Using manual exposure, it was Sunny 16 bright. Decision #1 was a fast shutter speed to stop motion. Decision #2 was aperture around f8 (with my 2.8 zoom lens), the sharpest part of most lenses. I shoot a lot of theater starting at ISO 3200, so ISO 800 is quite the noise free luxury.
I don't know about "Focus Magic" so I can only accept your forensics. Of course, you're correct, it isn't possible to use a K-5 to track and focus action at 2.8 in dim light.

I've had good results tracking with K-5 bodies.

Nobody is making a high quality TC for Pentax, including Pentax. I bought old stock, new in box from Japan a couple of years ago, Kenko 1.5 Pz AF that works well with my SDM DA 50-135 & screw drive Sigma 100-300/4. They are hard to find so they are expensive. If Pentax would make a good quality TC, people would buy them. Its been on their lens road map a long time.
This surf photo was made with the Kenko & 50-135, I didn't want to add the Sigma to my backpack on airplane. The B-52 concert photo was the Sigma 100-300/4 and the Kenko 1.5 TC.
Sigma does make good quality TCs but they have limited use on even Sigma lenses.

Why not use the Cowboy ( aka NPT 04) trigger? I use them with my Pentax 540 flashes, my Yongnou 560 II and AB 800's alone or all together. The NPT-04 Receiver has a PC port, you just need the right size jack on the other end for the Calumet.

Nope, it's the K-5 thread. Here's exposure 116,227 on my first K-5 body. The second one is only at 99,386.

I have the following hybrid setup and I always & only use manual exposure:
Two Pentax 540 AF flashes - Bought 1 new ( 400 USD) & 1 Used ( 250 USD). I use two cameras at events ( 1 wide & 1 longer lens ) so a flash on each with the " black foamy thing" . Cameras are manual, flashes are set for P-TTL, usually - 1 EV. I also use HSS mode to fill in bright sun. Sometimes I use them in manual mode. The site where you read about the black foamy thing is a very good place to learn about flash
One Yongnuo yn-560 II Flash. This was about 60 USD and is all manual exposure. If I never used P TTL or HSS, I would only buy these. They are about as powerful as the Pentax 540's, swivel & tilt. I bought this as an extra flash for studio work.
All the flashes use 4 AA's I use Powerex batteries & charger, many swear by Sanyo Eneloops.
I have used all 3 with multiple sets of Cowboy Studio aka PT-04 wireless transmitters & receivers, direct purchase or Amazon. These are throw away cheap ( like that drawer of cellphones & remotes) and they work. About 20 bucks a set. I carry 4 sets. The receivers use AAA's ( I use good alkalines) and the transmitter uses a 23A 12 Volt found at any drug or office supply store.
The transmitter goes on the camera hot shoe. The receivers mount on the flash hot shoes or by the sync port which the Youngnou can use. The Pentax flashes have a proprietary sync port so the hot shoe is the way to go.
These units only fire the flash, no other control. Pentax does not offer the wireless capability that Canon & Nikon do.
I have used the transmitter to fire 3 flashes. I use the receivers on my Alien Bee monolights. I have used the monolights & flash together fired by 1 trigger.
The Pocket Wizards that send I-TTL & E-TTl info for Canon & Nikon aren't available for Pentax. Pentax does not currently have PTTL wireless except its own optical capability.
Youngnuo makes flashes that work like Canon & Nikon TTL flashes. Not available for Pentax

Your 70 is fine. Preferable, as long as you have room and outdoors that shouldn't be an issue. Shooting long is desirable. In my portrait business, I use my 50-135 when I can, else a Tamron 28-75 or Pentax 17-70 in that order. Look for used at Keh. The Tamron will be in Pentax 35mm Auto Focus section, the 17-70 in Pentax Digital. The Tamron is a very versatile and very good lens. My well used 6 year old copy is still my bread and butter event lens .

Sorry to lead you astray. LUX or Footcandles are the real measurement and independent of ISO. I always use Sunny 16 as an anchor point. My Digisix meter is always on IS0 100 and gives me an EV. That would change I if changed the meter to ISO something else. I'd be perfectly happy if my meter only measured in ISO 100, don't use the other settings. I have no idea if the meters in my cameras work, i just don't use them.
My mental calculations are based on the simplest possible equation. I know aperture progression so I don't have to remember anything else, just multiply or divide 100 for ISO & Shutter. It's why I only use constant aperture lenses. With the histogram as the modern day Polaroid, it works for me.
I do however use my flash meter (used Gossen Luna Star F2) in studio to save time. That's a different kettle of fish.

So EV 10 is -5 stops from EV15 or Sunny 16 ( f16, ISO 100, 1/100). F8 accounts for -2 stops, 1/250 is about +1 stop. ISO1600 is -4 stops so the net is -5 stops, a correct exposure for EV10. 1/15 sec is 4 stops overexposed for EV10 at f8 and ISO 1600. The computer between my ears will do that calculation.

From Page 366 of a Pentax K-5 manual.
RAW data
Unedited image data output from the CMOS sensor. RAW data is data
before being internally processed by the camera. Camera settings at the
time of capture, such as White Balance, Contrast, Saturation, and
Sharpness can be set for each frame after shooting. In addition, RAW data
is 14 bit data that contain 64 times the information of 8 bit JPEG data. Rich
gradations are possible. Transfer RAW data to your computer and use the
provided software to create image data with different settings, such as
JPEG or TIFF
You don't have to be a pro to want the best possible images. ACR aka LR Develop is where you can control blown out luminance & saturation so it doesn't look like a cartoon and you can see the subject. No matter how good the camera JPEG processing algorithms are, it's still a computer, a machine. It is not a human brain connected to heart and soul. Its exactly why I shoot manual exposure. It isn't very hard to learn a few principles.

You didn't screw up anything. You purchased a very capable tool and need to spend time with the manual to learn about it and then practice using it.
