Astro lens recommendations wanted

I think you'll be struggling on that budget to find something as wide as 10-12mm for apsc at f2.8 or better.
The only option I'm aware of is the new 11-18 f2.8 .... and that's $$$
The full frame brigade often go for the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm... unless there is a 12mm in that range.

New Laptop & software

..... just made a huge difference.
My venerable k3mki and kx's just received a boost into the 22nd century.
I am guilty of not keeping a lot of old RAW files but recent images with my Mki and old DA L 55-300 (which are getting long in the tooth) have taken on a new lease !!
Bring on iso 12800 and bird photos where denoise renders the images far far better.
I'm thinking a new long lens is the next step and I'm leaning towards a DA300 f4. I think I'll get 2 stops more light straight away.
But even Kx files look epic.
New technology certainly has its benefits, but also too would a sensor clean and putting the old 55-300 to pasture. It came as part of my kit with my first kx so it's got to be 15years old ...

Maybe too the new processor and screen have helped. Core i9 and latest MSI creator with full Adobe suite.
Whilst a K3mkiii and 150-450 would be epic ... it's one step at a time.

Updated hardware and software just makes a huge difference on screen.. print probably a little less so.

Kudos to Pentax with the k .. 7, 5 & 3 series. These things are almost indestructible. Kx gets an honourably mention in terms of longevity.

K3mki at 24mp will hang in my bag for quite sometime with a wide angle on it... my DA12-24.

I have a D800 which just works like clockwork at the odd wedding but I can't relate to the Nikon ergonomics and menu/button system.

Embrace the old and the new....

Sharpness Expectation 55-300mm PLM

What you should understand is that the 55-300 PLM is a derivative of the original DA L 55-300 which is essentially a kit lens. The glass in this series of lenses is not high end.
The cost of the PLM is the re design of the motor mostly.
These lenses are ok when the subject is close but for the example you provided is showing the limitations of entry level lenses.
It's fast focusing and provides nice images close up but not in the same league as the DA300, 60-250 or 150-450.
I have the original version attached to my k3mki and can get good images but I have to use patience skill and cunning to get close to my subjects. Once your subject is a minuscule part of your frame, cropping heavily will show limitations of the glass quality and exaggerate things like air quality and heat haze etc

A Bout of GAS, and a Rediscovered Pentax Q7

I think most of us understand... GAS a common ailment.
I went to see my doctor about it but she was confused after asking about my diet .... I said that I was partial to coloured ones, had a hankering for some CCD sensors and had far too much old film stuff in the cupboard

Why the Pentax Film Camera Project might be successful (article - opinion)

The point and shoot market is well and truly alive in film terms.
Dust those old ones off from your drawer because the younger ones of the film set love them. I've had/got 2 younger work colleagues who had recently bought one.
It's akin to the film version of a mobile phone.
As for me, just hurry up !!
I want a NEW SLR

Kx colours

Yes, happily using my white stormtrooper at the moment even with its 18-55 @ f8 still delivers good results. Your quite right, a Da35 or 40 pancake or Da15 would enhance IQ.
I shoot RAW and can easily print large enough for my needs.
For some reason I just get a kick out of the colours...

I have a fascination with certain colours of the Kx Kr era.
I now have a white stormtrooper after initially wanting one way back when they came out but New Zealand was not your multi coloured market....
Now based in Australia and having got the white one, I see old posts about European specific colours like beige and olive green etc.
There was also silver and mint green yet I never see these colours come up on ebay.
Does anyone know of links to sites that have more availability of these?
Black, white and a few horrible pink combo ones but never the ones mentioned above...

Yes, that's a likely scenario for the UK and maybe most of Europe especially Germany..... someone has pointed out a silver one which I can't find when searching ebay. Must be a key word or search issue.

Thanks, I've seen something similar before but not in my recent searches. I'll follow that one up.
Don't like pink or purple and Red is not my favourite. There's a couple of white bodies with orange handgrips. Some of them are horrendous 😕

I switched to FF

I have been through the whole process recently of looking at whether FF was necessary. I looked at several wedding photographers I admire, whom I knew shot with the 5D. I think the FF ability to isolate DOF is great, but not something I can't overcome with fast glass. I have the 50-135 and a Sigma 17-50 both at f2.8, which seems as fast as necessary, but a stray 50mm f1.4 Sigma came my way if I need better. I use the K5IIs and it can focus and shoot at a black hole in a dark universe....darn it's good, but rarely would i need it. There is such a closing up of abilities with sensors now that unless your shooting BIG prints, then there's little to be gained from FF.
What really matters is my abilities, getting a nice composition, sharp image etc. I think as many people who are so keen to go FF from APS-C, such people are keen to go DSLR from compact or smart phone, thinking they'll get better images straight away, but on your average smartphone or tablet or laptop screen or even a 16x20 print you'll be hard pressed to tell much difference, let alone any prospective client or a friend. ( my Nokia 1020 is insanely good for a smartphone!!)
I suspect that FF will become a more standard and much cheaper alternative soon, once Pentax gets in on the act along with the rest, but at the moment it's me who needs to vastly improve and I know the recent crop of Pentax DSLR's are more than adequate with good glass to WOW anyone, even a magazine once the image is right. I have shot two weddings recently in the background for an alternative viewpoint and frankly, the professionals using FF produced several very average results.
What really matters is taking what you've got, getting out there, taking photos and pushing your abilities to improve your craft, but hey, this is a Brand forum full of camera Lover's........and if you've got the money, go ahead, knock yourself out ;)
