I think 540's control layout is much better than metz' menu system. But metz 58 has some additional features like secondary reflector that AF540 doesn't have, and it's more powerful at telephoto position (more "focused power"), has less recharge time. Both AF540 and metz 58 support all wireless PTTL features. Metz 48 cannot act as a controller/master.Actually, that's not true. AF540 is more powerful than Sigma.
P.S. Have you read this guide? I think it should be useful.

I'm still happy with my k10 (gx10) and i really think that one's photographic skills are much more important than a camera/lens he uses, so my answer is - no.

I often use chroma noise reduction (in Raw-converter). Rarely - neat image to reduce luminance noise, but I never apply filter to the whole image (noise is usually not visible on textured surfaces so i clean the effects of NR there using history brush). Sometimes I use film grain simulation plugins to add noise/grain.

Yes, screens in K10d (k20d) and Gx10 (gx20) are 100% identical.

Aperture ring won't work on modern bodies, you'll have to use A-position and control aperture from the camera. 28-80 is not very good range for cropped bodies (too narrow, you'll practically lose wide angle), but it'll work fine.

If you really want to learn, k20d and 16...18-45...50 zoom lens (like pentax 16-45, sigma 18-50, tammy 17-50) will be a very good thing to start with. You'll get excellent viewfinder, tough weathersealed body, tons of manual controls, 2 control dials and lots more.

Installing 1.10 firmware won't help. You can enter debug mode, but there is NO af adjustment there (unlike k10d). There a 3 ways of af adjustment for gx10:
1. If you disassemble the camera, there is 3 screws below af module. You can adjust af by turning them (for a same angle) - see service manual for the exact procedure. I don't recommend this method, because it won't be good for weather sealing.
2. Using of samsung gx10 service software. I have it, but i can't manage to make it working - it just crashes. This software is for windows only.
3. Penta-club.ru adjustment software. It's the best way, but it won't work on mac os.
I think you should simply try to find a pc with windows.

I use tamron 17-50/2.8 and promaster 7500edf flash for indoor photography. If the light is interesting, i use "balancing" technique - shutter speed around 1/15-1/8 sec, f2.8, iso 800-1000 and flash (with bouncer, or bounce it off ceiling), 2-nd curtain sync. Flash freezes motion, long exposure helps to get a good exposure of background. If not - i use bounced flash at sync speed.
