Need Pentax Google Street View advice

Steve, thank you for that response. When you said it's not a fish eye, that got me thinking, which happens once in a while. I thought, yes it is, so I must be confused, and sure enough, I was confused. It's an 8mm aspherical, not 14. Duh! Sorry. Still wonder what others use, especially those who get top quality results. Doesn't seem that many Pentaxians do Google Street View shots.

---------- Post added 11-16-20 at 08:20 PM ----------

My original post said 14mm fisheye, which was wrong. I changed it to 8mm.

---------- Post added 11-16-20 at 08:23 PM ----------

Yes, I have a Insta360 One X, but my client wants strictly DSLR.

Anyone using a Pentax DSLR to do Google Street View tours? I use my K70 with a Rokinon 8mm fisheye, and the Nodal Ninja tripod head. I get a little distortion, so I am wondering what others use, and what quality they get. Suggestions? I'd like to adjust my rig to give the best quality, either a different lens and/or tripod head. I will continue with my K70, but I also have a K1.

Poll: K-1 upgrade circuit board or not?

I have three questions to answer before I decide:

1- What can I get for my K1 now, considering I just bought it and it has only about 200 actuations. Would it be cheaper to sell and buy the mk2 than to upgrade?

2- What will the reviews of the new features be, after a couple months? Are the new features worth the upgrade fee?

3- Even if the new features are weak, will the new electronics allow future upgrades that won't be available to original K1 owners?

Just arrived today. I was a bit surprised by the weight. This thing is heavy. I had a few Pentax items I didn't sell before, and so it was nice to see that they will come in handy after all. I was also pleased to see that my Nikon flash works on the K-1. I purchased the Pentax 28-105 zoom, because all the reviews I read say that it is an excellent lens in spite of the lower price. Can't wait to try it all out tomorrow. Now I just have to sell my Nikon lenses.

Well, I've been Pentax for many years, using my Dad's old film camera. Then graduated to the K10d when digital took off. Worked my way through the K5, and finally the K3. Then I jumped ship, for two reasons. I was interested in the mirrorless promise, and picked up a Samsung NX1 (great camera). It was stolen, and Samsung announced it was getting out of the high end camera business, so I went to Nikon. I started to do more with my photography, and felt limited by Pentax. None of the new gadgets were supported. But I never warmed up to the Nikon (D750), and always missed my Pentax. So, after maybe 5 years away from home, I am back. I sold all my Nikon gear and just ordered a K-1.

I'm 70 years old now, and I think I have finally figured out what is important to me in a camera. The K-1 arrives in 2 days, and I am anxious to try it out. I expect it to live up to the praise it has received. I'll be checking this forum often now.

Which lenses to bring on Peru trip?

Ok, I'll bite. You are right that these primes are quite compact. Unfortunately, I don't have the budget for several new $500 primes, and I don't have the experience to know if I'm wasting my money on cheaper models. I am running out of time to order by mail, so I probably have to do any last minute shopping on Amazon. They have a DA40 XS compact for $183 with great reviews. There is also a less compact DA50 for just under $200, also with great reviews. Didn't see any reasonably priced DA21. What do you think? Should I go for the DA40 or DA 50? As I said earlier, I am bringing a Tamron 90 macro as well.

AF Fine Adjustment - Live View

Well, that explains a lot. Thanks! I have been playing a bit and found some interesting results. When I use spot focus, LV is right on. When I use multiple points, even though I'm focusing on a small flat chart on the wall several feet away, LV is very out of focus. Can't even read the letters. Same with tracking, out of focus. All done with tripod, IR remote trigger.

AF Fine Adjustment - Live View

Does anyone know if there is a different method for AF fine adjustment for live few vs standard view? I have an adjustment chart and in live view this particular lens appears to be excessively front focused, while in standard view it focuses perfectly. Yet when I use the fine adjustment menu, it has absolutely no effect on the live view focus. I can go +10 or -10 and it has no effect. This is on a K-3 body with a Pentax 18-250 lens. I'll check through the manual some more, but just wondering if any of you know what's up.

Thanks,
Will

The thought of swapping primes scares me a bit. I think with all the tourist competition I need to be able to grab a shot quickly when it opens up. I've been doing a lot of reading on Pentax lenses and I just don't see any good alternative that would be a significant improvement over the 18-250. I've considered picking up the Sigma 70-200 2.8 and using it with my Pentax 17-70, but then I have the swapping issue again. Tamron has a new 16-300 that looks interesting, but not available for Pentax. So, while the 18-250 may not be perfect, it looks like the best alternative for my situation.

I have the K-3 body. The only other lens I have is a Pentax 17-70. Recent divorce has made it tough to buy the good lenses, lol. My macro lens is a 90mm Tamron that I really like. My wide angle is also a Tamron 10-24. I am a little worried about the altitude. We aren't doing any of the long hikes, but still... We'll be spending several days in Mexico City, which I understand is 7,300 ft, so that will help acclimate a little before heading up the big hill. I lived in Denver back in the Army, but now when I go it's different, especially at the ski towns. I'm 67 now. Should be interesting, in more ways than one :)

Which lenses to bring on Peru trip?

Thanks for all the input folks. I was originally planning to bring the 300, but then thought it might not be used much and it's heavy to lug around. It looks like the verdict is unanimous - leave it home. So I will. And after seeing the link provided by Just1MoreDave, I decided it will be worth having my 90mm macro with me. So it looks like 3 lenses in the bag - 12-24, 90 macro, and the 18-250. Probably also bring my flash, and that's about it. I'll post some shots in late May.

I planned this trip without knowing much about the area, and so I allocated a few days in Mexico City on the way. Now, after seeing how much there is to see in Peru, I wish I could start over. Oh well, maybe another trip....

Thanks, I do have a wide angle zoom which I will probably bring. And also a 90mm macro. So the question is, do I stop at these three, or do I include the 300 as well?

Headed to Peru (Machu Picchu and other spots) next week and I'm trying to decide if it's worth the effort to drag along my Pentax 300mm lens. I generally use my 18-250 but I'm afraid I might see a critter or something interesting at a distance and might wish I had the 300. Am I fooling myself? Should I travel light and forget the 300, or play it safe and bring it along?

How to carry an extra lens?
Posted By theWags

I have started making a few bucks taking real estate photos. My problem is that I carry an extra lens or two (e.g., a wide angle) and switch for different rooms/views. Same problem in the field, where I use my walk around zoom, but occasionally switch to a macro. I have not found a convenient method for lugging around just an extra lens or two. Any suggestions? Has anyone had any experience with some sort of belt with lens hangers? I see some ads, but they always seem to have two cameras hanging on them, not lenses. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
Will

Just got my new K3, and now I'm thinking of adding another lens. I have the Pentax 17-70, and I have the older discontinued 18-250 Pentax zoom. I'm looking for something a little longer than the 18-250 for wildlife. Should I retire my 18-250 and replace with the new Pentax HD 55-300? Or should I get the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and use it with a 2x converter? Or some other option? I understand that some technical evaluation may necessary, but I am generally more interested in the practical comparisons. Ie, what differences will I actually see in my photos?

As a photographer, I am leaving the hobby stage and entering the semi-pro arena. My budget is up to $1,000.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks!

Thanks Just, Some good points. I know what you mean about learning the lens. I'm still trying to get the tack sharp focus out of the Tamron macro. And I can relate to the atmosphere comment. As I noted above, so far sounds like swapping the 18-250 for a 55-300 makes most sense. See if other POVs surface.

Thanks Nick, I was reading about the 55-300. Kinda leaning toward selling the 18-250 and picking up the 55-300. Glad to see you think that's a good option. Waiting to see what others recommend first.

I just bought a K5. I have a Pentax 18-250 lens that I use most of the time and am happy with the photos. I also recently bought a Pentax 17-70. I've ordered a Tamron 10-24 for real estate work, and I have a Tamron 90mm macro. Those are my lenses. I bought the 17-70 when I bought the K5 body, forgetting that my telephoto already covered the low range. So now I'm wondering if the 17-70 is unnecessary. I would like a more powerful telephoto. Looking for advice.

Should I sell the 17-70 and pick up a 400 or some other telephoto? Or maybe sell the 18-250 and pick up a 100-300? None of the above? Something else? I'm not that savvy on lenses and quality so I'd like to hear from the experts before I make a decision I'll regret later. Selling either the 17-70 or the 18-250 should net me somewhere around $400 and I would like to keep replacements in that neighborhood if possible.

Usually when I see questions like this folks ask what type of photography I do, so I'll tell you that I am all over the map. Most of my shots are scenic, but I also like macro and anything unusual. People, but not many portraits. Kinda hard to define.
