Is Pentax still appealing for beginners in photography?

I don't know the over all picture but every beginner I have talked to in my photowalk go for a Mirrorless or a phone with good cameras.

Again, this from what I talk to the people I meet, they usually buy it either one or all of the following points: 1. good enough, 2. light enough 3.it fit their budget
and Mirrorless with a kid zoom or Phone often come up as the best fit.

Cool looking CityScape photo. I like the S shape highway which lead viewer eyes to the downtown Seattle.
If it possible, I would try:
1. Using a longer lens next time to skip over the fence and capture only part with a lot of skyscrapers in the middle-right of the image and the highway's curve in-front of it.
2. Or if use the same lens and it is possible to walk closer to the fence I would do it. The fence and the road that run parallel to the fence are a kind of distracting my eyes.

Pentax k70 Is this Camera suited for Astrophotography?

You could count in K3II. It has a built in GPS, no tillable LCD but cheaper than K1. Note that It could be a pain working in the dark with no tillable LCD.

K1 and K1II has builtin GPS and tillable LCD. It could be the best choice if you are willing to spend.

KP and K70 doesn't have a built in GPS so you will have to pay for a separate GPS unit, O-GPS1.

Some good Astrophotography video with Pentax: Video 1 and 5 are directly related to your questions.

Faxai rolling in

I took this photo during hosting a photo walk in Tokyo a day before a category 4 typhoon hit us last year.
I name this post after the typhoon, Faxai .
Typhoon Faxai has a top wind speed of 215 km/h (130 mph). It was in the sea in front of Tokyo when I shot this photo that's why we got this crazy light and cloud during sunset that day. It thought it was a big one to get hit directly in the face, but less than a month later we got another direct hit by a bigger one, typhoon Hagibis which was a Cat-5. I hope we don't have anything like that again during typhoon season this year.

Item for Sale
DFA 100 WR

Asking Price
29,000.00 JPY (around 264USD as of posting date)

Item Location
Tokyo (Japan)

Item Description
Internal elements and glass:
Clean, No haze, No fungus, No scratch, No oil on blades, I can’t spot a dust in there but it is possible. I have a test photo below including lens decentered test.

External:
Barrel has scratches from my regular use since it was brought in 2013. I am the original owner and I have never dropped the lens. It is just very hard to keep metal barrel lenses free of scratch when you use it often. I take photo almost every weekend in the past 5 years and this lens go with me 50-60% of the time. Later, I put a protective film on the lenses as see in the images below. The store said it is the same type of film the US military use on their devices in Iraq. It can be removed without leaving sticky substance on the surface but hope who every buy this lens will keep it on. Because it is a bit pricey and once you remove it, you cannot put it back on.

Focus ring : Smooth
Auto focus: Works as good as any 100wr (read forum review)
Quick-shift: Works well

Lens caps:
Rare cap is a Pentax cap.
Front cap - I lose its o-lc52 (front cap) long ago, so the lens will come with a non-Pentax front cap. It has a better griping than the Pentax o-lc52. See image below.

Other: Comes with original hood - PH-RBE49 | original soft case - S80-120 | original box and all of its documentations.

Extra: A 49 mm male to male adapter ring for doing macro lens stack for greater than 1:1 magnification.

Sample images:
All images are cropped and export from dng file without other post processing except the lens cap image.

SD cards as long term backup?

I would go with mSATA Mini SSD or a typical 3.5'' SSD. SD card make me nervous. You know sometime you delete images or files and it just go away. Not in trash can, it just gone and can not be recovered. With traditional HDD or SSD, you still have an option to recover it. many free tool on internet to DIY when things really go bad.

I would say, The brand is definitely not rare in Japan. Everyone seems to know the brand. but I can feel seeing a lot fewer people using the camera compare to 5 years ago.

As for People outside of Japan I meet over the year;
When I just start a small weekend Photo-tour, I thought I would eventually meet an international Pentax user. +150 people later (not a Japanese, not a foreigner live in Japan), I meet ZERO international Pentax shooter. More than often, the first Pentax they have ever seen in action is my camera. So for all major brands which still actively make FF, APSC or 4/3 body, I have not yet meet Pentax, and... Sigma (if they still make a camera).

A7RII vs K-1

First of all, I am not a Pentax fanboy. I have never been a fanboy of anything I use and I have never called myself a Pentaxian although using it since Z1. I was thinking about moving to Sony Mirror-less full-frame a while ago and asked myself a similar question. I sold most of my lenses and ready to jump the ship late last year, but the more I look into A7's family the more I feel like I shouldn't go there. So I still keep my option open.

Here are 4 most important things for me:
Dynamic range: Pentax use Sony sensor, so it is not much to debate here. I like what Sony is doing on their sensor technology and thank them develop the technology for another brand to use as well. But sometimes I am surprised at how far they push their own tech on their camera too. The Pixelshift video posted by @jgnfld is a good example.

Lense prices: To me, the lenses I will likely buy if I move to Sony are way way too expensive for a hobbyist. Note that I want Autofocus lenses. As I live in Japan; it is a lot more for me to select both new & used, digital era & film era on Pentax's land. You better look into the list of lenses you want too. A lot of my Sony friend have only 1 or 2 native lenses and they look at my (used to have) collection with envy eyes, lol.

Weather seal: No, I am not always shooting in the rain ... but I like to shoot in the rain and do it often. I have been using the K3 during typhoon days. Rain and wind are a lot worse than in this video

You Tube

Typhoon type of rain is not a problem with the K3 so I expect K1 to be as good or even better.

Size and weight: This is a debatable area for me. Weight and size when talking about body + lenses, Sony is still a winner to me but not much because K1 body might be heavier but I don't have a taste for larger heavier lenses anyway. So again, It is a lot of good older Pentax autofocus lenses in the market. I can save myself a lot of Grams and $$$ using those options. (Yes, I like good lenses and I know about the modern lenses' design for digital sensor arguments but I couldn't care less about the few pixel on the 4 corners of the image.)

I am still using K3 and looking for an alternative lighter FF body that's why I have an idea of moving to A7 options in the first place and found out things I mention above after really look into it. A kind of coming back to a full circle! (And Yes, CP+ early 2019 was just another disappointment for me which I am a kind of sick and tired of it.)

Anyway, ask yourself what matter for you most and what brand has the better solutions. You might come up with a different answer than me.

What's the highest rated lens you own according to PF?

I used to have a FA50 macro. It is using the same optic design as your F50 macro and it is rated at 9.7 which is higher than the other 2 modern lenses i have DA*55 - 9.19 and DFA100wr - 9.64

I wish I were as lucky as you get the F50maco for free! Don't let it go. Try it at night and see its starburst. Not sure how well the F can do but my FA macro made incredible star burst. It is a shame, it only has 6 blades.

I sold my copy and buy a DA*55 because it is a WR lens and light. Well... I only wish it handled flare better than this or at least as good as the FA50 macro. Other than that, I have no complain. ... Wait... Starburst too. :D FA50 macro did way way better in this department.

Yes it can be used on a FF body. You might want to get an off brand shorter hood.
some even compare it with the new DA*50 which it perform pretty well.

I will definitely get a new Pentax apsc flagship body if it coming out this year. I am not even care what will be in there. I am sure it will be a significant improvement.

Anything after 2019... The question for me will be changed to, if i will still be with the brand.

A piece of more information since some mentioned about Flange distance which I agree, it is very important on this topic.

[Flange distance / total thickness - all in mm]
A7III 18 / 74
KP 45.46 / 76
K1 45.46 / 85.5
K1000 film 45.46 / 48. * Edit

Sony uses up to 56mm after subtraction of its Flange distance.
KP uses 30.54mm
K1 uses 39.5mm
.

There is no way K-mount body will get to the same thickness as of 7AIII but KP/76mm is pretty close to 74mm of A7III. And my main point is, Can K1 go down to a similar size as of KP?

If you read the interview by Pentaxforums at CP+2019. Look closely at Q9. I am highly speculated (or fantasizing it, you decide!) that they are trying something like that somewhere in the basement of Ricoh building in Tokyo, miniature FF DSLR to the size of SLR. !!!

And on another point, I recently found this image online. Left a crop mirrorless body Vs Right 1972 SLR with mirror box in it + pentaprism on the head. The overall thickness doesn’t look that much difference. It is a crop vs ff body we are seeing here.

https://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/omd-em5/ZCOMPOM1TOP.JPG

1. Is it possible concerning the technology at hand today to have FF DSLR built in the size of the KP body? (and still can do everything KP or K3II does.) I remember reading something similar and back then one of the speculations was the SR system, but now as we see from Sony A7III. It has a built-in 5-Axis image stabilization. Sony proves that it possible now.

2. what needs to be sacificed to achieve such a small size?
I am just thinking out loud here. Let me know your thoughts.

I am more focus on physical size and weight of the Digital FF body today because that will make or break me with the brand. Hope it won't be turned to Mirrorless vs DSLR things. Focus on what possible, not possible to make it physically as small/light as a good old-time SLR body.

Any experience with Pentax replacement focusing screens?

I have the ME-60 you mentioned. I used to use it with K-5.
it is a clean blank screen and it doesn't seem to affect my K-5 meter. it is a genuine Pentax screen, so you don't have to worry it will affect camera light meter in a bad way.

As for helping manual focus...or not... I guess it is just for marketing. to me, as some already said, it doesn't help me manual focus at all.

And I think it helps me compost image a bit by not having any line printed on. Maybe I should put it back on. I left it in its box for years already.

I have the same problem a few times.
I have soot in heavy rain, typhoon type of wind and rain. If it is moisture, you will see another symptom too. The autofocus likely stops working and or you can visibly see internal condensation built up either on the viewfinder or on a photo you take, but the shutter will keep working. K3 is a mini tank. It will keep going.

I would say it is likely a battery problem. When it happens, remove the battery, put a new one and restart the camera.
I recommend keeping an eye on the battery. If it happens again with the same battery, don't keep using it. just get a new battery. At first, it was very random in my case. but when it happens, it is always with the same battery.

The genuine battery cames with my K-3 cause the problem when the power shows about one bar. Sometimes, I would say a weak 2 bar.
My K-5 battery which is older but never causes a problem. I can use until the battery icon turns red. It took me a while to find out that it was a battery problem.
