HELP! Filters...

Hi all!

I'm hoping you might be able to help me out. I've spent the last 2 days reading up on filters and now my brain is starting to feel like mush.

In about a week I'm going to be venturing out to Iceland (!!) and I was looking to put a filter on my camera to help with long exposure / motion blur when taking pictures of the waterfall (cliche, I know). I've read that the best filter to use would be ND filter.. but now I don't know which one to purchase. Initially I was going to buy either the Hoya or Tiffen Variable ND Filter.. but then I read a couple of threads from this forum.. and believe getting the variable one isn't as useful. So now I'm looking at Tiffen 77mm Digital Neutral Density Filter Kit 77NDK3 B&H Photo This set.

I'll be using the filter on my Pentax 16-50 and Tamron 70-200mm since they are both 77mm... I don't mind spending up to $120ish.. but now I'm confused on what filter is the best to use.

Also, what would be a good [not too expensive] filter for everyday? I keep seeing different things as well, so 100% confused on filters.

Please help! Thank hyou in advance.

K5 Slowing Down or Impatient?

I don't shoot with the lens corrections enabled. As for the card, I tend to shoot with the Lexar 32gb 133x speed or 400x- from my knowledge both are faster than 20-30 Mb/s. Would this be an issue since the firmware has never been updated?

I'm not even sure how to ask this question without sounding dumb, but here goes...

As of recently my K5 has been taking a considerably long time to process the image. In the past it'll take a couple of seconds for the hourglass to process and I'm able to hit the play button to view the camera. Now a days after taking one shot it'll take me at least 10-15 seconds before I'm able to preview the photo, which does not seem like a long time but when shooting in continuous mood, it feels like a lifetime. This wasn't the case before and has only been happening within the last few months. I'm not sure if I'm just being impatient since I'm older now and it seems like it is taking longer or if I should update the firmware. I've never updated and have had this camera for several years now...

My mistake!

The $399.99 does include the kit lens whereas the $499.99 includes both the kit & 50mm-200mm

This was in the text when you scroll down:
Pentax K-500 DSLR camera kit:

Pentax K-500 camera
Pentax AA battery holder (D-BH109)
USB cable (I-USB7)
Hotshoe cover FK
Eyecup FR
Body-mount cover
Software CD-ROM S-SW139
Pentax K-500 DSLR camera kit with zoom kit includes all of the above, plus a Pentax 50–200mm zoom lens.

This is a sign posting at 3am is never a good idea :o

$449.99 for body, kit lens & 50-200mm

2 days left for this sale.

I'm not sure if it's for all cities- they should all be the same for Groupon?
If any case, this was spotted for the Los Angeles Groupon.

16-50 on my K5

I've had the DA 16-50 F2.8 lens for just a little more than a year now and in my opinion has been working completely fine with my K-5 up until two weeks ago. Out of now where, the camera or lens (as I'm not quite sure which) refuses to focus even if I have it set on AF on both the camera and lens. I have to switch the lens to MF as well as the on camera to M as it doesn't work on AF-C or AF-S setting. The shutter won't release unless it manually focused. The strange thing is, when I put the 16-60mm on my K10D to see if it's my K-5 or the lens that is acting funny, it works perfectly. Here's the kicker, tried out my 50mm and my 25-75mm onto the K-5 and those are focusing on the camera.

Is this a SDM problem with my lens? Or is my K5 acting up (which I had for less than a year) If so, any advice on what I should do to get this fix as the 16-50 + K5 was my walk around kit (even with the heavy weight :[)

Much appreciated in advance for all your help! I love this forum.

I'm actually looking into the M100/2.8, but can't seem to find it anywhere! If you happen to find it somewhere, please let me know as I would love to get my hand on one.

Love the pictures MacGirl! And I'm fearful that will be the same thing although I'm slowly saving up money for a lens.. haha Oh the 77 and 50-135 how they both call my name for very different reasons :o

And thanks for the heads up about the M 120, I'll give that a look and see what I think about it. As for pictures and my final decision, I will definitely keep all of ya'll in the loop with my decision. Eep! I'm excited the game is in less than two weeks! AHH!

Thanks for the suggestion Heather! I'll definitely look into a teleconverter. I think, not quite sure, my dad may have one in his box of camera equipment. I want to believe there is one, but I don't want to jinx myself.

Hello World!

Sorry for the late responses. I had Finals the past week and had to pull myself away from the forum in an attempt to study. But I'm free now! Free!!!!

To be honest, I love my current lenses, but I think part of me is aching to try out new lens. And I too love using zoom lenses for events and actions, however I sometitmes find myself reverting back to my 50mm for a faster glass on occassion and I think that's why I was looking at the 77mm. And with tthe Tammy, sometimes I feel like it's not long enough for concert pictures.

I love La Jolla. I go to UCSD but work at Downtown La Jolla in Prospect. The people are really nice there!!

Funny you should suggestion a flash Miguel as I actually was looking into getting a flash before but thought the flash would not be ideal to use for concert photography.

I was going to purchase a lens then get a flash, but I might due the opposite and hold off on the lens because.... has anyone tried renting from Camera Lens Rental? I might just rent 77mm for the Lakers game and the 50-135 for the concerts and see how I like them before making the purchase.

Thank you again for all of your help. I really appreciate it and love this forum to death. Everyone is so helpful.

Would you have some examples of the FA 100 f/2.8 I could see?

Those pictures Mike Cash are fantastic!!

I've never thought about getting a Takumar lens before, so this may sound like a dumb question, but because it's a screwmount lens, would I need to buy anything else for it to work on my K10D?

thanks Dave for the page. That was definitely useful and very informational as well. Very much appreciated!

mtngal. If you had to pick one of the lens to keep, 50-135 or 77mm.. which would you end up picking? I know not a fair question.

Yes I am! I'm currently in San Diego for school, but I'm from LA.

Let me know how it treats ya! I was looking at the 70mm at one point, but I couldn't justify getting it especially with the Tammy. At least with the 77mm... I can sort of justify getting that one.

Now that bwield and Marc mentioned the M-series, I can't help but start looking at those lens. Oh how my head is spinning. All these choices

mtngal, odd question coming here, but would you happen to know how long the 77mm is? (and yay for us small people! *high five* and I'm not sure if they technically allow dSLRs.... but I've gotten away with it for several Clippers game. I think once I was able to sneak my Tammy in... but with the 50mm on the camera of course.)

Marc, love your concert pictures on flickr.. did you use the M100 f2.8 for those?

And thank you everyone for the suggestions and the help so far! It's a lot of needed food for thought. Very very much appreciate =]

Nope doesn't have to be autofocus. I mentioned those two lens because those were the ones I kept reading about as I read through the threads from people with similar situations.

Any type of suggestions is more than welcome.

HELP!!

Now that I have your attention :D I was wondering if ya'll can help a young gal out with a dilemma before I make a erratic purchase... I'm going to be taking pictures for my school's major festival [it's from 12pm-12am] and the Death Cab for Cutie show this upcoming spring. While I do have the 50mm f/1.4 and Tammy 25-75mm f/2.8, I'm having a sudden urge to purchase a new lens.

1. The festival is an all day festival, which means I'll probably be walking around the festival grounds taking pictures of the participants along with the performers on stage
2. I'll have access to the stage [both on and being in front of the barriers] which is always exciting for a short girl like me.

The problem lies... which lens to get now.

I was looking at the 77mm.. but it's only 2mm more than my Tammy [although 2mm does make a difference. somewhat], but the 50-135 is also appealing as well though I heard it is quite large and heavy.

Oh! And to throw another problem in, I want to take my camera with me to the Lakers game in April and sadly, lens can't be more than 3inches long. And because my seats are somewhat close (section114.. row11) the 77mm became even more ideal, BUT I'm not sure if it'll help me out in the long run if I'm going to be taking more concert pictures..

What to do!! 77mm... or 50-135mm.. OR any other suggestions? OR.. should I wait on the lens and just purchase an off-camera flash for all this business? [though it doesn't solve my Lakers issue.. but that I can work on.. haha]

Do I have your head spinning yet?

I appreciate the help!!!

:D
