candgpics - those are some very good questions and ones that I struggled with too. I wanted the K5IIs for it's known performance but I was nervous about the flash results. I shoot a lot of concerts where lighting is very difficult and mixed but I am venturing into portraiture. With portraits and weddings flash will become more important.

So far the K3 has done really well. Coming from a KX and K200D it has taken some getting used to. It does underexpose a bit but that might be a Pentax thing

The first concert that I did with the K3 was The Motels and it was VERY DARK and I was at 12,800 most of the night. The very first photo of the shoot was a backstage interview with singer, Martha Davis. She was only lit with an overhead fluorescent light in a hallway. I shot that at 12,800 and pushed to 16,000 because I was nervous and underexposed by 1 stop.

I postprocess in LR5 only. I thought about some plugins but I haven't gotten any yet.

I've been using the K-3 extensively since release, and I am really enjoying it. The only problem I see is that Im doin more and more videos and it's not a good tool for that.
Hope you like the pics.

CTE is the exact opposite of AWB... It stands for Color Temperature Enhancement, and emphasizes the actual color temp : if you are under Tungsten, it will shift the image toward warmer tones... In shade, it will go colder yet...

Nothing to do or set...

Trigger flash faster than 1/160??

Chuck, if your maximum (non-HSS) flash speed is 1/160, it means you have your camera configured to use 1/3 stop increments. Switch to the more traditional 1/2 stop increments and you'll see a max flash speed of 1/180.

The difference between 1/3 and 1/2 stop steps is at most +/- 1/6 stop. Few exposures are going to be critical enough that you can't deal with that in processing.

Aperture priority

Our eyes are the most sophisticated light meters around...a camera can't even come close.

But the beauty of digital is that we can take a shot, see that it's under/over exposed, then press delete and try try again. We don't have to wait for days like in the film era when you have time to forget what you even did!

Aperture priority

Hey chuck,

I'd say it matters what effect you want. I got some books from the library that helped me understand some of the basics of photography that using a P&S camera never taught me.

I can suggest understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. IMO when in aperture priority you can get 3 "effects" 1. isolation and bokeh(up to f5.6) 2. sharpness(between f5.6-f11) and 3. increased DOF(F11+)

1. Isolation and smooth bokeh. Portraits with that dreamy effect. Isolate a flower or other subject.

2. Sharpness f5.6-F8 Is where most lenses get maximum sharpness. Used when sharpness, color and contrast matter most. vignetting and other issues lessen as well.

3. Increased DOF F11 and above spot sharpness starts to fall off, but total DOF increases which can make the whole composed shot sharper. Used for macro, or landscapes if you also want foreground subjects

It can, but why pay extra for a feature you can't use? The YN-560 II is $60 on Amazon. The YN 560 III, which has a built in RF receiver, is $80.

How to get the best out of FA43

I have had 4 copies of this lens (at various times including the latest copy) and I am writing from experience not believe. I will shoot some test shots hopefully over the coming weekend. "3D pop" is more of personal opinion (the photo is 2D afterall), but "edge to edge sharpness" can be tested and proven.

I do however appreciate the advice given in this thread about how to best use FA43 (e.g., get closer, watch out for harsh lights, tendency to compress highlights, etc).

Sharpest aperture for 77mm??

It's at its best from around F4.5-F8. Btw, that's a nice pic- I wouldn't call the DOF extremely thin. It's nowhere near as bad as it would be at F1.8 or 1.4 ;)

Matrix or Center-weighted?

This is something I probably need to pay more attention to.
I tend to just use spot or center-weighted.

I very rarely use them, but assume the scene modes change the metering method.
Spot for portrait, multi for landscape, etc.

Matrix or Center-weighted?

You might find "Link AE to AF point" setting in Custom Menu options useful if you prefer matrix metering. The rather enigmatic help text says "Auto Exposure value linked to AF point in multi segment metering". I take it to mean that it gives more weight to the Exposure value recorded at the metering segment that corresponds to the AF point that locks focus. I suppose you could rephrase it as AF point weighted metering for clarity.

How to get the best out of FA43

I have managed to get that 'look' on a few shots...and I don't own an FA lens. I think a lot of it has to do with the lighting more than just the lens. I am sure its a fantastic lens (in fact so fantastic I want to buy all the FA's)...

Having a good sharp lens is critical and I have heard it from A LOT of extremely good photographers that if you do one thing with your money, its to invest in good lenses. Everything else as it relates to equipment is secondary.

But even if you have the best body and the best lens attached to the best body... if you feed it bad light or harsh light or don't know how to obtain or interpret those 'technical' factors... then no matter what lens you have the shots won't be as good as they could be.

Understanding the principles of light and lighting will give you more 3D shots than just buying a new lens or having the top of the line wigit.

What's the old saying about computers? Trash in, trash out? Well bad light in, poor image out. What are you feeding your lens is the question I would ask.

Best lens for Car shows

Schmidlapper, sorry I'm a bit new to it all still so my question was a bit vague, i've had my K-r about a year & a half so I'm getting the hang of the different technique, trying to remember them all at the time can be hard but i'll get there.

I currently have the 18-55mm lens that came with the camera & a 50mm & 80-200mm manual lens's

& some shots I'm looking to take will be outside & some inside just depending on the time & the place as I'm trying to get the best shots of my own car in different locations & then when I'm at car show like yesterday where there are car outside in the sun some in the shade then some indoors with different level of lighting so a bit of a mixed bag.

So was wondering if a different lens would help me get some better photos.

I go to a lot of car shows. All of them are outside and usually in the middle of the day. That means strong, harsh sunlight with lots of reflections and shadows. Some shows are very crowded and the cars are very close together so wide angle lenses are an absolute must. I use a DA 15 Limited and a DA 10-17 Fisheye. The 18mm on my kit lens is not really wide enough. The 15 is just wide enough and the flare resistance of that lens is a huge asset. The DA 12-24 or Sigma 10-20, 8-16 would all be good choices also.

Those beautiful magazine cars you see are shot with lots of artificial light, almost studio conditions. You aren't going to get those kind of results walking into a car show.
