On a walk into the wilds yesterday afternoon, 130km from home, I was minding my own business sizing up a scene when footsteps approached from behind.

I turned around and an older bearded fellow (70+?) strolled up, announcing himself with a toothy smile and thickly-accented 'Hello!' (German?).

Around his neck, attached to his belt and stuffed into his cargo pants I counted 11 cameras, just by standing there, confounded by the scene.. There might have been more; it is the first time I have seen anybody in the middle of nowhere with so many cameras (Minolta SRT101s could be seen, along with a Canon A1 and two Nikons of ancient vintage and a Zenit!). He disappeared clicking and clacking (the noise of cameras banging into each other!) into the tall forest. My scene was framed up, composed and shot, then returned to the car — one camera, 2 shots.

My mind was occupied with thoughts of hope that the man with the bushy beard and cameras galore got at least one pic with the right camera for the task.

I knew a guy who used a forklift to change the oil on his wife's VW beetle. Instead of grubbing about on the ground, he'd just pick it up and drain the oil comfortably.

I had the opportunity to buy a very nice used forklift a few years ago....
When I told my wife about it, she asked the obvious question, what will you use it for? She wasn't impressed when I told her I could use it to rearrange the crates of camera gear in my warehouse storage.
Needless to say, I didn't buy the forklift.

The sky had clouded over, the bird was deep under a layer of foliage, I could barely see it through the viewfinder! But the K3 iii and the 150-450mm D FA delivered! (With some help from Photolab 5 !!!)

Man, I can just hear this conversation.

"Her: Another damn breakfast by myself. Just wait till he gets home!"

He flutters in like everything is normal, and she gets him with an evil eye.

With fire in her eyes her voice screeches out:: "Where you been all night and don't you lie. I know all about that red-shouldered hussy! Don't you turn away from me, I got sumpin' for you and you gonna listen!"

All he can do is hang his head.

Unfortunately, there is some out of focus foreground caught in the lower half of this pic, but I hope the wings make up for that.

I could barely make out this primarily dark bird in the shadows through the viewfinder, but the K3 iii and the Monster got the job done.

This represented a first for me - for both spotting and photographing this bird, spotted in a nearby suburb.

They lied to you: You shouldn’t always keep ISO as low as possible

The article makes some good points but hardly a revelation.

When we shot film we would pick the ISO (or ASA for those of a certain age :) ), that suited the task in hand. Bright sunny day with a reasonably fast lens go for 64 slide or 100 negative. Action shots with a longer slower lens or poor ambient light and we would reach for the 400 or 800 canister, and maybe throw some push processing in too for good measure.

Today, digital sensors cannot change their base ISO or sensitivity as the article suggests, but dialling in a higher ISO increases the gain that the processor applies. This will increase noise.

Where I agree with the article is that you should always aim for a well exposed photo. So if shooting in poor light, or using a narrow aperture, or need to keep the shutter speed high, then you should be using a higher ISO to start with. Like Mike, I like to use TAv mode, usually when shooting moving subjects especially in changing light.

Mike also makes good points about artistic intent. If your picture requires a wide depth of field then often you need to use a higher ISO, especially if you have no tripod, or you need to keep the shutter speed up.

One of the tools we have these days with digital is the ability to reduce noise in PP, especially selectively. So the takeaway is we should always use an ISO that is appropriate for the scene. I have been doing that for many years :)

For a good number of years now I've been shooting mostly in TAv mode (at least for natural / ambient light photography), choosing aperture and shutter speed for artistic intent (depth of field, motion freezing or blurring, etc.) and letting ISO float wherever it may - the logic being that the artistic aspects are essential to what I'm trying to capture. The resulting ISO will determine dynamic range, noise and therefore detail, with noise and detail (and any cropping) limiting the dimensions at which the final image is acceptable to me... but I typically prefer to compromise on image quality and useable dimensions rather than creative flexibility.

Of course, there are occasions where capturing the widest possible dynamic range and/or minimising noise are especially important, in which case I'll consider my compromises more carefully... but generally speaking, I'll accept whatever ISO is necessary and the image quality limitations therein.

Many of my photos are at high ISOs, with some of my favourites being between ISO 3200 - 6400 and a small few higher still. You wouldn't want to view them up close at large dimensions, but at picture-book or laptop screen sizes, they look great...

DxO users: which extra Pentax/Ricoh lens/camera modules do you want?

Here's what DxO staffer Marie replied 3 hours ago to my support request:

"Both Pentax 50mm F1.4 will be supported in September. I will look for the (HD FA, my addition) 35mm as well. I can’t say about the (HD DA 10-17mm) fish-eye for now."

So, it would seem they haven't lost us completely on their radar.

Firmware 2.0 for K-3 III and K-3 III Monochrome

I just want to commend Pentax on doing real firmware updates for the K-3 III. In the past, most of what we have seen after the first six months were the addition of lens profiles and bug fixes, but not much of real substance. It's nice to see Pentax continuing to improve the functionality of the K-3 III, even a couple of years down the road.

Interval Composite on K-3iii

I had a play with the K-3iii interval setting recently - please find below my findings, which I hope are helpful. As you see, some of the setting provide multiple exposure type effects.

Interval Shooting
The camera records within one folder, each separate timed image.
Interval Composite Shooting
Composite Unblended Setting
A full set of separate timed shots are recorded, plus an extra image is generated, where the subject in the first shot is shown normally and images from subsequent shots are shown ‘ghosted’, as would be seen in a multiple exposure. All the images are in one folder.
Blended Setting
A full set of separate timed shots are recorded. In each image, the subject from the first shot is shown normally and images from subsequent shots are shown ‘ghosted’, as would be seen in a multiple exposure. All the images are in one folder.
Off Setting
Only one composite image is generated in one folder. The subject from the first shot is shown normally and images from subsequent shots are shown ‘ghosted’, as would be seen in a multiple exposure.
