Tucker Creek Walking Trail extends through a residential area in Conway. On the day of these shots, I was using the Pentax KP and 55-300 PLM. I was surprised how well the camera and lens performed with in-flight photos.

Nature More banana flowers!

Since y'all liked the previous images so much, here are a couple more. These are from my Nikon (D80) archives, documenting some of the plants in the garden at my former workplace. The first one is Musa ornata, common name "flowering banana", native in India. Big floral display, smallish fruit, grown mainly as an ornamental. There are many color forms, pink, yellow, purple.

Second image is Musella lasiocarpa, common name "Chinese dwarf banana" or "golden lotus banana". Closely related to other bananas, also grown mainly as an ornamental. Growth habit is a little different from typical bananas, this flowering structure appears at the very top of the plant after most of the leaves have dropped off. This plant is slightly more cold-tolerant than common bananas. Native in southern China.

Architecture Buckstaff Blues

Buckstaff Bathhouse in Hot Springs National Park has excellent clean lines and beautiful blues that really showcase just how good the Pentax-DA* 11-18mm really is. The image received minimal corrections in DXO Photo Lab for for geometry and highlights. Shooting time was about an hour before sunset using the indirect light to avoid blowing out the brilliant white highlights. I've been incredibly happy with this lens for landscapes and architecture.

this flower. These little bees are very quick and their wings beat at extremely high speeds. I should have doubled my shutter speed. I no longer attempt to track them; I just focus on a flower and wait (and hope) they fly by and are in focus. It worked this time. :)

2024 Eclipse Contest April 8th 2024 Total Solar Eclipse in Quebec

We were lucky enough here to be in the totality zone in southern Québec, CANADA, and also have good weather to shoot that event... it was crazy !

This is what the total solar eclipse allows us to see, like the corona and its chromosphere in the red prominences along the limb. The corona temperature is around 2 million degrees!
(Full crop 1:1)

(p.s. shutter speed was 1/400s, not sure why that option was not available in the drop-down menu)

The 400 lens also had the Pentax 645 1.4 teleconverter. This image is cropped some. The shutter speed was actually 1/400 but the drop down menu wouldn't let me select that. The lens aperture was set to F8 and the teleconverter subtracted 1 stop of light.
Thanks for looking,

Took this photo last fall for a local Ukrainian group and they decided it was good enough to include as the June shot for their fund-raising calendar. I took it at f10 intentionally as I did NOT want to isolate the model from the surround.

Came in the mail today... (I include a copy of the original that I have processed and cropped to mimic how the graphic artist processed and cropped the original file)

BTW, the .50 cal casings were not my idea at all and were frankly uncomfortable for me but my job was to take photos not judge. In any case they certainly do send a message in the religious/pastoral scene (model is decked out in gear for a Ukrainian saint's holiday). Model was a tough girl as many of the shots were taken with her IN the water which was running about 4C that morning. Air temps in same range.

2024 Eclipse Contest Totality through the clouds

Miller Creek RV Park, just south of Johnson City, Texas - the reported aperture on my K-3 was f/2.8, but that isn't possible. More likely between f/8-f/11. The lens was at 500mm and I was using a Pentax 1.7X autofocus adapter. The field of view was equivalent to a 1275mm lens on a full-frame body.

It was cloudy during the eclipse and I had to wait for cloud breaks to take my shots. Of course the sun was moving behind the clouds so I had to reacquire it with each break in the clouds; a fair amount of wind also. There was no such thing as a leisurely shot. I got two shots right at the end of totality. One was the typical corona shot. This one as the clouds were returning. I personally like the moodiness of the image.

Primarily just the exposure level was enhanced from the RAW using Adobe Camera Raw and the image converted to JPEG with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2024.

My first morning in the Grand Canyon in 2019. As soon as I entered the park, I rushed to secure a campsite at Desert View campground. The next morning, I traveled slowly along Route 64 towards Grand Canyon Village, 25 miles away. I stopped at several viewpoints to admire the morning light show and fell on this scene just around 7h00 AM.

Landscape Eroding shale deposits releasing petrified logs. Petrified Forest Nat'l Park, ARIZONA

South of Interstate-40, you encounter huge eroding shale deposits. These mounds were slowly created underwater by sedimentation of water-borne clays. Pine Trees fell in the water and were submerged quickly due to some sort of cataclysm eons ago, thus creating "petrified logs" (wood turned into stone).
