Tips on portrait retouching?

Soften pores by dodging with the dodge tool on 1% flow for both shadows and mid-tones.

Do that on a new layer and constantly compare the new layer to the original one so you don't overdo it. Unless you can still see pores, the image won't look real.

The DA* 300mm F4 plus 1.4X teleconverter will give you great reach and IQ at the cost of slower autofocus than you want.

It is a good tradeoff IMHO. You will have some frustrating misses from slow AF but when you nail shots, you will really nail them.

I shoot with a K1 and some fairly nice glass. Barely a month goes past when somebody doesn't say: ' Sooooo you are obviously keen on photography... When are you going to get a Canon or Nikon?' I always thank them for their advice. They are caring people and don't want me to be held back by inferior equipment.

It is magical on full frame. Really beautiful IQ. You don't lose much when you use it with the 1.4X teleconverter either, although obviously that means going to crop frame.

People are very helpful and lots of them ask when I am going to get a proper camera - you know, Canon or Nikon.

I explain that I ALWAYS have to be different and shooting Pentax is different.

Who wants to be normal?

Fast 85mm lens?

Nobody in their right mind sells a 77. Apart from not focussing quickly enough to be a great dance lens, it is perfect.

That said, I;m hanging out for the DFA 85mm.

Try just looking through the viewfinder of a K1. Everything is brighter and clearer.

DFA 85mm F1.4 bt if Sigma wants to do an Art series of that (plus a 135mm F2 or F2.8), I will be more than satisfied.

I had to part with my K3ii so a replacement for that with lots of grunt under the bonnet would also be cool.

K-50 skin smoothing option?

Don't assume you always want to sharpen eyes and soften skin. If you shoot for sharp eyes, they usually don't need anything done in PP. Also, don't assume you always want to soften skin. A professional makeup job will usually mean very little needs doing in PP.

Check out Anita Sadowska's videos on youtube on fashion retouches.

My photography teacher, Peter Coulson, has website tutorials (subscriber ones unfortunately) on his techniques. He is very anti the usual defocussing techniques for skin smoothing and uses dodge and burn techniques instead. Those are very important for no make-up fashion looks. You can see the results on his main (free) webpage peter-coulson.come.au

Pentax K-1ii VS Sony A7iii (Am I switching to the dark side?)

I love my K1. The AF is great and it is not too heavy. If you think Sony would be better, then jump ship. We'll welcome you back in a year or two.

If you haven't been to Austin TX yet, put it high on your list. Beautiful city with friendly people. Beautiful countryside around it.

I haven't seen the rest of Texas but a fellow Aussie did a raod trip with his wife and said the rest of it is as friendly as Austin but with slightly different politics and lotsa, lotsa guns.

Look through a viewfinder on a K1. Then look through any electronic viewfinder. I rest my case.

Need advice for a shoot

Take both and try both. Experiment a bit and get lotsof different shots

Try shooting your friends with just the ambient lighting. You'll get some shots which are mostly silhouettes and others with more facial detail.

To get detail in your subjects' faces use some flash. I would mostly keep the camera on the tripod and use just a touch of manual flash on their faces with the exposure times varied to make your backgrounds lighter or darker..

43 ltd for landscape? Or other options...

My favourite landscape lens for wider views, especially on the K1.

Very light (unlike the Sigma 35mm) so first choice when cycling and hiking. When I head to my local island getaway (French Island), the 43mm and 300mm are always in the bag.

DA*200 f2.8 for landscape - any experiences?

I have found my DA*200mm F2.8 more useful since moving to the K1. I think it is great for landscape details, still life and head-and-should portraits..

One of our (Australia's ) great landscape photographers, Peter Dombrovskis, moved towards landscape details later in his career. Check out his work. If you like it, I think you will like shooting with the K1/ DA*200mm combo.

Greylag geese are a great subject. Very inquisitive and friendly.

Please don't lure them with bread though. If you are going to feed pond birds to get them to pose for you, a small handful of peas, corn or poultry feed will be good for them and won't interfere with with their normal diet.

What's a decent budget DSLR for a newbie?

I've just sold my K7. It is a fine camera if you can stick to lower ISOs but it wasn't getting any love after the K3ii (now also sold : ( ) and K1 (you can take it from my cold dead hands) came along.

I don'tthink you would regret getting either the K7 or K5 but I think I would recommend spending the bit extra on the K5.

If you are using vintage lenses, live view will be great. A K5 would give you lots of room for your photography to grow.

Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 or Pentax DA* 55mm 1.4

I had the Sigma 35mm F1.4 when I had the K3ii. Wonderful lens but it didn't get as much work as the FA 43mm F1.9. When I needed money to pay for my K1, I sold the Sigma.

I think you would love the Sigma for artistic shots, like still life shots and it is also very good for cityscapes and landscapes. On APS-c, the Sigma is good for group portraits and environmental portraits but really too wide for most portrait work. I think you would get more out of the 55mm for portraits.
