kaiserz - thanks for the reading recommendation. I'll be sure to check it out.

I actually just read about CIP this morning so I decided to do the aluminum foil trick and short out the data pin on my lens. I think it's an awesome feature but I was disappointed with the results as all pictures were equally blurry. I'm hoping it's just my technique. I was tracking the subject with the camera instead of leaving it stationary, while at the same time manually focusing until the shutter released. Maybe just leaving the camera pre focused and not panning would work better, but unfortunately I don't get a copy of the dragonfly's flight plan so I'm not really sure how that would work. This first uploaded pic pretty much sums up the results I was getting with CIP.

I ended up just pulling the foil off and going back to the manual focus method and got much better results by continuously shooting while focusing through the insect. Second photo shows the occasional focus success I was getting

I wasn't able to get autofocus to lock on it, but it was darting around so fast I had a hard time keeping it in the viewfinder for more than a second. I ended up just switching to manual focus and got lucky.

I figured I'd throw out some pictures I snapped with the new K-30 & 18-135mm WR lens. In case any of you are skeptical of the weather sealing, I spent most of yesterday shooting in a downpour with no problems whatsoever. I feel comfortable enough with it that I plan on taking it on a section hike of the Appalachian trail next week. The photos are on my g+ account, but I'll link to a couple images here to sexify the post.

Seeing as how this is my first DSLR and I have no clue what I'm doing, the pictures are likely not an accurate representation of the camera's abilities. None of the photos have been edited or cropped.

Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 53 mm
ISO Speed: 100

Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200)

Focal Length: 135 mm
ISO Speed: 400

Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture: f/7.1
Focal Length: 115 mm
ISO Speed: 800

Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/640)
Aperture: f/13
Focal Length: 135 mm
ISO Speed: 1600
Playing around with MF: I shot about 100 pictures of this guy before landing one in focus. Understandably, no luck getting AF to pick it up.

So far the K-30 has been a great camera to learn photography on. The thumb wheels make it easy to change settings so I can snap a few shots and understand how aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc. alter the image.

If anyone has any questions about the K-30 or would like me to test certain settings just let me know. Input on the above pictures and suggestions for improvements are required <-- dooo it. Help a newbie.
