a good set of ND filters and a polarized filter are next. Take the time to look at filter holders or circular filters. Reference the below image and if you'd like more examples, go to this example page I created.

Nice! Is that a graduated filter? Yeah, the polarizer is amazing, you're right about the colors and reflections. I've noticed that too! Nice, glad you got out and tested it. I usually will do a 10 or 3 second timer delay so all the vibrations are out of my tripod. I wish Pentax would have done a mirror-up + timer delay, but I'm very happy with the K5 too! :) Thanks for your reply!

Here's a before and after with straight ambient vs composite. The composite consisted of a polarized layer and umbrellas with strobes illuminating the interior and clothing. The most drastic change affected by the polarizer was the yellow lighting reflecting off the wood floor. The polarized filter not only weakened the glare, but took out a majority of the yellow color cast too. To further minimize the yellow cast, I took out select areas with a desaturation of the yellow channel. Click the image to reveal a before/after slider.
