Poll: Full frame or APS-c, you be the judge.

Your series is excellent proof of the much maligned "equivalence" concept. All cameras of different formats can readily take the same kinds of pictures over a broad range of angle-of-view, depth-of-field, shutter speed, and noise/graininess. It's only at the edges of the parameter space that one format or another becomes easier or more feasible.

If you want the K-1 to "win," then repeat the series at night with a full moon, go ultrawide, go for super-shallow DoF, or print larger than 40" x 60". FF-users have an easier time with wide angle, low light, shallow DoF, and super-high resolution.

If you want the K-3 to "win," then repeat the series on scenes smaller than 36mmx24mm (which add the hassle of extension tubes for macro above 1:1 on FF), twitchy little birds, sports-action, and the like. APS-C-users have an easier time with telephoto, macro, and high FPS.

No single format is universally better unless you restrict your photography to certain niches.

Buying from Japan

Japanese-produced and originating equipment will enter the EU duty free in three years - current duty rate 6.7 %, and after the first year of the EU - Japan Free Trade Agreement 5 % ... and then 0 % after three years. Much photo equipment is currently being produced in China, and Chinese photo equipment is not covered by the EU-Japan Free Trade Agreement.

See page 90:

http://trade.ec.europa.eu/doclib/docs/2018/april/tradoc_156786.pdf

So, according to the Economic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and Japan the tarifs will be lifted from 6.7 % to 0 % in three years.

Not only the companies will enjoy the benefits of the agreement - the consumers too will enjoy the benefits of the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Japan!

Portraiture Need help: How to shoot a foto like this?

Yep, the shot's a composite. Graphic designers rely on it, and it solves a lot of problems.

You can have your flash and assistant inside the frame very close to the subject and remove them afterwards, for instance. Passers-by and photobombers, ugly cars and signage in the background? Remove them, too. :)

Ugly background? Take a photo of your subject at f8, then the background at f1.4 focused to one metre, voila, blur (F-Stoppers call this cinematic portraits or some such)!

K1 setting for landscape and hyperfocal
Posted By SteveinSLC

I wouldn't get too wrapped up in thinking about a preset hyperfocal length. It really probably depends on the composition of the photo and how much you have in your foreground.
When I use the K-1 for more serious landscape work, I'm almost always shooting on a tripod. So I don't really worry too much about exposure length. So I almost always shoot at fairly low ISO, and a mid-range aperture, like F11 or 13(this applies whether I'm using the 15-30 or the 28-105). Sharpness is good at those apertures, there's low distortion, and DoF is good, so I can usually get pretty much everything in fairly good focus. If you want to be extremely accurate, you're probably better off focus stacking anyway.

Indeed!

And remember when people had to buy a Sony Walkman for portable music?

And remember when people had to buy a pager to get instant messages?

And remember when people had to buy wrist watches to know what time it was?

The mobile phone and then the smartphone really killed a lot of devices.

First attempt at smoothing the water

To smooth the water, get the shutter speed down to 1/4 to 1/2 second. You are 1/20th and the water is still not as smooth as you may have wanted. If it is a bright day you need to use ND filters. If you are close to optimum exposure without ND filters, a polarizer will cut a stop of light off.

Sorry to hear abiut your saga, but all the manufacturers produce faulty lenses and cameras - even Canon L Series glass - check out the essays by the owner of Lens Rentals.

It is easier for them to do 5 percent of returns than meticulous QA on 100% of what they make.

We might find this tedious, but that's the modern consumer game ... send 'em back until you get what you paid for.

K-1 Mark II!

The K-P is at 960 EUR without discounts. Smart buyers could recently get it for about 700 EUR. The K-1 was available for some time for about 1500 EUR.

A model "II" has always only received very minor tweaks. So expect a faster SD slot and some firmware tweaks, end of story. These models are just there to justify raising price levels for another time period. And they use purely cosmetical stuff to do this. Anything which does not cost anything really. So start thinking about what they could do without significant material or development costs.

He makes a really good point right at the end. Don't give me hate mail on the basis of some other test site showing otherwise. The 'test site' he is referring to (unnamed) uses the FA77mm on he K-1 (some 20 years old and developed for film). Meanwhile, the other two cameras are tested using 'modern' digital lenses ..... Nothing wrong with the 77mm, but, it is not designed to be corner to corner sharp etc ..... it is a different beast.

Macro Focus on infinity
Posted By Not a Number
Replies: 10

Instruction booklets for macro bellows say to set prime lenses to infinity. This is mainly for the purpose of determining the extension factor.

If you are using a prime macro lens without a bellows or extension tubes setting the focus to infinity means the focus is on objects at "infinity" and not close objects.

When using close-up lenses, stacked or reversed lenses setting the lenses at infinity can reduce or eliminate vignetting if any. It also reduces the stress the additional weights can put on the helical threads of the lenses.

Recently I discovered that K-1 records a 4k video of star trails internally. I thought I knew my camera, but it's been continuously amazing me for 2 years now !
I just want to say thank you to whomever decided to put the code in K-1 for shooting star trails!!
here is the video:

Pentax K-1 and birds of prey in flight

There's so much bad press over the Pentax AF. Seriously, when correctly set up, even the KS-2 with the DFA 150-450mm can give you a good keeper rate. Most people who have problems just haven't set it up properly or they haven't yet mastered the art of centering a high speed BIF accurately and quickly enough. If you can do that and can pan smoothly and accurately then you're in business. But it takes lots and lots of practice. Also the focus hold settings are often left at default when they should be at low or off for BIF. And the choice of focus modes (auto 9 or 11 spot/ expanded area AF, or centre point) has to be evaluated for each site and situation. Now having said that there is a little too much emphasis on the relatively low frame rates of the KS-2 or K1 for BIF photography. Granted it's always nice to have a higher frame rate but the nature photographer who has mastered the element of timing and shoots in short, calculated bursts will be rewarded with pictures like the above. You have to have better timing and anticipation with the lower framerates. That teaches you an important skill which you are not going to have just by spraying and praying. I would say that Canikon systems are faster and more forgiving for wildlife photographers who haven't quite mastered the requisite skills. But they don't neccesarily make you a better photographer. BTW, the K1 is really in its element in the above pictures. Look at that marvelous dynamic range and the shadow detail. That's something I am sure the Canikon bunch will be envious about.

How does stopping down the lens move the focus point forward/backward?

What you're experiencing is called "Focus shift" and is a result of spherical aberration in the lens elements.

Here's a diagram that attempts to explain what happens when your stop down:

Here's some threads where the issue is discussed:

Which ISO uses camera??
Posted By stevebrot
Replies: 43

You have the camera and the flash in hand. The behavior of the two in TAv and other auto exposure modes using auto-ISO should be plain and should take less time to figure out than interacting on this thread. If need be, the manuals for both the camera and the flash are available at:

Operation Manuals Download : Support & Service | RICOH IMAGING

Sorry if this response sounds a little curt, but whether you think it lame or not, the camera cannot appropriately calculate the ISO until it does the pre-flash. A little manual flash work with ISO as the variable will quickly help you figure out why. If you need full control over aperture, shutter speed, and ISO for PTTL flash work on the K-3, the solution is M mode with manual ISO.

BTW...photoptimist is correct and the other guy, not so much. That being said, I fully agree that auto-ISO is not a good thing.

Steve

(...another strong proof that auto-ISO is evil...)

Another mythbuster: how CDAF is not fully reliable or precise

The take-away from this (and it's always been a key factor regardless of focusing system) is that the target we choose is critical for AF accuracy. We have to understand what our chosen focus system requires - be that high contrast, horizontal or vertical details etc. - then choose targets that meet those requirements. Many people simply don't know what to point at when they use AF, and why it did or didn't work properly as a result.

Firstly, I really admire your courage in attempting this. I remember my first steps into lens servicing were fraught with worry, but this looks absolutely terrifying by comparison!!

Secondly, I'm amazed at just how much is squeezed inside the K-5 (and, I suppose, any DSLR). Quite a feat of design and engineering!!

Very well done, and thanks for posting this. Most impressive!! :)

Extension tubes and catch-in-focus

It's an el cheapo generic set of extension tubes, just scrape off the black coating and be done with it. Each time you mount and dismount the tubes from your body, you are going to leave behind minute amounts of adhesive residue on the mount which may cause more problems later. It's not like you are trying to preserve a $200.00+ set of extension tubes in it's original glory.

Slowest shutter speed for Pixel S Res handheld

For pixel shift, I always use my heaviest tripod (a surveyors tripod actually). The travelling tripods or even my fairly hefty Gitzo Studex doesn't quite cut it. I was frankly amazed at what a difference the choice of tripod made in producing sharp architectural images. For landscapes using the Motion Pixel shift, its seems the type of tripod used is less important.
