If you are concerned about atrocities, read up on the Japanese army in China---or what happened to innocent Chinese at Japanese hands after the Raiders blew through Tokyo to try and land in China----or speculate on what would have happened had Japan not surrendered before the ground was taken by dead Marines with a bayonet and a rifle. War is an ugly business, and we insulate ourselves from its reality because the universal draft is no longer in business. We need politicians who have pulled a trigger before they argue for armed sanctions against a foreign power. Reality check.

You are all skipping History 101. Britain invaded Iran years before the Second World War, reducing Iran's navy to wrecks and seizing the oil fields to the west. Later, we entered Iran and built a transport highway supported with heavy RR freight to deliver aircraft, fuel and tanks from the Red Sea all the way to Russia. We have used Iran for a long time, and it is scarcely surprising that they are tired of us.

And then the tragedy in Denver this morning. We have a tendency to know in our hearts when someone is crazy, or alienated, or needs help----but we are singularly unable to reach out and investigate their need. Had we snatched the man off the street, none of this would have happened at something as innocent as a movie.

This is rural property, in a county with good deputies who patrol more than there share of geography. Response time is going to be the best they can. But what could I do with feral coy dogs, feral pigs, and feral humans without a gun. And that doesn't include the real danger of indigenous snakes who might not intend to hurt you but can kill abruptly. Nope, there is a gun on my desk and a rifle in the front room. I am safer that way. Do I hunt, no, although I do carry a full license to hunt, and fish anything in this state. Hunting is controlled by hunting licence sales, which in turn pay for whatever support our ecosystem gets. It is accurate to say that gun owners support the right to hunt or at least the opportunity which in turn promotes a stable and controlled wild population.

The Arthur Teacher fish monger beret is just homely, well, really the whole paramilitary look is tasteless and tacky. I suspect the team would have looked better wearing shirts made by Pendleton, and denims made in America. WM used to advertise that they bought the product in America, but that passed by the wayside when the old man died. Truey ugly uniforms, though.

I was very sorry to see the headlines this morning about the tragedy in Toronto. Very sad.

If my brother and I had taken up lying, my grandmother would have disturbed our 'childhood' with the flat of her hand. Just sayin'.

I don't think we have a culture of killing, but instead of hard work and achievement making a man, a cheap Saturday night special or a stolen Judge will do it. Children no longer tassel corn, boys don't buck hay bales, girls don't know how to lay out a dress pattern or set a table. But American and Canadian children and their off shore partners can sure play violent, mind numbing video games. When a violent act occurs and the perpetrator is actually caught, we go all Clarence Darrow and blame everyone except the bad guy. The Blue Nose is gone now, and Gloucester is fished out. Never again will salt dried cod weigh down a schooner to her wash ports. We don't do with or for our kids, and violence is always easy and reinforced by peer groups married to HALO.

I am pretty sure that I will never financially be able to upgrade to the Pentax 5 or the Pentax 30, so it's a moot point-----but in the field, no one puts on more airs than a Canon user with a white lens. Too often, a camera is bought for the label on the body, but never exploited or learned well enough to live up to its reputation.

Rugged and durable in the field, the Pentax takes a back seat to no camera made. Cannot say enough about the performance of my Pentax.

He didn't die for my sins or yours. He died because a loaded weapon was available to an unsupervised pre-schooler. I am deeply saddened for the family, especially the child who will never emotionally recover. But if a weapon is not in your hand, it needs to be unloaded, the magazine removed and the round chambered extracted. A moment of caution would have meant everything here.
