K30 Grip vs K5 Grip
Posted By CMG

Thanks! Can you please describe the changes to the K30 grip vs K5 grip in terms of contour? One of the problems I had with the K5 grip was that, to me, it was quite square and lacked all around contour front, side and back. I found myself having to contort my hand to access controls and after a half hour of that it was just too uncomfortable to shoot. Thanks!

K30 Grip vs K5 Grip

Well, I sold my K5. One of the primary reasons was that I found the grip to be very uncomfortable no matter how I held it. This of course made shooting with this otherwise great camera quite unpleasant. My hands are average or a bit larger than average. Anyhow, my question is if and how does the K30 grip compare to the K5? I am without a camera now and despite the many models on the market, I'm thinking about a K30 or Sony a57 or a65. If the K30 grip is basically the same as the K5, then it may not be the right move for me.

I've been really impressed with my 18-55 WR kit lens lately. I think it is quite a capable lens. It has also made me really appreciate what a zoom lens can offer. Anyhow, as a companion "normal" prime I have the FA31 & DA40 ltds. I really only want to keep one of them. I realize they are different lenses....I like the small size of the DA relative to the FA31 & 18-55. For some reason, I'm hesitant to give up the FA but I don't know why. Obviously it's great fast glass, but so is the DA only a bit slower. Which of these primes would you keep and which would sell?

Optics Question

In laypersons terms, how do the optics of a film lens differ from that of a digital lens and what are the practical implications of using a film lens on a digital camera APS-C or FF?

MX "PASSED" Sticker

Received my MX today. Beautiful machine! Purchased on ebay. This camera looks and sounds brand new. I'm going to send it off to Eric for a checkup anyhow...I think. Question, not that it much matters, but how do you know if the little gold customs "PASSED" sticker is original? Mine has the sticker on it and it shows sufficient age to be original but there is an outline around the sticker that seems to indicate that the sticker has moved over the years from handling or there was another sticker on it originally or something. Any thoughts?

FA Limiteds

Luckily! I picked up the MX just because prices are already crazy and probably getting crazier. Much to my surprise when I checked the mail today, the MX arrived. If you told me it was brand new, I'd probably believe it. Well see what Eric says when I send it to him, but it's super clean and snappy all around. Anyhow, I popped on my FA31 just to have a look and I must say that what I see when the FA31 is mounted on the MX is quite amazing. It looks like a super sharp wide angle lens...wait...that's what it is...except on my K-5. Without even shooting a roll of film, which I don't have, I can now begin to see what all the fuss is and, IMHO, you cannot really see this unless you mount it on a 35mm camera. So, where does that leave me? It leaves me using my DA Ltds. most of the time, trying to figure out how to work with film in a reasonably economical way in order to get the best out of my FA Ltds, and waiting to see if Pentax ever puts out a FF that is not astronomically expensive. Regarding an FF camera and FA Ltds, the question remains, at least for me, how do the optics of a film lens differ from the optics of a digital lens and how do these differences affect your exposures and renderings. I have no idea, but hopefully someone can address this question.

I'm excited to work with film, but frankly I have not idea how I can make it cost effective.....particularly in terms of getting negatives scanned so I can tweak them if necessary and print at home.

Interesting point. I think you are probably correct that if Pentax does introduce a FF it will re-release these lenses and D-FA or something like that. Do you know, from an optics perspective, how the construction of film lenses differs from the construction of digital lenses and how that impacts backward/forward compatibility in terms of the exposure?

Filters

I use Marumi SHG Protective filters on my lenses for, you guessed it, protection. I haven't noticed a difference in the rendering, that's not a conclusion about the effect of the filter rather just a statement of what I see. Many say it is a good idea to use a protective filter particularly on high end lenses like FA ltds and DA ltds, some say use them on all lenses, some say never ever use them. OK, this debate is ongoing and will likely go on forever. But here is where I'm confused, lots of people shoot with CPL and ND filters. Now, I realize that these and other such filters are used to achieve a certain specific compositional objectives whereas the protective filters are not, unless you consider a pristine front element ato be compositional objective and it may well be. So, if the argument goes that using a filter such as the Marumi will negatively impact the lens IQ and cause an inferior rendering, shouldn't the same argument hold true for CPL and ND and other filters? It seems to me that the argument against a protective filter can be distilled down to the idea that no additional glass should be placed in front of the front element because it degrades the IQ of the lens. So how do we reconcile this with the use of "compositional" filters. Do you concede the loss of IQ in order to gain the effect of the filter? Even if you answer yes, you still must address the IQ degradation issue. I read some very passionate pleas in opposition to protective filters of any quality (and I agree, you should get a good filter which does not necessarily mean it must cost 1/2 as much as the lens), but never in opposition to any other kinds of filters. Thoughts?

Thanks for your consistently good advice! I think it would be wise not to be too hasty in selling my FA31. There is always time to sell. Plus I have an MX on the way and I think this will be a great lens for experimenting with film. I agree, I need to carefully weigh the pros and cons and the fact that I will lose money on the sale at this time.

This is an interesting point. I've been trying to understand the pros and cons of using a lens on an APS-C or FF that was designed to be used for shooting 35mm film. What are the advantages and disadvantages and will they be the same on a FF digital body?

Pentax might have an FF in a few years...or not. I might purchase it....or not particularly since it will like be a $5K+ body. I think if Pentax does produce a FF they will also release a series of FF lenses to go with it.

I purchased it because of the hype too. Now that the mystique surrounding the lens has worn off, I just don't really enjoy shooting with it as much as I schedule do the DA Ltds and even the FA77. I think the build quality of the DA Ltds is at least as good as the FAs and the images are excellent.

I wouldn't mind the weight as much if I was so truly impressed with the FA31. I had an FA43 & I was also "meh" about it and I got rid of it. I'll may keep the FA77 which is almost universally praised as opposed to the FA31 which is sometimes praised and sometimes panned. I mean the 18-55 kit is a pretty good lens too and I think it gets more consistently good reviews than the FA31.

I have an FA31 and FA77 for my K-5. I'm contemplating giving them up, well really contemplating giving up the FA31. Am I crazy (don't answer that)? The FA31 is really heavy to the point that it becomes unpleasant to use for long periods of time. The FA77 is much more manageable but of course at 115mm on my K-5 it is not exactly a multipurpose lens, but of the two I think the image quality is better from the FA77. I guess the thing I'm grappling with right now is how much of the FA Limited is really about "phenomenal" images compared to other excellent lenses of more traditional focal lengths and zooms and how much is about a metal body and great marketing? My DA15 on the other had is fantastic, light, and image quality is excellent. Any thoughts on this (without to much of the emotional baggage that tends to accompany discussions of FA Ltd. lenses). Thanks!
