I think this is the eastern spinebill - Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris. I got these shots on a recent holiday to a place near Melbourne. This interesting bird was feeding on flowers - it is a type of honeyeater - in the diggers garden at Heronswood.

I got to this location much later than originally planned ( 9:30 or so instead of 8:30) - the day started out bright and sunny, but by the time I started to get any real bird photo opps, the day turned, not just cloudy, but dark overcast cloudy, robbing all my shots of bright fun colours........

Grand Canyon really shines around 5h30 in the morning and 8h00 in the evening. I was standing on the rim just before sundown. The wind had picked up and the temperature was dropping fast. Haze became visible in the abyss. Water vapor from the Colorado River below or smog carried by the wind from the Los Angeles basin ?? Anyway, the "light show" lasted for about 15 minutes with few people around at this particular viewpoint.
Pentax K1 + DFA 28-105 mm HD at 105 mm FL and f/11. What a marvelous zoom lens !!

Surprised to see it at this location. The small man-made pond/lagoon whatever at this location has been dry for most of the last 4-6 yrs (since I got back into photography, in fact!)
But this same pond was full today, and the ground behind it soaked and squishy (technical term  ) underfoot.
For a brief second it was out in the open, crossing a walk path. Two shots, one useless, the other, here for you all. K3P25559_DxO-1 |

The FA* 80-200 is heavy but has power zoom if that helps you. It probably pairs well with the HD DA 1.4x on the K-3. I don't own one anymore but I have tried the power zoom in the past and it's nice enough. You might need to add a clamp with a lever to get enough leverage to operate it with a finger.
If you were to leave Pentax the Panasonic 45-175 on an m43 camera would be an option. It's also power zoom enabled.

N700S Supreme by RobGeraghty, on Flickr
Kodama 725 by RobGeraghty, on Flickr
My wife and I took Kodama 725 to Shizuoka. It turned out to be an N700S Supreme, the latest model on the Tokaido line between Tokyo and Osaka. Although the Kodama is the slowest Tokaido line service, it's top speed is exactly the same as the faster services; the Hikari and Nozomi. It is only slower because it stops at every station. In between stations, it gets to 285 kmh. The N700S has been tested at up to 360 kmh, but no trains in Japan currently operate at that speed. The fastest is the E5/H5 which reaches 320 kmh. This train set, J29, was made by Hitachi in 2022.

Having some time to spend, and seeing birds going from a tree branch to land at a finding station in the garden, I decided to try catching these landings.
I needed to be close enough to the bird, but the field of view has to be wide enough to catch the entire bird evolution to be sure it will be in th frame. (Bird trajectory is difficult to predict)
Some view tests told me that my K200 f2,5 (300mm on APS-C) would be ok for the shooting distance (10 feets).
The 2,5 aperture permits to shoot with minimal exposure time / not so high ISO. The manual focusing is perfect to pre-focus the target area.
The equipment: K30 + K200 f2,5 mounted on tripod with wired remote trigger. Pictures are taken through a double bend house window.
The way of doing:
K30 in AV mode, so the pictures are taken wide open with tis K lens (f2,5) - ISO 1600 -> exposure times were all between 1/5000 and 1/6000.
Focusing by advance on the feeding station area....waiting while watching directly the scene (not in the viewfinder)....depress remote control at the moment the bird leaves the branch to land at the station. (little birds are very fast and spend few tenths of second to go from the branch to the station).
I didn't use the continus shooting of the K30 thinking it would waste dozens of pictures and make less fun to do.:):) |

There were two of these and they came in really low and buzzed the lake. I would say at one point they were 20 feet off the water and then flew away. PK3B4478 by David Green, on Flickr PK3B4487 by David Green, on Flickr

Came across this fellow on a recent walk. They immediately took to the trees to keep an eye on me. Still one of the nicest looking birds around here.
