Ahh, I see. I did set it to 32, but wasn't aware of the processing time requirement. Does anyone know if this would create significant gaps in star trails or if shooting in continuous mode with a shutter release cable would be preferable?

On attempting to shoot star trails last night, I ran into an issue where the camera would only take 22 exposures before ending the sequence, regardless of the number I set or interval time. I was shooting 300 30 second exposures with a 2 second interval. As suggested by someone on the pentax forum, I also set the interval time inclusive of exposure time. This didn't work, and the camera still shot only 22 exposures. I tried it with long exposure noise reduction off and auto-shutdown turned off. No change.

These were taken on an isolated beach on the north coast of Trinidad.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate it.
I definitely need something a bit longer. I've been looking at the 70-300 from sigma for a while.

These were all taken with a pentax kr and a sigma 70-200. Not the best gear, but I tried.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I am able to fit both into my budget. Along with my fast primes, I should have everything covered.

So far I have mainly shot primes. Including the SMC Pentax-A 50mm F1.7 and the SMC Pentax 35mm F3.5
Even at 3.5 that little 35mm performs admirably in low light.

Thanks for your response. The lens will be going on a k5 II. I also have a Kr as a secondary body with a 35mm prime. I do paid wedding photography, but the weddings here are in some ways, probably more challenging than what you are thinking of . For one thing, they tend to be pretty fast paced and the lighting could be anywhere from dim to outdoors in full sun. Getting close to the subjects isn't really an issue since I have full run of wherever the venue is. (usually at their homes since I do a lot of Indian/hindu weddings)
How do you find the 16-85 performs in dimmer lighting?

I am having some trouble deciding between the Pentax DA 16-85 and the Tamron 17-50 2.8 (non vr)
Since I shoot a lot of weddings, I am somewhat concerned about the low light performance of the pentax lens. I have read good things about the tamron, excluding build quality.
In your opinion, would the extra focal range, wr and better performance of the 16-85 justify the nearly doubled price over the 17-50? Any other suggestions?

Just a follow up on this thread. My ebay bought, non proprietary battery holder arrived today. I took a gamble on this instead of sending it back since I was just at the end of my warranty. I was still worried that this would not fix it and that it was a faulty aperture lever like pentax support said.
Well, my gamble paid off. Not only has the mirror flop problem stopped, but my camera is much more responsive. the autofocus is quicker and more concise than with the Lithium ion battery. This solution is highly recommended despite what pentax says. It looks like the camera was definitely designed for AA batteries.

Thanks for the reply. Recently, the problem graduated to the point where it is happening with all my lenses. I tried the fix with the lever, but it didn't work. The lever only moves down two millimeters or so . Is this correct? I am really running out of options here... my last chance is to try AA batteries.

I have read a lot of threads on this but they all seem to be a bit different. The problem I'm experiencing happens only with one particular lens. The smc-a 50mm 1.7
The camera will work fine for a little while when using this lens, but then the mirror will start flopping sporadically when the shutter button is pressed without actually triggering the shutter. Sometimes the camera will lose all power right afterwards and wont turn back on till I remove and replace the battery. This happens with both a third party and oem battery.
It does not happen with any other lens besides this one. So far I have used the 18-55 kit lens, a 70-200 sigma, a vivitar 28-210 and a smc-a 50mm 2.0
Any suggestions?
