As many have suggested, your shots are great, and with just a little less 'HDR' like processing, it would even be better. I too find that most of that has to do with saturation of color (example, red and orange). I also find skin tone a little less enticing, but then again, I am not sure how close would it be to the actual skin tone on the people. FWIW, I am also a Lightroom user and shoot lots of events, I have recently used Silkypix ver 6.0... and find that to be extremely useful in post-processing to correct skin tones, color profile and also default noise reduction straight from RAW. From now on, I use LR only for addiing watermarks and reduce the size of the JPG photos. Again, the shots you took are great, don't let anyone discourage you.

That's an unusual sky there. I like the composition's simplicity and other earthly quality.

I have the smc Pentax-DA f/4 55-300mm zoom :/ its SLOW when it comes to focusing. It hunts like a mad beast and the manual focus on it sucks. I'd recommend the lens for still shots in very good weather (its a good weather lens for sure).
Imo you are best served by getting the 300 mm prime. The 300 mm is a godly lens :P...or so i hear / read.
Never owned the sigma so I have no idea about that.
