Thank you guys. How do you feel about a Pentax K-50 as a possible camera replacement and using the Tamron 17-50?

New Lens Help

Hello all. Haven't been on here in while but thought I would ask for some advice on new lens options. I currently own the Pentax K7. I use this mainly for photos and have another camera for video. The lens I currently have is a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. I love this lens and overall have been happy with it but wanted to see what people might recommend for an upgrade option as low light situations can be difficult without extra equipment. Here is what I'm looking for:

1. Zoom lens
2. f stop lower than 2.8
3. great bokeh
4. Of course sharp images
5. Decent price

All suggestions are welcome. I know the newer cameras can work better in low light and offer higher ISO's so if a new camera is a better option price wise please let me know.

Thanks so much!

Yes, for the purpose of cinematic filmmaking the 24p choice is the option most people would like for their projects. I prefer this option as well.

The video on the Olympus EM1 looks great. Too bad they don't want to offer the 24 option.

But I noticed it doesn't allow 24p filming, only 30p. Why is this?

Correct. A shoulder rig is workable but sometimes, especially for amateur, you are running and gunning with many restrictions. Nice to be able to work with camera/lens stablilization when shooting in this manner.

Couldn't agree more. It seems each company pick and choose but never follow through with a DSLR that is the whole package. Pentax especially. One will have 24p video but won't include mic jack. Another model had mic jack but no manual video control. This is why I was hoping the K3 would shine on video.

I like the GH2 but what gripes me is their lenses (or lack of). If you create a body that does not have stabilization built in, make all your lenses with OIS! There selection has some great f-stop choices but most lack OIS. Doesn't make much sense to me. The best OIS currently lens only drops to f2.8.

Thank you again for your thoughts on this. Sorry if I seem anal about it but just frustrating when I want to support Pentax and they keep coming up short. I realize Pentax is first and foremost about photography, so video is not their greatest concern. I just think if they would have gone mechanical SR it would have sold me on it.

Someone also mentioned the Sony A77. Does anyone happen to know if Pentax lenses are compatible with this model?

Thank you so much for uploading that. Definitely jello at 24fps. What gets me is it seems to jello in a somewhat stationary position.

You said this doesn't really occur at 50fps?

Correct. Kind of a pain. Which is why I was looking at returning to Pentax and use some manual lenses I have. Easier to adapt and some great results with older primes. I have a 50mm f1.7 that I really like and was hoping K3 would be a great match as far as video. I got excited about the full manual control(finally!)

Thank you. I think what I may do for now is hold on to my GH2.

There is the Leica 45mm f2.8 with OIS that is micro 4/3 . Not as open as the f1.4/1.7 pancake lenses but at least has OIS.

I would be shooting mainly on 1080/24 with a shutter around 1/50. Any chance you could show an example of that? Thanks!

Appreciate the feedback guys.

Reason I was looking at K3:
Manual control of video settings (ISO, aperture, shutter)
Headphone mic
In body stabilization
Use of manual Pentax lens

I would use it for stills along with my K7 but it would also be my video camera.

Again, like the GH2 but using non-ois lenses requires steadicam rig. Not impossible but some situations it's hard to work with.

I have been focusing on suspense horror projects where low light situations are a given. I feel light most of the Panasonic lenses do not perform well in these conditions where additional lighting is not available.
IS is important to me as a lot of handheld work is required.

Perhaps Pentax will come out with a K3 II's?

Thank you for the feedback.

I do like the GH2 but its difficult to find a lens in the f1.4-2.0 range that includes OIS. Without the OIS the video is prettying damn shaky unless you invest in a steadicam gear. Lighting is an issue when using the kit lenses (f3.5) during darker video environments too.

I was looking forward to returning to a Pentax as I have some great manual lenses plus having IS in camera. The K3 has some great features with the manual controls and headphone jack that I found exciting but so far the feedback on video hasn't impressed me.

I tend to do more cinematic work that is handheld so a tripod isn't always the best option in certain conditions.

This is pretty disappointing. I like Pentax and shot video on my K7 with somewhat good results and was looking to come back with the K3(I have a GH2). I hate that the OIS is built in to lenses for the GH2 as its hard to find a decent priced lens with a wide f stop that has OIS. I thought K3 would be the ticket as everything else is enticing to me for video work. :(

Looking at the K-3 but the jello effect concerned me for video. I noticed there is a new firmware update for the camera. Anyone know if this helps the issue? Is the jello effect more noticeable at higher fps or lower? Thanks!

Pentax K7 external mic volume

Hello all. Shooting some video with my K7 and using a hotshoe mounted Rode mic. Stupid question maybe, but how do I adjust the sound on the camera? I see the speaker icon but not sure where to adjust the volume for the mic when recording.

Also, anyone else get background noise from external mic? There seems to be a low white noise on video. Any suggestions on how to work around this I appreciate it.

If anyone has worked with this mic feel free to give me pointers for optimal sound. I know there is Gain settings but not sure of the best setting overall.

Thanks so much!
