We rode Nine-o-Nine a couple of months ago. That was fun. Incidentally, I shot the interior with my K5 and a Tammy 10-24. Now......if I could just remember how to pop up a pic on this site......

I suppose in Nikon Land, "Crop Mode" is code for "Buffer Depth Mode". I run a couple V1's, and one of the fun aspects of them is their deep buffer. I HAD been looking over to Nikon from my K5 with a mind toward simplifying my kit and swapping lenses. I'd have jumped into a Nikon DSLR months ago, but in a world of compromises....Nikon offered me no solution. The old taketh away problem has landed Nikon in a bit of a poke with me. Pentax just delivered me the D400 I was looking for. I already have have the lenses! It doesn't matter what Nikon puts out, should they choose to do so, as a real D300 replacement. Pentax just trumped them, and possibly Canon as well.
All I do now is sit and wait for the reviews to come out by our own people on our own forum...(feelin' that, DP?)....before I swiftly and with great joy send money to Pentax.

Really, a shame about Nikon. I'm shaking my head as I type this. Pentax gives it the beans, while Nikon constantly tries to upsell me by holding back on reasonable functionality.

The only gotcha that took me a while coming from a K200D-and not at all related- was that saving a user setting is done after you've set up your parameters. I kept trying to enter into a setting mode, THEN making all the adjustments. Bonehead? Yup. That's life. Otherwise be sure to drink your Ovaltine while you confirm your latest firmware and upgrade if needed. What else? You'll get about 460 shots on a 16 gig card in RAW. The cheap Meike grip has served me quite well. Wasabi batteries along with their AC/DC charger is muy bueno. I like to try to standardize my control wheels, i.e front wheel is aperture value and rear is shutter speed......generally. Heck, I shoot TAv. I'm simple like that. Set aside time to shoot. Have the manual with you and don't be shy to look things up. Glossary. The manual can't go into the detail you seek, because any variation in settings leads to a new host of compromises that would have to be fleshed out-----and down the rabbit hole you'll go.

When frustrated with any machine:
1) Show the machine the cranial parking spot for your huge frontal lobe. Machine should be suitably impressed.
2) Demonstrate to the machine your articulated opposable thumbs. Machine will retreat to a corner and cower.
3) Command machine to do your bidding. See? Easy!

I just happened by B&H to see what the order/preorder status is on the new bodies. I'm not in the market at the moment....still on honeymoon with a K5. BUT!!!!!! I was staggered to see about 7 pages of product offering for Pentax DSLR's. Curious, I made it past the first few pages and found myself in K50 Wonka Factory. Pukealicious colors and tones!. Pentax is going to catch customers like fishing lures catch fishermen. (Yes, I know what I just typed. Think about it.)
Now all Pentax needs is a marketing blitz. I know, I'm laughing too.

I'm not being dour. Really, it is pretty exciting.

K3 now.

Geez, tell me about it. We've had our feeder out for 3 weeks. I saw a Calliope, and got passed by last weekend while testing a 10-24 on a stick. Voom......gone. Oh, well. Air show this weekend! I shot them all before (the planes), but this year should have a Zero up. Not looking to hijack a thread. I tend towards shooting things that generate lift.

Just came to me: have you tried a hummingbird call? I have one. It sounds like a goober saying, "Heeeeeeere birdiebirdiebirdie". You may try the same until more of absolutely nothing happens. Well, until you wind up in a YouTube vid your neighbor took. Fun for all.:p

Your lens is clearly good enough, judging by your samples. I'd say get a tripod and a remote release before you sweat another lens. I have a rationale.....see, the birds are essentially stationary objects in the scheme of things. You're not tracking osprey here. Treat it like a landscape. Pick a feeder-pick a "flower" with the best light for an incoming hummer. Frame the "flower" in a lower 1/3ish point and prefocus. Shoot and chimp to confirm your DOF. Put the ISO to your max taste/ noise tolerance to get shutter speed and aperture headroom. I'm thinking 1600 to 3200. Dial in shutter as you have been, maybe a touch faster. Any wiggle room can be applied to a smaller aperture. Adjust to taste. About 2/3, maybe a bit more of the hit zone should be hummer approach area. With the shutter on rat-a-tat mode, and no further focus enabled, wait. Grab a beverage. Scratch an itch. Then sneak back to your set-up and await your quarry.
I might be wrong.....and best of continued luck. Hummers are tough!

A few tidbits, my apparent southernly neighbor. Since yesterday, I confirmed that you are who I suspected you are. Few can YouTube Pentax and not run across your vids. I've watched and enjoyed several. I have no real criticisms-don't forget the huge contingent of "photographers" (both pro and AM) who view camera as fashion accessory. OMG, Becky....Look....at....the....V2's butt......
Like totally. What's the old saying....don't bitc* unless you have a solution to offer.......
I'm not being random. We don't know what kind of person is going to level criticism our way. Blow it off, walk away.

I noted with (wait! Tangent alert!) some more- than- passing- interest your vid on debt slavery. Right in line, Baby! Don't care about Ramsey. Don't need a guru telling me it isn't polite to fart in church.
The wake-up to the concept of slavery is a real face slapper, huh? See, I'm out of the woods, too. I just went through the decision bracket to see if I would benefit from going over (more) to the Dark Side, but ....... /.......and the point is that this auto mechanic can afford a D800 if'n he so chooses. Yeah, having the money as a result of personal awareness and discipline is the way to shake it. I consider my possibilities 'cuz I can. I worked hard to get here, too. I'm 41. I did it, and can buy hard into my hobbie. Sweet Lord, I may just travel!
As for a D800 (or others). No. I agree with your approach to needs and benefits of what the K5/ii/iis hold. Pentax may not offer 10 camera lines, but they don't seem to hold back on what they put into what IS offered.
I'm a horrible typist. You've no idea how long it took to write this somewhat incoherent post.

Back on topic- the decision flow chart leads to Pentax. Simple logic, but a person needs to know and understand RESOLUTION. "Meh- it's all relative!" Once the average Jose "gets" resolution, the rest of the decision falls into place. Super simple Simon. Hey, I gotta go. We got up late from catting about at the opera last night. Now the gurlz iz hammering me with the BAD kind of techno. I like it better when they sleep. Besides, I suppose I should get to canning some meatballs.
Oh, that IS relevant. Home Economics is tied at the hip to debt slavery.....its that slavery that keeps the haters complaining about the cost of gear. mmmmmmmm. canning meatballs.

Got a 50-500 OS coming this week. Wish me luck. It's rabbit season. It's duck season. It's airshow season. Oh, baby!

FF Under Development

About what I was thinking. I have a V1 and love the outright performance of it. Really, I could care less about the jump to FF- I see FF becoming the Medium Format standard of what's to come. I feel APS-C is the "35mm" of the Digital sensors. Smaller sensors are pulling forward, giving us smaller kits with very nice performance parameters. Were Pentax to meld a V1 with a k5...... On-chip PDAF sans mirror with a heeeeeeeeuge EVF (upsized from what is considered acceptable), K5 build and feel. I'd be on it. As it stands, the new K5ii isn't enough for me to really be interested in. Grow a set, Pentax. Your next camera needs to be a leap over Canikon. Innovate, and quickly.
Nikon could build one today if they weren't so chicken about cannibalizing sales. Narrow, narrow thinking.

I checked Gizmodo this morning to find a piece on the Mk2. They are saying intro price body only is $1200. I have no problem with that. Do I recall correctly that the K5 was closer to $1800? No matter. I'll be hanging on to my K5 for a good while longer, happy knowing that when I do get a new Mk2 it'll not require 1/2 a totally new kit for a grip and batteries.( let alone lenses if a system-abandonment was in the cards ) Still, I would have much preferred a faster processor.
I only reentered Pentax recently, having a K200D in the mix already. Save minor irritations, the K5 is a great fit for me. Mk2 will just be a little better at a price I'll like when I finally get around to wanting new.

A MK2..... Worked fine for Canon with the 5D series. I like the idea of a massage to a known good. I went from a K200D to the K5 after several stops along the way. For my part, the focus is just good enough on the K5. What chaps me is the lack of responsiveness I get when trying to cycle through commands.
A greatly improved buffer processing would be a pleasure. My V1 spanks the heck out of the K5 in matters of sheer interface and processing responsiveness. Leave the sensor alone. Pick up the pace otherwise, and price it like there might be an economic slowdown here and there.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my V1. In my hands and with my admittedly lesser processing skills, it just beat the pants off the GH2 I recently let go of. Still, Nikon couldn't get me into the D7000 with the K5 still available.

I'll tell you Rondec, that's certainly what I hope for. I buy my cars with a 20 year ownership horizon. It kills me to have a revolving door in camera land. I'd surely like to keep the K5 and V1. The V1 is the first camera I would immediately and unquestioningly replace. I'd like that confidence with K5.

No, I wasn't. Pentax is in no position to bring you heavy innovation at this time. Further, they clearly are reluctant to mix stills with video. Only too happy to give them my money on that basis alone.
GH3 is rumored. Maybe it'll be a video unit with a cell phone stills cam to complete the package....kinda going where we've been thing....camera OR video recorder (gen1),camera with video (gen2), camera and video (gen 3), video with camera (gen4), camcorder OR camera (gen5-1). Evolution at it's finest.
I just left m43. Great idea, really proud pricing, especially of late. Seems people are buying the newer units as bling. Bling is expensive. Little CMOS chips? Not so much. Hmmmmmm.
