These shot were taken on the Gold Coast a while back, unfortunately not taken with a K5 as the keeper rate may have been slightly better.
K7 DA*60-250 f/4 @ 250mm 640/ - 800/sec ISO 100 handheld.
AF-C center point AF, tracking kite surfers towards the camera.
I did manage to get some keepers from the set, but quite a few were OOF.
The lens is great but the SDM is still lacking compared to whats out their.

If I we're still shooting Pentax I would definitely consider the silver K5.
It has a nice retro look to it, similar to my fathers silver MZ-3 & MZ-S

Much appreciated for your prompt replies.
I also feel much better on your opinions in regards to keeping the hood on.
Just when your at such an event and the Pro is using a D700 with 70-200 2.8 without hood, I start second guessing myself.
But do feel better regarding protection with the hood on.
Thanks

Hello
I would like to know your opinion if it's ok to use lens hoods whilst shooting indoors or at night.
A long time ago I was shooting with my K7 and Pentax DA*60-250 (hood off)
As I bent down my camera swung off my shoulder and glanced a wall.
No damage but if it hit the lens front on, there most certainly would have been severe damage.
I've heard UV filters are ok but still don't offer the best protection to cushion the impact.
Yes I know, I should be more careful and I have.
Since then I always have the lens hood on for every shot, day/night/indoors.
I was at school event the other night, some other parents with DSLR and good lenses along with Pro photographer. None of them were using lens hoods accept me.
I felt like a bit of a tool, but I'd hate myself if I followed the crowd and took it off then something happened to my lens.
What do you PPL think, leave it on or off?
Is there any detrimental effect if it's left on?
Cheers

Just doing a quick and dirty check on ebay USA (Completed listings used lenses)
To sell your used canon lenses
24-105 f4 US$800
70-200 f4 US$600 (could even be less depending on condition)
Total US$1400
To purchase a new Pentax gear from Adorama
Pentax K5 US$1565
16-50 f 2.8 US$744
60-250 f4 us$1199
Total US$3508
So to switch to Pentax will set you back approx $2108 out of pocket
Upgrade to the refurbished 7D $1100 out of pocket.
But since you said you really want the 5D MkII you could pick one up from Adorama for $2500.
For a few hundred more the 5DM2 maybe the better option, it also means your not at the mercy of trying to sell your lenses for the best price.
I know the above prices can vary depending where you look but it gives you a rough guideline.

If I was shooting purley landscapes the 5D MkII with a 17mm or 24mm TS lens would be a superb combo thats hard to beat.
All depends on what your main priorities are.
1. Lighter weight with the Pentax
2. More weight with better IQ from the above combo

Thanks for taking the time to do these series of shots.
I have D/L half the (full size)shots including the last one, but I will have to take another look at them on my 24" screen instead of my laptop.
To me it looks like a combination of high ISO - 320/sec shutter - and the impatient Beagle:) that the images still look a little on the soft side.
I'm trying to read the writing on the riders collar, all except the last shot I can make it out.
At F5.6 the DOF should not have been an issue, I blame the dog:D
Thank's again for the tests.

I also started out with the K10 then moved up to the K7 along with some nice DA* lenses.
But I realized that my main interests was shooting my kids at sports.
The K7 with the DA*60-250 f4 was ok, but the 7D with the 70-200 f2.8L IS MkII is superb.
I did reasonable amount of side by side testing with the K7 & 7D before I had to offload the Pentax gear.
The results did give me more appreciation of the Pentax system.
If Pentax had ring USM and a much faster AF module I probably would not have left.
Having just shot 2 school sports carnivals my kids were in I can truly appreciate the faster AF system of the 7D + lens combo.
Although I must add it does miss some shots in sequence from time to time.
I'm no longer a Pentax shooter but I do appreciate the system, and still frequent this forum just to catch up on the goss.

I'd have to agree, the IQ is excellent and focus is spot on every time for single shot candids.

Link to images below.
These are just few test that I compiled together.
It was tough call to sell the Pentax system as over the 3 weeks their were some things on the K7 that I took for granted.
Matrix metering on both I found the 7D on HDR scenes seemed to clip the highlites more than the K7.
Although having said that I have had shots where the 7D meters much better, 50/50.
White balance. In our house we have the Florecent long life globes.
AWB or any presets on the 7D are no good, I always need to use a custom setting which means having to take a picture of a grey card and apply that shot to the custom setting.
The k7 seems to do a much better job at this with presets even AWB, solution....shoot RAW.
The AF tracking test I think was pushing the AF a bit.
50mm @ f/2.8 subject distance between 1.5 to 8 meters
Although I was not completely blown away with the AF results of thy 7D keeper rate.
I did find that all the 7D images that were sharp, were better than the k7.
I guess It's a fine line between getting shots in focus and OOF.
Please keep in mind these test shots were for my evaluation only.
Since a member has requested some images I'm happy to assist.
Please do not turn this into a brand war.
As mentioned before, I could not afford to shoot two systems so one had to go.
I needed the system with the better AF as my kids are growing up and becoming
more involved with sports.
EDIT " I also had a look at 4 sets of AF tracking shots I did with 7D a few days later using AF point expansion.
The results as far as in focus shot were about the same as the single point AF test.
But the OOF shots were no where near as severe"
Cheers
Two sets of AF tracking tests
Both at 3fps AF-C & AI Servo
Av f/2.8
ISO 100
Center Point AF
Shutter Speed between 1/1600 to 1/3200
17-55 vs 55mmSDM test distance to target was 12 meters

Congrats...it's a great camera.
I got the 7D & 17-55mm f/2.8 IS.
Arriving this week hopfully will be the 580 EX II speedlight, 7D grip & battery.
And the new 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM II.
I could not afford to shoot two systems so I had to sell my
K7, 540 flash, DA* 16-50mm, DA* 55mm, DA*60-250mm.
I did have a good time spending my last 3 weeks doing side by side test with the
7D & K7 with their respective 17-55/16-50 lenses.

I'd like to see faster AF lenses (SDM II)
Also:
DA* 10-16mm f2.8
DA* 135-300mm f2.8 add a 2xTC = 270-600mm f5.6 :)

Thank you for your quick reply.
I currently have 3 DA* SDM lenses, I'm contemplating on getting a 4th.
If the SDM does need improving to take advantage of future AF I may consider holding off. Or wait until the K8 or whatever the next flagship model might bring.

I appologise if this seems like a stupid question.
I had read some information that the AF speed using SDM only lenses on a K20 is little or no different to the K7.
I know low light is an improvement, but for normal light AF tracking & aquisition I've heard it's the same.
If this is indeed true, would improving the AF module on the next camera have any improvement for AF tracking and aquisition for SDM.
Or does Pentax need to refine the SDM further to take advantage of future AF cameras?

How do you view the level indicator and metering in the viewfinder when you are in manual mode?
I set the level indicator to be displayed in the view finder, but when I go into manual mode I can't seem to get metering as it appears that both level indicator and metering share the same display.
I've only had chance to play with my toy for a day as I am now away at work for the next 3 weeks.
When I return home I'll have 1 day to play with the setting before we head of on our holidays.
So any advice I take home with me to limit my time trying to find out how this can be done would be appreciated.
Cheers

Thank you very much for taking the time doing comparison tests
I have a K10 but no K20, although I do have a K7 ordered.
From the ISO samples on your blog, to me the K20 seems a bit soft compared to the K7.
Lets hope the final production model improves the ISO a little.

Thank's for your reply.
It's a shame really as N & C don't have such a lens unless you but Sigma.
Might have made some more people look over the Pentax fence with the imminent release of the K7.

I'm interested in purchasing this lens overseas from the USA, probably Adorama.
Are the newer batch of lenses on the shelf have less of an issue with defects?
