Post storm fisheye view from the GF slab of our under construction cottage in Himachal; the already set sun lighting up and drawing attention to rare Mammatus clouds, which unlike cumulus clouds form in sinking air.
Mammatus clouds most frequently form on the underside of a cumulonimbus, but can develop underneath cirrocumulus, altostratus, altocumulus and stratocumulus.
Minutes earlier I had captured a double rainbow.
Both captures are lifetime firsts!
I like the contrast and saturation rendered by the DA 10-17 fisheye.

Monsoons rains provide a welcome respite from the searing (40-46 deg C) summer heat in North India. Monsoon clouds are always welcome, more so when they look ominous, because they bring just rain, no strong winds.
Met has forecast a weak monsoon this year, but so far the rain has been plentiful. (As always, met will have a good explanation why their forecast has been off the mark for a months now!)
The monsoon system revived after a two week lull yesterday, bringing relief from the oppressive heat and high humidity from the earlier monsoon spell. The clouds came in from the east laden with moisture from the Bay of Bengal.
I clicked the shot below using multiple exposures.
Today evening the clouds came from the west, as the monsoon trough linked up with a Western Disturbance. The shot below was taken with the camera handheld, and isn't the sharpest. My wife alerted me to the drama while looking out of our kitchen window and I rushed to the roof top with my camera to click the magical lighting condition. I was perhaps a few seconds late, but the shot is good enough.

I use the converter with my K-30 for birding and am extremely satisfied. The drop in IQ, if any, is minor.

Focus is generally much sharper when the subject is brightly lit. Try the camera lens combo in bright light. If you achieve sharp focus, you don't have a real problem :-)

I want to tell you all a story. A female Asian Koyal came and sat on the Gulmohar tree next to our house this evening and made a mating call. Kuk, kuk, kuk...
A male Koyal flew in immediately and displayed his plumage to good effect.
The suitor groomed himself continuously as the female Koyal watched, hidden amid thick branches.
Lo behold! Another suitor flew in looking fierce.
The female Koyal wasn't impressed by the second suitor despite his fierce looks. She flew off with first suitor. It could be because the second suitor's left claw was deformed. Or maybe the female preferred good grooming over fierce look?

Having remained immersed in the joy of clicking with my new DA* 300 + HD 1.4x combination for months now, I decided to return to normal life, which includes posts on Penaxforums, by sharing this handheld shot.
Could someone please tell me if the juvenile has a deformed beak? In which case its life span is going to be very limited :( Perhaps the beak is still forming?

Luckily I will have her over for another shoot with a dark colored top! Thanks for the posing tips. This time I will be sure to try B&W also.
One of the challenges that I am facing is on account of low lighting in such photography. How do I get a sharp focus on the full face with the shutter as wide open as required to ensure shutter speed doesn't drop below 1/30 resulting in motion blur from the model's breathing and balancing in a standing posture. I just have FA 50/1.4 and FA 35/2.0 in my lens bag so far.
A bright portrait lens with adequate telephoto would give me more wiggle room, but I am sure I have a lot to learn before yielding to my lust for another lens.

I messed around with the exposure on the top in PP to subdue the distraction. :)

You are right! I wanted rim lighting based exposure but, as I explained in another post, couldn't do it with my lowly FA 50/1.4 dealing with a standing breathing model! Shutter speed would be too low.

I recently setup a spartan home studio - Two white umbrella lights and some backdrops.
The low key portrait below was taken using a battery powered LED light with a white umbrella as modifier, and a black muslin backdrop.
I wonder if the white colored top was a good idea for a low key portrait? Or the pose? Does low key photography work best with darker poses?
I couldn't get a sharper focus with my FA 50 f/1.4. The camera was on a tripod and I used IR remote for shutter release, but the shutter speed was 1/15s, which could well have been the reason for reduced sharpness.
What else is wrong, or perhaps right with the photo?

I have had this issue for months. Others have experienced the problem which has been discussed several times on the forum.
Bad News: This is a K-30 manufacturing / software issue. which you will have to live with!
Good News: You can live with the problem to some extent. Here are some tips on doing so
The metering
Appears to get better with continuous use. If you keep clicking away, the number of "dark" captures start to reduce.
"Dark" captures completely disappears in bright light with continuous use.
The reason why I suspect the problem could be in the software is because people across the world started reporting it around the same time.

Monsoon isn't the best season to visit a bird sanctuary, but we have one that continuously tempts us with its proximity, the Okhla Bird Sanctuary (OBS). Yesterday morning was clear... and the breeding season for many birds ends in September, so there was a good chance of juvenile spotting. We decided to venture out.
It turned out to be our lucky day. Pelicans are rare to sight; the species being near endangered. We hadn't seen a Pelican earlier at OBS and rampant encroachments of sanctuary land by politically backed builders makes a Pelican sighting there highly unlikely. But we spotted a Pelican family of three and observed them for an hour, in between munching on a egg sandwiches that the wife and quickly made before we ventured out.
We had just finished washing down the sandwich with some iced tea, when it happened! The Pelican family took to the air - it was time for the juvenile to get some flight lessons. In this particular case - how to locate and ride a thermal to gain height.
The parents flew ahead and behind, perhaps aerodynamically assisting the juvenile in the center. I am not an expert on birds, so I could be wrong. They flew in wide lazy circles drifting northwards for almost 5 minutes before they caught a thermal and rode it to a good height and then disappeared northwards. All this happened before our eyes! Amazing!
In the photo below the Pelican family is seen with the Lotus Temple, a New Delhi landmark, in the backdrop. It's a long shot with a very modest long lens so please don't thin IQ.
They didn't come closer than around 500m and this is the sharpest shot that I managed with my 55-300
Still gaining height they have climbed well above the Lotus temple in the photo below
They were finally riding a thermal...

I had the problem. At the suggestion of a forum member responding to an earlier post about the issue, I wiped my lens mount and contacts and removed a surprising amount of grime! The problem hasn't recurred.
