Sports Surf shots

Went out for a surf mission with a few friends. Meant to have been large surf at Hickery bay today, and it was for sure. I'm not much of a surfer yet but took my chances for a several hours, then got out and snapped a few shots with the K20D + Tak 300 F4 preset (surf was declining lots by that point though) :o

Started to rain ~10mins after I started so short timeframe really. Fairly soft shots too (a long way from the actual surfers so shots are cropped)

Enjoy - I did :D

*P.S. I really enjoyed the pentaxian video of Mark Dimalanta seen here: http://www.pentaxian.com/#pentaxians/inspirationalist/mark_dimalanta *

DA40XS Lens Tested on Film (MZ-S + DA40XS on Kodak Gold 200)

Tested the new DA40XS lens on film camera last Sat just to see if the lens works okay on FF film camera. Here is the setup:

I finished the whole roll in one hour around my place, all are just quick snaps. And it's after 6pm just around the time when the Sun was going down. Sky was pretty doll too, so please don't judge too much on the photo quality. I just wanted to test if the lens had any problem working on FF film cameras.
Here is the whole roll, 36.8 shots (the last shot got a black bar on the right 'cause film finished already):

Looking at the scanned results, I'd say the lens works pretty well on FF film camera :)

I'd post all the 36.8 shots below, no cropping or vignetting adjustment on any photo, except some level and saturation adjustment (the scanned results are way too saturated :()

------------------------------------

These two are the first two snaps from our window, first one was shot at F8, the second was wide open at F2.8, you can see there is just a little bit vignetting on the wide open photo, not very obvious at all:

Thanks to these two fellow Pentaxians who took the short walk together with me:

The rest of the whole roll film:

Thanks to our Penatx friends who took the short walk with me, and sorry for the funny color, can't help from my side :(

after relocating a couple of times to evade the incoming cloud layer, I ended up south of Sacramento at this decommissioned nuclear station. This is a bit of a composite. I did shoot everything, just not necessarily at the same time. ;)

As an engineer over the last 40 years, all I can really say that in a past life I have had some experience in this area. So, let's divide this problem into is parts and address each part, and see what you should be looking for, based on the requirements that you have laid out so far....

Let's divide the problem initially into three separate areas - the platform / vehicle and the camera system, along with a pointing capability (getting the camera pointed in the right direction, both azimuth and elevation). Also, I'll keep it pretty simple.

Platform -
  • Since you want to get the platform up into the air, fly it to some point in the air (called a station or way point), probably have it hover while you do some photography, then return to you - landing gently. So, do you want to manually have to "fly" it - take off, fly to where you want it to go, and then have to "fly" to hover, and then to fly it back and land. Think of the R/C craft (either planes or helos) - that is a lot of work and its going to take a lot to both fly it and take images at the same time. The bottom line is that there are two types of systems - the R/C where you actually fly it, or the ones (via autonomous flight) where you load up a flight plan with some way points - point 1 where you currently are, point 2, 200 yards out and 500 feet up - hover there until commanded to proceed, and then return to point 1. Also, I'm thinking that you are thinking of a copter 4, 6 or 8 motors, etc. with an autonomous flight controls with GPS.

Pointing -
  • This is going to require some sort of gimble arrangement, especially for the elevation - so as to point down in a controlled manner. Azimuth may be able to be taken care of by having the platform rotate on station - or better yet taken care of by the pointing system, so the "target" is lined up and framed for the camera. This will probably be a WiFi control also that will down link to a laptop/netbook that you will probably be controlling the camera from.

Camera -
  • As much as I like Pentax for a lot of reasons, I don't think that this is going to be the most appropriate camera for this application. I could be wrong, but here is my thinking. The ability to view cameras in real time, I would not consider this as minor. This ability, along with size and weight are some principal requirements. In order to view (control) the camera's image, you are going to need a camera with some wireless capability. Viewing the image is one thing - a WiFi SD card will do that for you. However, to zoom in and command it to take an image, you are going to need a card similar to the Pentax FluCard - i.e. tethering ability. Right now that is only available on the K3. The K cameras are fairly large and heavy. The larger and heavier the payload the larger and heavier and more expensive the platform - the copter. Other than size and weight the K3 has everything - via the FluCard - and I don't know about the FluCard's range, which draws from the K3's battery. You will have all the controls available other than zoom, so you are going to have to pick your focal length prior to take off. Metering, shutter, ISO and aperture should be controllable via the FluCard. But the pointing system would need to support it, and that would be a problem, in terms of stabilizing the platform with a large camera and lens slung under it, moving around a lot (a moving center of gravity is not good here). A slightly smaller camera will probably work better. A smaller sensor will give you better depth of field - and that would bring up tethering / WiFi capabilities again. Built in body stabilization would certainly help. I don't think that having inter-changeable lenses body is really an option at this point. Smaller and more specialized is where the industry currently is at.

Here is a recent article on the industry highlighting one company, along with some additional links to various other websites. The article indicates a reasonable copter starts in the $600 range, so your budget appears to be reasonable on the lower end. However, this needs to be a system, not just a copter or camera, there is all the other items that needs to be considered too.I have no specific knowledge in any of these companies or products. You can spend a lot of time and money trying to put the parts together. I am thinking that a platform with a pointing capability is one package - and they would certainly have camera suggestions.

Hope that helps...

Someone in another thread has posted a picture of what looks to be the long awaited 1.4x teleconverter. It appears to have screw drive and SDM contacts. It also has the AW designation.

Great idea - gives me an excuse to show pics from the mid 80s, with ASA400 film I've long forgotten, the Oly OM2s and the Tamron 35-80 SP... Some of the best pictures I've ever taken were from that time.

Most of these are scans of prints...

Thanks to Tim for hosting last week's challenge! I was surprised to win my first challenge, but it was very fun to partake and finally do more than just administrative stuff on the site for a change :)

This challenge closes in a week, at 11:59pm EST on January 8th. I'll post the winner shortly thereafter.

SPL Underwater Housing for K7
Posted By tpeace

This is a review of the SPL underwater housing for the K7. My primary use is as a snorkeler in the surf break to photograph surfers so I’m writing this from that perspective. I've used water bags for my K20 in the past and am completely comfortable with those for snorkeling in calm water. However, I'm often in the area of the surf break (i.e. rough waters) so I felt I needed something more secure to protect the camera.

Casing and accessories:

Brief Description:

For those of you unfamiliar with the SPL underwater housings here’s a brief description:

The housing is good for use in depths. Up to 5 meters. It is constructed out of light weight aluminum, anodized for protection against salt water corrosion. The housing is approximately 3 pounds empty. Because it contains significant empty space, it is buoyant in water. (I suppose a scuba diver would want to attach a weight to remove buoyancy for easy handling underwater.)

The front plate is a firm plexi-glass with a fixed-shaped dome (port) custom designed for the lens. The standard port offered is for a Pentax 10-17mm zoom. (I have found the 18-55mm kit lens will fit when the zoom is set mid-range, approx. 35mm.) Other custom ports are available from SPL and typically run in the upper hundreds (600-800 USD) per port.

They did make a custom model for the K10 previously, but my understanding is that they no longer make custom housings. As far as I know, the only Pentax camera they now support is the K7.

K7 Camera in casing- close-up:

The camera fits snugly in the housing and is help in place by several hard rubber mounting spacers. These have been placed by SPL as necessary for the particular camera model supported to allow the control access levers to reach the following controls:
Control Ports:

- Shutter Release

- Front dial (function varies based upon camera custom set-up.)

- Rear dial (function varies based upon camera custom set-up.)

- Shooting mode dial (but non-functional due to K7’s locking pin on this dial).
Two optional ports support:

- Port for external flash system (SPL sells one separately, other options might exist but I’m unaware. To date, I haven’t used this port.)

- A pistol grip with shutter release control (via a shuttle release cable built into the grip.) This comes standard with the housing.
After the camera is placed inside you will only have access to the above controls so obviously the camera must remain on the entire time it is in the sealed casing. (In video mode, I found this generates quite a bit of heat which dissipates while in water).

All three ports are sealed by o-rings which must be kept clean from sand and other dirt. Following use, the o-rings should be coated lightly with a silicon gel (small amount provided with housing.)

The housing provides several view ports to the rear display and to the LED top display.

Back & Top view Ports:

It also comes with a detachable wrist-leash and a neoprene port cover for protection.

The retail price is approx. $1,600 USD.

My experience:

While insertion of the camera into the housing takes a bit of practice (it is a tight fit) once in the water it is comfortable in the hands and well balanced in the water. It does occupy one hand while swimming which was I found to be a bit of a challenge when swimming against a hard current.

In Use:

Given that you don’t have access to the menus once the camera is placed inside the housing, it is important to think thru the shooting mode and camera settings in order to provide as much flexibility as possible in order to deal with lighting and composition once in the water.

For shooting stills, I prefer using either AV or TV mode one of the e-dials set to adjust the exposure. If I have good light, I’ll shoot High Quality JPEG to squeeze as many shots as possible on a card. If lighting is questionable, I’ll shoot RAW only in hopes that I can PP out a quality image. I clear my largest SD card and also use a fully charged battery for each session in the water. I set W/B to Auto, shutter control to continuous Lo-Speed, AFC, and shutter button half-way for Auto-focus to on. I prefer to not push ISO past 280.

What I don’t like:

- No access to zoom ring and focus rings on the lens.

- For Auto-focus, the housing requires use of the shutter button halfway setting. This means I miss a lot of shots while the camera is hunting.

- The housing uses 7 wing-nuts to secure front port watertight. It’s a little time-consuming to get in and out of the housing, especially with tired fingers after being pounded in a heavy surf.

- Can’t change shooting mode easily. As I mentioned, the housing provides a control to change the setting which is probably left over from the K10 days. But the K7 now uses a locking pin on top of the mode dial so the housing’s control can’t engage it. I haven’t found a way around this.

- The basic design and function seems to be carry-over from film camera days. I would think for the price that someone could come up with an option that gives access to menus, ISO, WB, shutter control (hi-speed/lo-speed) settings, etc.

Whew! Probably more than you wanted to read. I’ll be happy to answer any questions that I can. I'm sure there's a lot that I forgot.

Regards,
-tom

Converting K-01 to IR-only camera.

So I bought a second K-01. One thought about it is to rebuilt it to an IR-only camera with a 720nm filter infront of the sensor.

I asked Pentax Germany and they can do that for a resonable price when I provide the filter.

The questions I'm with are:
  • Where to purchase the filter?

  • Is 720nm the right choice?

  • Any thoughts about this project?

  • They don't know if the AF will work proparly after the rebuild, but know that there are no options for re-adjusting the AF-system. So anyone knows if the filter is part of the CDAF system or that I can expect that it works proparly?

  • Will the liveview work normal with such a system? A filter infront off the lens makes it black, but how different is this with a liveview only camera and the filter built into the camera infront off the sensor?

A nice amount off questions, and looking for some knowledge.

DA 70 LTD - sharpest Pentax Lens?
Posted By selar

It appears that out of all the Pentax lenses tested by Klaus at www.photozone.de, the DA 70 LTD is the reigning champion as far as resolving power goes. The K5 is capable of resolving a maximum of 2750 LW/PH, the DA 70 acheives 2706 in the centre at f4. Is it possible it is the sharpest Pentax lens ever made? The FA77 is yet to be tested on K5, but it beats the FA 31 LTD roundly. Wish Klaus would hurry up and test FA77LTD, but is it likely to beat the DA 70?

Contest Raw fragility - the Duplo DA21ltd give away contest

This is my entry:

I am working as a geomorphologist. Geomorphologist study how the landscape, the surface of the earth is formed. We study how the landforms, such as valleys or dunes will develop and what the consequences are for society. I mainly work in the Arctic, a very fragile place. During my masters I worked on Svalbard, where this picture was taken. I investigated how rock cliffs develop. You can see, that this rockface is very lose and will release a lot of rockfall. Studying causes and consequences of rockfall is important, as this can present a significant danger for people living in mountainous areas and every year people die by rockfalls or rock avalanches of different sizes. In 1963 around 2,000 people died in the city of Vajont in Italy as a consequence of a rockface instability in a single event. In high mountainous areas, rocks are often frozen and “clued” together by water in the clefts. This is called permafrost. Part of the problem with dangers from rocks walls, is that due to climate change this permafrost is thawing, causing a lot of instability in the rockwalls and an increasing amount of disasters.

Permafrost is also important in another respective. In the Arctic huge areas consist of frozen soil. These areas are flat and thawing of the permafrost due to climate change will not affect us immediately. But these soils contain a lot of carbon, C. At present the carbon is fixed by permafrost, but as the soil thaws due to climate change, this carbon can be released in the form of carbon dioxide, CO2, or methan CH4 and go into the atmosphere. Therefore it could even further enhance climate change. It is thus considered as one of the critical tipping points for earths climate, that needs to be studied. Time is short. The melting rates of permafrost are faster then ever observed before.

This is what I will investigate in my Phd, where I will go to Siberia and northern Canada to see how much carbon is stored in permafrost soils (no one knows exactly) and how much could be released to the atmosphere due to climate change (there is no clue on this figure).

This work is very important for everyone of us. Climate change may make our lives and especially the lives of our children very difficult. Therefore more research of the system earth is needed. Permafrost research is a topic, where the balance between earths fragility (melting of permafrost caused by human beings) and the raw power (rockfalls and climate change) becomes very evident. It is just that only few people know about permafrost at all. Part of the problem is, that we cannot really see or photograph permafrost, but as it disappears we can photograph the disasters that its melting causes.

Scientists sometimes struggle to communicate their research to the public, because it may be less interesting then Hollywood stars or football. Photography is one way to communicate our research to the public and raise awareness of the dramatic changes that currently happen in the Arctic. This lens could therefore be used to really change something!

Contest Raw fragility - the Duplo DA21ltd give away contest

Some compelling entries here. Thanks for running this competition Thomas.
This is going to be one highly contested one.

My submission is a broad landscape of Jervis Bay's Captains Beach - a picturesque sandstone-lined bay with pristine waters and beautiful facade. The prize of the DA 21 would be a wonderful asset to my future landscape photography given the focal length fits quite nicely with the majority of my desired field of view and perspective.

This one was taken with the DA 12-24, a bulky but reasonably lightweight lens that the DA 21 would nicely come in place of for much of my landscape work, whilst keeping the bag light and small on my travels in the future.

All the best to everyone submitting.

First of all, thank you very much for this contest. I am pretty sure you will have a hard time to choose the winner. :) Here's my entry:

How does this picture show the "raw power and fragility of nature"? I would think it is quite obvious, but please let me give you some more detail.

The star of this picture is one of the countless hoodoos of Bryce Canyon, Utah. When first coming to the place I could not really decide where to put
my eyes (and lens) first. Wandering around, I took this quick shot mostly because of the light situation and hurried on to catch up to my significant other,
who thankfully has the patience of a saint. It was later on that this picture really got me thinking.

At first sight, nothing spectacular is happening in this picture.
However on a closer look, it shows the very destruction of this delicate structure. In changes so small one could never perceive them, the whole thing
is taken away grain for grain by wind and water, heat and frost. The raw, brutal force (not) shown is nature's heaviest weapon: time.
Time has rested little sea creatures on the ocean floor, baked them to rock, rose the ground thousands of feet and then instantly
began to wear it down again.

In a few years this spire will be completely eroded. The elemental forces already gnaw at the rocks you see to the right, turning a wall of stone into hoodoos again,
grinding them down, too. See, more than 16 million years captured in 1/250s!

Andreas

Ps.: Someone else was faster with this idea, great picture Mika! :o
