I have a 44-2. It doesn't screw in perfectly, its a little off. And infinity focus is a little off the mark. I think its just due to the mount being so old and used (the lens has some history), and the general tolerances of adapters.
Maybe its hard to screw in because the screw is grimy or rusty. You can try measuring the thread pitch to see if the lens is genuinely m42. (T mount is also 42mm, but it has a different pitch, which could explain why it doesnt go in properly) These lenses can have a lot of history, and you probably dont know all the repairs it went through.

It shouldn't be - not as it is labeled 44-M and that M should stand for m42 mount. I'm not seeing any obvious reason for these images, nor anything that looks all that different from my version of this lens from the same factory. You might want to check the threads carefully to make sure there isn't any obvious damage to them, Not sure if the adapter is getting gradually harder to put on of if you are hitting a sudden sticking point, as the latter would indicate some kind of blockage rather than a misfit screw.

Will have to give this some thought, I stripped my M 1.4 last week, but haven't stripped any A lens so far. As you say, if it is fine using the aperture in manual mode, it should have to be something wrong with the contacts . Perhaps somebody who's stripped an A lens might chip in...

Sigma 28-90mm f3.5-5.6 Aspherical MACRO Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database This lens
Well , Ive been buying some old MZ series cameras for the lenses , the last one was a MZ-60 and the camera appears to be functioning just fine ..
But what was not fine , was the lens , it did not even work on the MZ-60 I purchased , did not work on my istDS or my K5 , and it only worked on a MZ-5n half of the time ( if that )
So what do you do with a lousy lens - attach it to a camera and pass it on to the next person ? or just do the right thing and take it out of circulation ..
Why pass on rubbish - junk is junk and Im not overly impressed by people passing them onto some one else ...
Well here are some gratuitous images , of me getting my monies worth , nothing like smacking the stuffing out of something ( try it sometime ) = Mellow man ! :p
Well there you go ..
Some serious lens violence ! ( Why do I feel so much better for it ? )
