IMPORTANT MATTER FOR ARTISTS - ConceptArt.Org News-Brad Holland Interview

Hi everyone,

The email below will be self-explanatory. There is an important issue facing us as artists, related to the copyrights of our works, which corporations wish to control and take at our expense. You could lose ownership of the art you create. We must put a stop to this immediately unless you wish to see others owning and plagiarizing your art.

This is too important to ignore please participate and forward to your others.

Artists' Copyrights in jeopardy? Orphan Works Bill - ConceptArt.org Forums

Congress is rushing these bills through to a floor vote. The House will start marking up their version of the bill at 2:00 today; the Senate will do so tomorrow. To try to stop this bill, we first need to slow down the race to get it passed.

FROM THE ILLUSTRATORS' PARTNERSHIP

Take Action: Don't Let Congress Orphan Our Work

We've set up an online site for visual artists to e-mail their Senators and Representatives with one click.

This site is open to professional artists, photographers and any member of the image-making public.

We've provided sample letters from individuals representing different sectors of the visual arts.

If you're opposed to the Orphan Works act, this site is yours to use.

For international artists and our colleagues overseas, we've provided a special link, with a sample letter and instructions as to whom to write.

Thanks for the input Kim.
I found out that sunshine was not what I wanted for these shots as on the way back the clouds lifted and the sun quickly took the white lace away so it was good I got the shots on the way in.

I got out for a little snowshoe up Gibson Jack trail and though the weather wasn't sunny, the hike was beautiful.

These are some tree shots I took as the trees seemed decorated with the white stuff.

We have had some major signs that spring is on the way. 1000's of Canadian Geese flying over in long V's, Redwing Blackbird males are back and singing in the trees but winter does not give up easily.

The strangest thing I saw today were two different types of insects crawling on the snow, one a tiny wasp looking creature and another even smaller without wings but with two extensions out the rear. It appears they are a bit early and have gotten fooled by the snow.

C&C appreciated.

Press interview with Lt. Fox and Sgt. Raven said they would get the results of the autopsy later.......much later.:)

This shrew was tiny...wouldn't even cover a 50 cent piece and yet they attack and eat field mice.

That was the extent of mammalian wildlife for the day.

Great abstract. Bright, colorful, crisp.
I could see this one as a backdrop on an action oriented powerpoint presentation.

Tough shot when you have backlighted areas and dark foreground.

The best thing you can do is shoot for the subject, i.e. bird, and if the background gets blown it is of less interest than the main point of your shot.

If you needed to tone down the highlights a bit then copy the background layer and set the new layer to multiply, then mask out everything but the highlight areas in the shot and that should bring them down a bit. If more is needed, copy the masked copy layer and make sure it is still on multiply. Pull back the opacity if it is too much.

Also, and I know it isn't always possible, try to fill the frame with your subject. Birds can be difficult, but you could do a vertical crop on this one and cut out most of the bright background on the right anyway, while framing your subject a bit better.

3200 is nothing to sneeze at. The dog shots look great and the others just have slight graininess. Thanks for posting these. Just have to wait....................save my lunch money and lose some weight in the process and maybe by next Christmas the fatman will come down the chimney with a delightful surprise...

Thank you all for your responses.

Paul, the haze in the air made it difficult to show a sharp focus and lent a blueish cast to everything. These clouds weren't very thick so the blue sky above lent them the cooler colors.
I agree it would be nicer to see some shots much larger as I have found the context and presentation changes when a larger shot is given but forum rules and screen sizes dictate.

Salty, am just waiting for the big earthquake then I can begin to sell beachfront property out my back pasture.:lol:

Thank you again.

The excellence of red hair against the backdrop help these photos to pop nicely.
Floats your subjects and would be nice of some striking high key shots/processing.

1, 5 & 6 look really good to me. There is a stark cleanness to winter and the sky is an exceptional backdrop color for the earth tones of vegetation. The old kit lens and your eye did fine.

This stream is attractive year round bringing in all kinds of wildlife. Have wanted to drift it in a canoe in the summer and see if there are any German Brown trout lurking beneath the banks.

Paul,
I believe you are correct about the dark streak of the lava through the shot.
I could 'cut' out the middle and splice back in the mountains. That would be more the shot I was striving to capture. WB is tough in snow, too much and I get blowout but when I shot I did a +1 to +2 on the shots and took them in RAW. Could fiddle with it but then again it may not be worth the trouble on this shot. Thanks.

Scott, thank you for your observations.

I believe it was quoted by a famous architect "God is in the details". I see that a lot in all types of photo shots and sometimes a detail shot of the subject actually conveys more the beauty and sense of place better than the overall shot. Thanks again for your inputs.

Kim,
No matter how much I 'willed' the mountains to be part of the shot, even isolating them in PS and bringing up the contrast, there was so much haze in the cold air from evaporation/condensation that I couldn't get the depth and clarity I really wanted. Thank you for being persistant and bringing that to my attention. For this shot, I agree that a more horizontal crop would probably be better, even to cutting out entirely the snow/lava rock at the back of the shot and just having the 'S' curve of the stream through the snow foreground.

This one attracts me any time of the year but from my drive on Saturday the simplicity of the snow with touches of subtle colors of earth, dried vegetation and rock with occasional splash of blue sky sucked me in and I just had to see if I could capture the essence of the place.
