K-x frose when uppdating software

I had the same issue first time I updated my K-x - it appeared to take several hours until the battery died and then appeared to be bricked after the update

Fortunately it's a well known issue with the K-x which Pentax are aware of and will fix under warranty if you ship it off to them.

5 hard drives in 1 computer

It really depends how important the data you store is to you and whether or not you're prepared to add extra complexity to your system.

The problem you have is that if one hard drive mechanically fails, you will lose all of the data on that drive - with the four-bay NAS you should be able to set that to RAID 5 mode. You would then only be able to use the capacity of three drives in the NAS, but the fourth would act as a "parity" drive - basically, up to one drive in the NAS can fail and you will lose no data. Otherwise if the NAS is set to JBOD/RAID 0 (set to use all four drives for space) and a hard drive fails, you will probably lose all of your data in the NAS. Once it's in RAID 5 mode I would use the NAS instead of your fourth drive for backups, and I would just use Lightroom/Windows Explorer to dump the images there instead of the backup software.

Depending on how brave you are, you could also implement a RAID array in your desktop as well - most computer motherboards support software-level RAID these days but there is added complexity in configuring this on a computer in comparison to a NAS - in the NAS at least it is just a simple case of changing a few settings in drop-down lists. If you were to implement a RAID array in your desktop, I would retain Windows on a single drive and use the other four drives again in RAID 5 which would give you 6TB of space (You may or may not need to throw in another 2TB hard drive) The added bonus of using RAID 5 on your desktop would be that you would only see two partitions (C:\, D:\) on your desktop instead of five.

You could also add an extra layer of data security by signing up with a cloud storage host - such as DropBox or SkyDrive and sync the folders you're currently working on in Lightroom just in case you have a house fire, earthquake, North Korean nuclear strike, etc.

using Flash with auto iso.

The camera will bring the ISO down to compensate for ambient lighting without the flash (i.e. a dark room will result in the camera using close to your maximum specified ISO, e.g. ISO6400/12800) and then the flash will adjust it's output for the ISO.

Thanks! I may get round to uploading some photos at some point - there's a few nice castles nearby where I live, I'll try and dig out the better photographs! ;)

Haha really? I find that surprisingly! :D Whereabouts did you visit in Scotland? There's beautiful scenery all over the country - only problem is that we have very few days throughout the year when it's not chucking it down with rain!!

Ahh, excellent - always good to find my fellow countrymen! :)

Hehe yeah, that sounds like a great bargain! What I've always been surprised about is how most of these older lenses go for peanuts on eBay and even some retailers online, despite being perfectly usable! (Okay, maybe focusing isn't as easy as it was in the split-prism days, but with a bit of fiddling we can get there!)

Hi everyone!

I've been interested in photography for a long time but have only made the move from casual point-and-shoot cameras to using a DSLR just over a year ago when I bit the bullet bought a K-x. After reviewing the competition I couldn't fault Pentax's entry-level DSLR build quality and the backwards compatibility with older (and cheaper) lenses appealed to me!

Since then, I've bought a few lenses (amongst other accessories) to complement the camera
  • Sigma 70-300mm f/3.5-5.6 APO DG

  • Cosina Cosinon Auto MC 135mm f/2.8

  • Pentax-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 WR

  • Pentax-F 50mm f/1.7

  • Sigma Mini-Wide II 28mm f/2.8

After buying the 50mm I couldn't help but feel hooked to using that lens and is almost always attached to my camera - I love the sharpness and bokeh results. I've recently gone away and pre-ordered the K-30 - it was either that or the K-5, but the K-5 is still a little bit more expensive than the K-30. If the K-5 drops in price a little, I may be tempted to switch over however...
