Like any purchase on ebay, research the seller... A large seller with a solid reputation is less likely to screw you.

I would think primes are better for the formal pics and such and a decent zoom would be better for the more candid, random shots.

I still have a *ist DL and use it frequently when my wife uses the K20. Still a solid camera and the simple interface and settings make it a breeze to use... Still get some great shots from it!
